      I also find the criticism of "people who aren't all here because they need the money" to be interesting, especially in this economy- just because you (to use Stephen as an example) own a moving company doesn't mean it's doing well or is doing well enough to support his family. Some of these businesses could be start ups that could really use the financial backing, or like his older buddy who is retired with 'a ton of hobbies,' as long as none of them are already millionaires they could all probably use it? It is life-changing money even after taxes so like, idk. I think it would be even more messed up if they only choose people who genuinely truly needed it, a-la actual squid games, because it is at that point purely profiting off dangling money on a fishing line they can never truly reach. It would also be really messed up to do this to people who desperately need it because of the injuries/hypothermia/never damage, hospital/doctors visits are crazy in America and most of the constraints seemed to be American or American citizens. The whole thing is just wild to me, I agree with the coverall consensus of the video, the show shouldn't have been made at all, it's unnecessary and laughs in the face of the actual squid games show, the show was pointing the finger at society and saying "there's a problem here, the rich don't see the 'non rich' as people, they're play things to them and something needs to change" the reality show just said "hehe we made the set look identical hehe... dystopia? Where?"

    I had auditioned for this show and was pretty vulnerable about why I wanted to participate in show, most of reasons being financial due to the consequences of my own poor decision making when i was younger. I talked about how I have a family now and want to have them live comfortably when I'm gone because both my kids are special needs. That said, it was kind of infuriating to watch participants who run businesses, have masters degrees, doctors, and even one guy who's husband was a producer get a shot to live more comfortably than they're already living, BUT, i guess the alternative would have been to exploit a bunch of poor people. The only thing they could have done better was to not make the show at all. And to think they're casting for another season of it 🙃

    • @Tronn9672
      @Tronn9672  Před 5 měsíci +53

      That’s kind of the dilemma I faced watching this, there’s no ethical way to enjoy it. Either they exploit the most vulnerable people in society or they help make already financial stable people more rich because they wanted to be on TV. It’s the same for other game shows but you’re able to better ignore it because it’s not so much in the forefront. This being based on a show where it was explicitly about people suffering makes it harder to ignore.

      I agree BUT, based on things I’ve heard, it was genuinely isolating. And it seems like the players are actually put under a lot of stress. The show seems really unethical.
      Also I think the guy who was basically pressured and bullied into selecting a shape was justified in crying. The poor dude clearly had a lot of anxiety.
      But the intense crying over little things, I agree, is sooo annoying. But I think some of it it’s fair, especially if these people actually build relationships to one another, but the show barely shows us building it.

    i was with you until you said that the point of the original squid games was that “everyone is in control of their own destiny in the games”. the show points out at several points that it’s actually rigged. the old man was literally the creator of the games and he kept the main character safe towards the end. also i’d safely argue that murders committed in the dorm room can’t fit into the idea that the games are meant to highlight individual responsibility. the victims of the killings had no say in their own deaths. the original squid games specifically prioritizes selfishness but that shouldn’t be conflated with individuality because the whole point of the show is to highlight how there are rules to the games of capitalism that force people to view others as tools for their own survival. contestants are forced to view people that way because the games are inherently unfair and people have to find ways to increase their odds of winning. to win you have to be selfish and thats not interchangeable with individuality unless you believe that people are “inherently selfish”. people aren’t inherently selfish, their environments are designed to be confirmation bias to the people who already believe that the world is inherently already selfish.

    • @Tronn9672
      @Tronn9672  Před 5 měsíci +23

      I agree with you but I think my interpretation of the whole killing other players thing was that, you could fight back, it wasn’t just something that you had to let happen to you. Like I said the games were still unfair and the whole idea of the games being equalizers was a load of crap. But fundamentally during challenges players had input on how they played their game, they had some autonomy. The reason I hate warships so much is because most of the players had no autonomy in the game, the results of the game didn’t come down to anything they did, which I think fundamentally contradicted the original games. Even in team challenges like tug of war, you won or lost based on your participation. Again the games are still really unfair, but players had input. Warships and all the dorm challenges put players in these passive roles where things were just happening to them. They get voted out because someone else said so, no opportunity to fight back.

