    MODEL ANSWER:
    Dear Ms. Blaire,
    I am writing with regard to your competition for one year’s free leisure centre membership.
    I would like to mention that I have used your leisure centre on a number of previous occasions, usually at the weekend, and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The leisure centre is clean, well-run, state-of-the-art and has a fantastic atmosphere. The cafeteria is also tremendous with lots of healthy food and drinks.
    One thing that could improve the centre is having longer opening hours at the weekend. I think it would be great if it could be open all day and all night on Saturdays and Sundays.
    In order to make the experience unforgettable I would love to have a swimming lesson with one of your professional instructors. I have never had a swimming lesson before!
    I really hope that my competition entry is successful.
    Yours sincerely,
    Jan Novak.
    Writing Part 2

    your clearest memory and say why you remember it.

    MODEL ANSWER:
    My earliest childhood memories
    Many people have memories from their childhood that they can only remember parts of. Maybe it is because we were so young at the time that the details are hard to recollect.
    However, I have a memory from when I was about three or four years old that I will never forget and I can remember in a lot of detail.
    My grandparents lived near the sea which was far away from where I lived, with my parents, in a big city. One summer we went as a family to stay with my grandparents for one whole week.
    The thing that sticks in my mind about this holiday was that I saw a hovercraft for the very first time.
    A hovercraft was something I had only seen in books before, so to see one in real life was truly amazing. I remember the deafening noise it made as the huge engine started and it lifted the hovercraft off the ground. Not only that but the spray from the water as it started moving out to sea flew back into my face and soaked me from head to toe.
    From that day on I had a desire to travel by hovercraft.

I don´t think I cach your channel before my exam, but I was struggeling to find out somewhere the overview for different types of writtings - mainly article, review, blog post, descriptive and agumentative composition. I´m more person who uses actively english and this exam I need only for getting visa, so I didn´t attend any clases where you would train the writting platforms :)

    • @The-English-Professor
      @The-English-Professor  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Pavlina, part 1 of the written exam is a formal response for an intended public audience. So that means you need to write a formal piece covering some given points in the task. It could be an article for a local newspaper e.g. 'How our town could be improved' - to include suggested solutions to the problems of litter, parking and street lighting. It has a limit of 100 to 150 words. Part 2, which is 150 to 200 words, is a personal letter, a story or a descripitive composition. It could be an email/letter to a friend describing your last holiday but again needs to cover some given points which are described in the task. The emphasis here is on an informal piece of writing but in any case should be highly descriptive.
      I suggest you look at the LanguageCert website and see what has been given as tasks previously.
      I hope this helps, David

    Hello David, I need some advice as for the reading and listening parts as well... In particular, as for the reading part 2, the choice of the correct sentence to fill in the gap is pretty much troublesome to me. As far as the listening exam is concerned, I need to know how to remember a long speech: it's not a question of understanding, it's a matter of memory!! Thank you in advance for your kind reply 😇

    • @The-English-Professor
      @The-English-Professor  Před 2 lety +24

      Hello Tiziana Strina, it is difficult to answer your questions quicky but I will try. First of all when you do the reading part 2 , you need to look at the sentence(s) before the gap and the sentence after and try to choose the sentence which is most logical to fill the gap with regard to context. If you are not sure still, try to say the text with the possible sentences and feel which one is most natural.
      With regard to the listening exam you need to look at the questions first and try to predict what type of answer they could have. Then listen to the recording and focus on hearing something similar to your prediction. E.g. the question could be 'What type of transport does the man decide to use in the end'? So then you predict possible types of transport for the situation e.g. car, bus, train or bicycle. Then listen to the recording and try to find something similar mentioned. But be careful there are often 'red herrings' to distract you from the correct answer ! He might say that he had decided to go by bus but then changed his mind to going by train because it would be faster ! So train is the answer not bus. I hope this helps ! David

      @powerhead Před rokem +1

      @@The-English-Professor Thanks, David. From practice materials, there can be 6 questions and 3 answers for each of them. Do I need to read and memorize these questions and answers and then listen to a recording? Do I have controls on recording (start listening, listen again)? And the recording can be played only twice, right?

    • @The-English-Professor
      @The-English-Professor  Před rokem +3

      Regarding the reading part two you need to think about which sentence logically fits in each gap. What is before the gap ? Is it logically followed by your selected sentence? Does it refer to similar information? Or a similar time? In the listening exam you will see the questions before you hear the speaking. This can help you 'predict' what type of answer it might be. The questions are written in the same order as the information in the listening which gives the answers. You do not need to remember the listening at all. Good luck, David

If you don't understand a word in the reading and written part of the exam all you can do is make an educated guess based on the position of the word and context in which it is used. Thanks! How exactly do you need to count the words written? I am still determining what this exam looks like (LanguageCert International ESOL SELT B1). Word can be counted automatically if it's typing text on the computer. And if it's handwritten, do you need to repetitively count how many you wrote to match desired range?

