I don't necessarily think that this scene was Shawn being "super secure" though, so much as he just never particularly cared about silly high school labels or popularity or anything like that. Those things weren't important to him, maybe *because* he already had those deeper insecurities stemming from his broken home life. If you're struggling just to not see yourself as "trailer trash" and have real abandonment issues, it's probably not going to matter to you so much if people see you as "cool" or not, you know? Not to say Shawn didn't still subscribe to some of that "I don't hang out with geeks" mentality- obviously even just in this scene alone he did, because he was a 12 year old kid- but at the end of the day given his own personal circumstances he was never going to let any silly labels get in way of his relationship with the one person he knew he could trust most in the world. That trust meant way too much to him.
I think it actually makes sense, everything in his life is messy and gives him emotional problems but the one thing he has always been sure about is Cory "You're Cory, I'm Shawn. Just like it's always been." "You're my best friend. What else do you need to know?"
That’s because Verna hadn’t left yet. Verna and Chet are the reason his character went through a downfall of emotions. It was Cory, Turner, Feeny, Amy and Allan and Topanga all together that kept him afloat. Without them he would’ve been worse off. And even with them being there he still felt insecure similar to Cory except his was to commitment.
It wouldn't surprise me if he was secure in the smaller things in life, but not the bigger ones, and while they're younger they only talk about the small things it looks to the other characters that he is secure, but when they get older and their world grows with them, the bigger things become more noticable. So, if we are looking at it from the perspective of say Cory, who when he was younger only looked at life though a more child sized lense of things like popularity or social confidence, Shawn would look secure, because maybe he was in fact secure in those things. But maybe as the characters got older, and Cory saw a much broader view of life, he realized that Shawn is not emotionally secure after all. He just looked that way when the world looked smaller.
Cory thinks shawn considers him a geek and and not worthy being with shawn. But in the end shawn was the one that didn't felt worthy of being corys friend because of their social differences. Really glad there were episodes like this.
I know, right hahah And I don't consider Cory a geek, I mean, yeah, he's not popular like Shawn and all, and he is a good guy, and Shawn is considered a "bad boy" kind of guy, but Cory really isn't a geek. He's not even a book smart, he hardly studies, though he does tries hard in his junior of high school and caught up with good grades, but he's really wasn't/isn't a book smart, nor a geek. And for Shawn, it's understandable. Both of their points are understandable, because one person does everything to fix, while another push away. Cory is like an angel to Shawn's devil, and sometimes, Shawn can be angel to Cory's devil as well. :)
Shawn sees Corey as someone who is special. Believe it or not a lot of cool guys like having friends that are different from the crowd. Shawn is Corey's friend because he knows he will be there for him through thick and thin.
Shawn is a really good, important friend to Cory. We all need a friend like Shawn in our lives. Plus, this episode captured the essence of adolescent and pre-adolescent insecurity to a T.
I love that Cory and Shawn take turns being the pillar of strength in their friendship. When Cory is insecure, Shawn steps up and makes sure he knows how important he is and visa versa. It's one of the strongest, healthiest friendships I have ever seen on TV.

It's the thing that makes their friendship so remarkable: it's such a genuine give and take :) And with as much drama as Shawn goes through in the later seasons, I feel like it would have been easy for the writers to have fallen back on it always being Cory who lifts Shawn up, but they never allowed that to happen. Sure Shawn needed Cory a lot, but he was also ALWAYS there for Cory when he needed him. And to see that kind of open, vulnerable, and well balanced relationship between two straight teenage boys in the media is SO amazing and necessary! A lot of people seem to focus on Cory and Topanga as the "big memorable relationship of Boy Meets World", but honestly, for me it's Cory and Shawn whose relationship was so noteworthy and way ahead of its time.

My friendship with my closest friend was similar to Cory and Shawn’s. He was simply cool when we were growing up and I was the insecure one worrying too much about my grades. I got even more insecure in my teenage years and was always convinced he was going to ditch me for someone better. Jack (my friend) stood up for me when I was bullied, always made sure I got to my next class when I had nervous breakdowns and always listened to my troubles. Every time I would ask him when he was going to ditch me he would always laugh and say “We are like brothers. And we will be for eternity,” and then hug me. He’s been my ‘brother’ 25 years now. I can’t picture life without him.
Poor Cory didn’t notice that Shawn was disgusted that the people who made it a cool party intentionally excluded Cory. That’s why he didn’t feel about about not being invited to the other party.

The funniest thing about this is that Cory was so worried about being cool when he started high school. And then ironically he was voted the Prom King his senior year and he didn’t give two shits.
Watching even just the clips of this show and watching GMW now is just amazing how far Shawn, Cory and Topanga have really come, I mean, sure, they have grown up, as everyone does, but it is just nice to go back and see how it all began and then see Topanga, Shawn and Cory now in GMW, it really is pretty much a trip down memory lane that meets the present.
I love this scene, it shows labels are stupid, we are whatever we say we are...we are so many things that one word doesn't cut it, we are who we say we are, I Am, our names represent all that there it represents. I tell people about this line and they go mind blown yet so simple, lol.
Consider what other shows would have done. They'd have Shawn teach Cory a few things, and either Cory will catch on to them, the lesser traveled path, or learn they don't work for him, done to death. But they didn't do either, Shawn just declared their friendship more important through his actions and that was that, and personally I like this a lot more.

Times do change, I don't know this person's story but the world is very different then it used to be. 9/11 was the big divider but so are the late 2000s. I believe 2020 is yet another divider. It just gets worse and worse.
I think this scene is poetic and makes sense for the future struggles for Shawn. Cory is the only person that sees Shawn without any stereotype, he genuinely thinks Shawn is cool without bringing into the conversation that he is the “bad boy”. Being label as the “screw up”, the “rotten apple” and the “one with no future” are stuff that may be consider cool by others (teens) for someone with Shawn’s charisma, but deep down, we know Shawn is a sweet and loyal friend, and later we get to know how those same labels or stereotypes created in him insecurities because of his background and circumstances that made him have a different perception of those “cool” labels, plus the thick layer on his situation that comes from the constant repetition of adults doubting him, or being fast to judge him for the wrong or implying that he is not worthy. Being considered cool for the things that Shawn is developing insecurities about is not worthy for him. I’m glad that Cory and Shawn see each other for who they truly are, then, when one is full of insecurities, the other has his back.
