  • How to Fix Lyres - Fixing Loose Tuning Peg or Slipping Strings
    This is a quick, raw video uploaded to give an immediate response to multiple questions I got in the last few days about strings that are slipping and not getting/staying in pitch. This is what has worked for me. Others may have a different options and would love to hear those and be able to share and help the community. NOTE: The goal is is only to fill in the hole a little to make it a bit tighter for tuning pins stay in place. Be very sparing with your glue, you do not want to glue the pin in place, it still needs to be able to turn to tighten and loosen as needed.
    I would love to hear from you if you have tried this fix and how it worked. 😊

    I heard recently that someone had a video showing how to tighten tuning peg holes .. of course it was you! Another wonerfully informative video, thank you. :)

    Thank you so much for posting this. I received a lyre as a Christmas gift from my parents last year (our last Christmas with Dad) and had no end of trouble trying to keep it in tune. I made sawdust from a wooden laundry peg using fine sandpaper and it has done the trick wonderfully. Thank you for helping me get the most out of this precious instrument. 🙂

    Thank you so much. Three of my pegs on my 19 string lyre keep falling drastically out of tune. I’m happy you made such an easy video to show how to fix it

      You're very welcome. Just make sure you don't use too much glue. a very little will do. It's only needed for the saw dust to stick to the sides of the hole and allow the pin better fit and grip. Allowing the glue to dry first before placing the pin is a good idea if you feel there is too much glue.

    Thank you so much for this excellent, well-made video! My brand new lyre harp came with three very loose tuning pegs. I was so upset! But by watching this video, I could fix it. You saved my lyre harp! Thank you❤️❤️❤️!

      You are so welcome. Just make sure that you are very sparing with the glue. The object is only to tighten the hole and let the sawdust have something to get stuck to. You still need to be able to turn the tuning pin. If you want for the glue to completely dry before putting the pins back, you can do this too. :)

      I watched your video as I was doing the repair, so it was a complete success! You covered everything, and the pegs I fixed work great now🌟. Thanks again!

      I would have thought that the glue might have held the peg permanently. There is a white ptfe tape used to seal joints in gas and water pipes that might work. Just wrap tape round the peg and screw back into the hole.

      @@johnmarshall124 Great suggestion. I have not used this before but will try it next time I have an issue. You are right, if too much glue is used it can get the pin stuck which is why I made it clear and added also in the description to be very sparing with the glue. The object is to get the sawdust stick and tighten the hole for the pin to stop moving. Allowing it to dry before putting the pin will also help if too much glue was used. Thank you for the feed back and suggestion. It helps everyone ❤

      @@johnmarshall124 Have tried using thread sealing tape from plumbing supplies. it doesn't work as it acts as a rubber-like seal instead of making the peg hole a tighter fit.
      Wood glue & sawdust is da wae.

    Another possible work-around that some people might consider is to tune each string one note lower than designed . The lighter tension may stop the pin from loosening . Of course you loose the highest note (but gain a lower note) . I find I seldom use the highest note anyway. Just a thought.

    Thank you for this. I have luckily not have the misfortune of loose pegs as of now, but this would be great for future use.

    There are no words to thank you for your kindness and for sharing this method; I had the same issue with my lyre. I tried using chalk and rubbing it on the pegs, as violinists do, but it didn't help.
    Could you please tell me what you think about installing more expensive, bronze strings for the clarsach on the lyre? Would this improve the sound quality, and how can one understand the difference in tensions without making a mistake?
    Thank you very much for the video.

      @learningthelyreharp  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You’re welcome! I can’t comment much about the bronze strings for the clarsach because I don’t have one of those. I imagine it would be an improvement being better quality strings but I’m really not sure.

    When I told my son about glue and sawdust, he had the idea to rosin the pegs with bow rosin. It worked really well.

    I've had mine for about a month and still find that I'm a bit off every time I play. Is it normal to need to tune this often? I know on my guitar it seems to stay in tune fairly well.

    Thank you for this. Can I use plain white glue?

    • @learningthelyreharp
      @learningthelyreharp  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not sure. I have never tried to use plain white glue. The object is to only tighten the hole a little and keep the sawdust in place for the pin to grip better and not to glue the pin tight, so maybe? Sorry not a very helpful response, but there is only one way to find out and that's by trying :)

    Will this work for a hammered dulcimer too?My Dulcimer fell and Bent several pegs. We are replacing but the new ones are very loose.

      You can get larger diameter tuning pegs rather than trying to close a wallowed out hole.. especially if it's a thin string which is under higher tension

  • @azurebreeze9759

    How to prevent the strings of moving around? Will the glue help with it? Is it okay for the future strings replacement?

    • @learningthelyreharp
      @learningthelyreharp  Před rokem

      The glue is not meant to tighten the pegs. It is only meant to bind the sawdust to the peg holes and thus creating a bit more resistance for the peg to slip. If you use too much glue lock the peg then you won't be able to adjust your tuning. Hope this helps.

    Im curious what to do if a peg is broken. I know there's replacements but i don't know how I could even get the old one out. Do I need to buy a new lyre or can I replace it?

    • @learningthelyreharp
      @learningthelyreharp  Před 4 měsíci

      I have not had this issue so have not had to look for how to fix it. If a piece of the peg is still accessible, you might be able to use fliers to twist it around and get it out that way. If you are on Facebook, feel free to join the group and post this question there as well as a photo to show what’s happened to the lyre. You may get better feedback there. ❤️

    Do I 100% need sawdust? I'm not sure where to find any where I am

    • @learningthelyreharp
      @learningthelyreharp  Před 2 lety +1

      I’m not sure how badly your pin is slipping. You can also try to unwind, detach the string and then rotate the pin a couple of turns to set it deeper into the whole then restring and retune. Sometimes the problem is only that the pin is not set deep enough so it’s not staying put. The steps I outlined here are for badly slipping pins

      Apologies, it’s just the way my camera is set up. Hopefully you were still able to follow along the process. This is not the only way to fix loose pegs. If you want other advises you can join the Facebook group and ask the members or look up the guide sections. Have a great day.