    • @The-English-Professor
      @The-English-Professor  Před rokem +2

      Yes you are correct in both ways. The computer can count how many words are written but you should always double check it. If you you write by pen and paper, then yes it is best to repeatedly check how many words you have written. At the end of each written line you can write the number of words in pencil so you can keep a 'running total' ! David

      Above these messages is a 'Read more' button. Click on it and it will show you the full answer. With regard to grammar structures, it really depends on the task, but I would try to write at least one second conditional sentence and if possible and appropriate to the task, one third conditional or even mixed conditional sentence. The more ability you can show in writing in different tenses with a wide range of vocabulary, the higher your score will be. Good luck ! David

    Writing Part 1
    Write an email to enter the competition advertised in the notice below. Mention:
    • when you use the centre
    • why you want the membership
    • how to improve our facilities.
    Write between 100 - 150 words.
    As you can see that, the second point "why you want the membership" is required in the answer.
    But In your answer, I observe that only the first and 3rd points are answered.
    Can it be written better?
    Or is it so that the answer is already covering up that point?

      Hi Afawuah Evans, no it is not an absolute fail but it is wrong in that you have not completed the task within the number of words allowed. So it might not fail, depending on how many words over it is, but it might reduce your grade. Obviously if it is 100 words over it will fail but if it is ten words over it is a downgrade because you haven't completed the task in the correct number of words. Hello David, I hope you will see this comment and probably reply.
    Can you mention a few things which make the examiner negatively mark the exam ? I am particularly asking this question in the context of assessment criteria. For example, in my knowledge not addressing all the content points in the task, too much exceeding word count, spelling/grammatical mistakes are some of the factors which may push the results below high pass.
    What should students do and avoid specifically aiming at high pass ?

    • @The-English-Professor
      @The-English-Professor  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Saad Zahoor, apart from the things you have mentioned the lack of varied vocabulary is a big negative. If a student repeatedly uses just 'good' and 'bad' as adjectives that would be a problem. Using incorrect tenses is also a negative factor. All in all, it's the combination of many things that result in a fail, pass or high pass. I hope this helps. David

      @@chengchengqian8306 It all depends on the topic of the essay. At C2 level you should be able to make the correct decision regarding what type of English is required i.e. formal or informal etc.

      Yes you can if it is an "informal" task requirement e.g. an email to a friend. By the way, you have mixed the tenses in your example! It is better to write " I hope you are fine and doing well". David

      @@The-English-Professor Thank you, I was going through practice papers as well and all I could see is just an email and letter writing. And in official website it just said; response to a letter, poster, diary, timetable, leaflet, etc., so I do believe it would be just an email and letter writing.

    Sir, I am from Bangladesh. Kindly could you help me about how can I write a review to English school magazine. How can I start my heading? It's very impotent for me because tomorrow (17.03.23) is my ESOL B2 communicator writing exam. I am very worried. Your reply is very important for me. If you give me any suggestion it would be my pleasure.

    • @The-English-Professor

      Yes I understand your question. A review needs to be of something like a book, a film, a restaurant etc. So your heading can be 'A review of my favourite restaurant'.Then you start the actual review with your own ideas. Maybe - Good Food Restaurant is located in the centre of my city within a stone's throw from the central bus station. ......etc

      @@malikawan2859 Hello Malik Awan, as you say it does have some gramatical mistakes including incorrect tenses and use of articles. It also has some strange phrases like 'superb mandatory', 'pen down', 'artificial serves' ...? I really do not know what you mean by these phrases. My advice is to think about writing in a less 'complicated' style but with the use of lots of adjectives and adverbs. I would expect to see things like; 'In my opinion a faster internet connect will improve the quality of life for everybody because it will help students study more effectively and it will enable businesses to increase profits'......etc.'
      If you corrected the grammar and use of vocabulary I think it would pass but certainly not at a high pass mark for B2.
      Regards, David

    Hey David , with the help from your videos I got 46 marks in speaking component . But I lose writing part with 30 marks .. I needed 33 in this part . I have to retake the exams because of these 3 marks .. During my writing exams I was asked to write a letter to a radio station about a recent conversation on inventions .. I started with respected sir .. I want to know that was it right salutation to start ? Because it is obvious that radio station's building is not going to read the letter . There must be a person to read the letter .. kindly tell me About right salutation while writing to an organisation .. waiting for your reply ... Thank you ...🌸
