I came up with an acronym, “SWIFT CHESS,” to help remember these categories & a 10th category to consider, “Sanity,” which is things to maintain your mental health, keep you and your group’s morale up, and maintain hope for survival. As some have said in the rule of 3’s: “You can survive 3 seconds without hope.”
    SWIFT CHESS
    Shelter
    Water
    Intelligence
    Food
    Transportation
    Communication
    Health
    Energy
    Security
    Sanity
As a bonus, the acronym SWIFT CHESS also suggests what are dual pressures in a survival situation: the need for both strategic, forward-looking, thinking (as when you are playing chess) and likely need to take immediate (SWIFT) action!

You mentioned wheelchairs. I think prepping a heavy duty manual wheelchair could be beneficial. No matter if someone is wheelchair bound or not. It might become a necessity if someone gets injured.

I was in a chair for 4 years. Surgery allows me now to use it sparingly. We kept the chair for the very reason you state -- the time will come when it will be needed by me but more likely by an injured person.

I look at this as how you conduct everyday life. For instance, maintaining your transportation. Not just oil changes and tires, but how do you drive? Do you run your vehicle to the edge, high RPM, hard on the brakes? That kind of stuff is not good maintenance. You are more likely to miss work because of a vehicle not managed. This influences how well prepared you are for disasters.
If you had to sell your house (for those of you in apartments, consider if you had to sell it) Does it look well kept? Do all the lights and outlets work? Is the roof getting worn out? Are the bushes trimmed and lawn mowed? Do you invest in your home? Many are more likely to have to sell their house than have civilization collapse. So take care of the little issues first, then build on that lifestyle. Stockpile investments, as well as prepping supplies and ammo. Be more ready to put your kid through college than to fight off the national guard, because it is much more likely to happen.

@@PatrickKQ4HBD Thanks. It is hard to get this message to people sometime.
How many videos are about Altoids survival kits, and how many are about squaring away your property to minimize damage from a storm or a wildfire. The prepping community is just as attracted to fancy, sexy and the latest as the non prepping community.
Having a vehicle breakdown is a disaster. Having a branch fall on your roof is a disaster. Some of these disasters we can minimize or prevent. If we prevent the little things, that helps us have the time and resources to prepare for the big things that we can't influence.
Yes, I have a stockpile of food, and just got done reloading some ammo. But my home and yard are squared away. My tools are clean, oiled and put away. My wife's supplies and tools are squared away. I haven't missed a day's work due to a vehicle breakdown in 30+ years. And all these little things contribute to my being ready for Tomorrow, Next Month, Next Year. I had a neighbor who wanted to join a prepper group. I offered to rototill a garden in his back yard, but he wasn't interested. That wasn't the type of prepping he was concerned with. I dunno, I thought growing vegetables for food and practice was part of being prepared.

This is good stuff, but I'd like to address some things, in the hope that this info will be helpful.
Food- You mention a lack of fibre because it's hard to store. It's not, actually. Wheat berries, and honey are the only two foodstuffs in existence that can literally, last forever. Honey and wheat were found in pharaohs' tombs, thousands of years old, yet still perfectly edible, and the wheat berries, were germinated, and are now part of the genetic library of wheat we grow today. Strange as this may sound, whole wheat and honey can provide upwards of 90% of your daily nutritional needs.
Water- Whatever system you use, make sure that it is sustainable. Filters that wear out and cannot be refurbished will only sustain until they wear out. Sawyers, some Katadyns, or even home made sand buckets. Stills. Also, a good supply of salt is crucial.
Shelter- Knowledge is really key here. Knowing what you can use around you and how are important.
    Safety and security- BIG topic.
Energy-Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but check out solar separated hydrogen. A Biolite stove is helpful for small items, like batteries for flashlights and walkie talkies.
Communication- Again, crazy as it sounds, old field telephones that use raw wire.
Transportation- Bicycles are some of the most underrated, but useful tools, especially with a small trailer.
Intelligence- The importance of this cannot be overstated. Information security is also of extreme import. Also, books are of extreme import. Protect them.
Just some thoughts on the matter.

The virus has likely mutated in Iran due to the nearly 10% case fatality rate and has already started self-sustained community infections with no epidemiological link to mainland China. In countries such as Iran, South Korea, and Japan. The CDC has declared level 2 & 3 travel alerts to the public who are traveling to those listed countries. This is now a Pandemic...

First get right with god. Second understand you cannot prepare for nor can you save the world.it is not your responsibility to take in the unprepared and under prepared. Three. You will have yourself and your group to contend with what ever the world sends your way.. I wish you all the luck in the world for we all need that.

What is a complex carbohydrate . Give examples please.

    • @DonyaLane
      @DonyaLane Před 4 lety

The actual nutritional truth is that you don't need to consume carbohydrates at all. Period. They are not required as an essential part of a proper human diet. That is why there is no such thing as an essential carbohydrate, whereas, you've all heard of essential fatty acids (healthy fats) and essential amino acids (proteins).
What makes the last two macro nutrients essential? The fact that your own body's metabolism CANNOT manufacture those nutrients for itself; your body MUST consume those nutrients from an exogenous (outside) source. But the reason why carbohydrates aren't required (i.e, essential) is because our body's metabolism can convert excess proteins into glucose (that's a sugar/carbohydrate) and store it in the tissues/cells as a reserve for when you need a quick source of energy (a fight or flight scenario, for example).
Don't believe me? Do your own homework. Listen to Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Sten Ekberg. And if you're wondering why you can't lose weight, no matter how hard you train and exercise, just go a few days without eating any sugar, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or FRUIT (especially fruit!)... just eat pasture raised eggs, wild caught fatty fish and grass fed meats and butter and cheese... Your weight will start falling right off. A couple of months of that, and your A1c will drop to a healthy range, and your diabetes will disappear!
I hate to say this, but in a grid down scenario, the fist people who will perish will be the diabetics and the obese, due to all of their comorbidities and reliance on insulin and drugs. There's a version of this already playing out before our very eyes, during this pandemic. Those who are obese and/or diabetic are not surviving, once they get this virus. Their statistics are very grim.
If you're reading this, PLEASE, lose the weight, reverse the metabolic syndrome that your stuck in, read Dr. Fung's The Obesity Code, and make it your patriotic contribution to get yourself healthy! You can do it! I did it. I dropped 40 pounds and changed my health trajectory. Sop eating sugar and foods that convert to sugar (grains and flour, etc.), stop eating "vegetable" and seed oils (corn, canola, safflower, sunflower, etc.), and eat butter and coconut oil instead, and stop eating flour and wheat derivatives. Whoever you are, I'm rooting for you!

If your wife won't eat it, eat it yourself ... get used to it, learn to accept it.
She'll be the one having a hard time eating it when it comes down to the wire, and at that point "happy wife, happy life" is an expression that's flown so far out the window ... her problem not yours.