    • @amanda-fq7up
      @amanda-fq7up Před 5 měsíci +28

      Also the game masters turned off the lights in the glass challenge because the glass maker was going to save everyone. The game was never supposed to be fair… that’s a lie just like how people say capitalism is fair because “everyone has a chance”. Squid game are supposed to be a reflection of capitalism, not an alternative.

    • @justsomeguywithoutagirl4956
      @justsomeguywithoutagirl4956 Před 5 měsíci +4

      In the original drama series, except the glass bridge game, all games were based on skills and a little bit of luck here or there. Even in the bridge game, there was an opportunity for the players to decide their numbers after being told that the numbers will decide their orders, not exactly something like odd numbers will be eliminated.
      So yeah, this challenge was many times unfair as you can't do anything to change your destiny. Those tests were god horrible but entertaining.
      I personally would have liked more if they have kept all the same challenges there except maybe the last challenge because it was a little too much for reality tv show.
      I think Mr.Beast did it way better. He kept the atmosphere fairly light and made it enjoyable. He is also capable in making it more sinister fs.
      This show made me remember *"Golden Balls"* which are not some pleasant memories.

And heaven forbid, there are also contestants ranging from different ages. Just because you don't like competitive Reality TV, doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. I would have loved to see more strategy games though.. like in marbles they only really showed throwing games & no strategy games even though half the players chose strategy games. I feel like they could have come up with something cooler for the finale though. But I guess since they had to cut out physical games, like tug of war & squid game, bc it would be unfair to certain people, they also cut out mental games bc some people just wouldn't hold up to the more intelligent ones. So that kind of left us with a ton of chance games, a lot of 50/50 shots, & random eliminations

    I agree that the edit and game design were poor but you contradicted yourself quite a bit in this video. You said the players were subjected to “the same atrocities” as the drama series, then you went on to show how they were not. You complained the players were being exploited, but then you said the show doesn’t really work because the players aren’t all there for the money and it’s not a life/death situation so the stakes are very low. It’s also consensual and voluntary; there is no threat of death or anything if you don’t participate so saying these players were exploited is dramatic and implying that this filming experience was as atrocious as the drama series is absurd.
    To compare the horror of the drama series to your shock at the concept of *gasp* co-ed bathrooms is hilarious.
    Also, it sounds like you’ve never heard of reality tv. Wait until you hear about Survivor. (It’s been on for 45 seasons and the accommodations are far worse than this. Oh and people don’t have shelter or meals and they actually get hurt sometimes.)

    They didn't missunderstood the original, they made sure nobody will get injured and that everyone gets the same fair chance instead of people going into tug of war with a group of muscle guys against a group of women and elders.
    So from my understanding you would love to watch a 50+ year woman fight a youngster in a head to head fighting combat to get the millions right?
    The tests replaced the killing in the series. so instead of having people kill each other for money, they made this tests for that. The dice game also showed what type of decisions the people would make. The episodes can't evolve around everyone since it would take several hours per episode and since it is not scripted and don't know how far someone will make it, they kept the the cameras on the people that looked the most interesting and showed more. According to some players there was even more drama between players that wasn't shown at all (some are happy about it...).
    As about the food thing, there was some limited extra so people could indeed go back to the line and get a second portion.
    You are rumbling as if it is the fault of netflix that she was eliminated in the first game and critisize the age of the people and their backgrounds as if every participant had to be homeless people or something.
    As about the lawsuits they will go nowhere since it was already written in their contracts that by signing the contract they agree on going through extreme physical and mentally conditions.
    Also that if they think its too much for them, they are allowed to quit at any time during the show, which they unfortunately didn't because they choose so.
    I think it would be good if you would skip the second season since you don't enjoy this anyway(yes you can already apply for it).

