  • The color of your front door sends a message, and if you don't want that message to be "dirty," "boring," or "stuck in the '70s," let's talk about what hues to skip and which to embrace.

We’re getting ready to sell, so as much as I loved my peacock blue door, we needed to neutralize. The house is an orangey-brick, so I definitely didn’t want red, but I also didn’t want black as it would then blend in with the rest of the trim rather than stand out. So, I went with a deep indigo. Almost black, but not quite, it gives a pop of color, without too being too much.

My front door is painted BM Coral Gables. It looks great with my blue house.

My front door is a stoney brown in a medium tone. My house looks white but it's a very light gray with black shutters. I love the brown I picked. I've tried painting it different colors but always go back to the brown. Everywhere I lived I painted the front door red but I'm not feeling the red white and black look.

Have you ever looked at the street view of a house with a black door? It recedes so that in many instances it looks like you have a big gaping dark hole there instead of a door. The only black door that really looks good from street view is one with a high, mirror-gloss finish like number 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's residence in London.