      Choosing to absolve a multibillion dollar company of any responsibility in this is a choice. I don’t mind that tug of war changed, I just think warships is a bad replacement because it makes the players passive. Also the eliminations are a terrible substitute for killing. In the show players could defend themselves, they didn’t just have to let a guy a with a knife kill them, the eliminations don’t give players an opportunity to stay in the game. It boiled down to, if someone didn’t like you they could vote you out and that was it, you just lost. Also players said that Netflix was filming all the time, that most of them did interviews and there were several storylines that weren’t shown. It wasn’t that they kept the camera on interesting people, all out of players got camera time, it’s just what they decided to include that was weird. If they knew one of the guys was gonna be a finalist while editing the show, it’s crazy for them not to show us him at all until the very end. As with the lawsuit, I think the worst thing about capitalism is that it incentivizes people like you to defend corporations over lives. You’d rather blame people, than say maybe a multibillion dollar company could’ve done a little more to keep players safe.

    Since I know that the game lasted 7 hours, and they had to stay still for 30 to 40 minutes, it all makes suddenly much more sense to me.
    For example that so many people throw themselves on the ground every time the doll turned its head around.
    I thought "Why would you do that if you have to stand up and run in just a few seconds?" But now it makes sense. But now that we know they had to freeze for so long, that one woman who ended up in that sitting in the air position, looks even more stupid.
    I mean.... every other person tried to find a position where they could stay for half an hour, but she is the only one who just ran without thinking about that!?
    And the old lady with her hands in her pockets.

    Also tbh I understand replacing the children's squid game with something else, as I didn't really understand the game (though I learn games better by playing them), but they could have spiced up rock paper scissors or did a different game. Like Kakegurui and Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor spiced up Rock Paper Scissors by making it a card game and they both also approached it differently.

    1: This is defiently not the worst reality show that existed, fear factor is just one example that takes it to the more extreme. This genre is quite normalized, so i dont know why you're acting so surprised for the concept of competing for money.
    2: Netflix is the producer and creator of the original show, of course they can do whatever they want with it.
    3: I found the extreme simple nature of the games what actually is the core of squid game, so i dont see it as "lazy", rather sticking to the concept of extreme simplicity.
    4: if people cant tolerate a little cold and risks to gain 4.5 million dollars, then they probably shouldn't compete in the first place.
    5: i think they did great as a first attempt considering the complexities, most likely it will improve if they make more seasons because of feedback, and i find the concept makes a great thrilling show experience.

      I agree with everything you said except not exactly in the simplicity of the games. I would have liked to see more strategic games. Even in marbles they really only showed the throwing games. I didn't mind war ship, especially when they brought in Bee who used incredible strategy.
      Honestly, I think the show would have been better if they brought in more geniuses like her as well as the professional athletes. She, and Mai, the winner, were the only ones who struck me as above average in intelligence, & watching them play the games was super fun. It got boring when the contestants stopped competing against each other. Their strategy became all taking 50/50 chances, which is way less interesting than watching a deserving player win with strategy. The best win of the game was Bee's imo

    I really enjoyed the show. I’m a fan of Big Brother and Survivor too so this was right up my alley. The only part I could barely watch was the cookie vomit 🤢 part with Spencer, it was so hard to watch. But the edits were fun and refreshing. A lot of these people were pretty well off, or in this for the exposure, to get the good vibes and exposure. But since they were not paid, I think it made more sense to choose middle class players.
    But I love your point about the two deaf players. Because the younger one was seen as some sort of a shero and the older guy was vilified. He was trying to retire and to me she was virtue signaling, maybe because I’m 40 so I’m in between their two ages but she seemed very rude to him and I was shocked at how she came off smelling like roses and he was seen as some bad guy. There’s something about being young and female that made her feel somehow entitled. She even kept pointing out girls and gays as the only worthy players. Everything about her game was virtue signaling.

    Besides everything else I've seen people mention, I also think the choice of what games to play is so bad. The point in the original show is that they are all kids games from the players childhood! A lot of the games were not something is was really familiar with and I'm presuming a lot of other westerners are either. Which just takes away a huge part of the emotional weight of the games. But it doesn't really matter as the fact that they made the squid game a reality show/game show is so fucking dystopian.
    The whole game also doesnt really work without actually killing the players (not that they should have killed actual people!) Cause thats such a big part of what makes the games so tense.
    Whoever greenlit, produced, was any sorta part of coming up with this challenge show, are so disconnected with reality its honestly scary
