- Dinging your yoyo, it's a polarising topic. My view on this may be controversial, but (to me) they don't matter. Aligned rims don't matter, ano flaw doesn't matter. What matters? Your skill and passion for Yoyoing. Don't let any yoyo snob, yoyo company, or me for that matter, make you feel inferior because you don't have a dead smooth yoyo. Heck, I don't even play with dead smooth yoyos. Any A grade I have is dinged until it's a B grade anyway.

Bit of a controversial take, keen to hear what you guys think. Let me know in the comments ;) Keep throwing guys.
You do want a little vibration but don’t ding it so the yo-yo won’t spin, the yo-yo will fall of the strings , even the scratches on the yo-yo can cut or scratch your finger you when you’re trying to grind tricks.
:( my orange outlier2 threaded itself sad days ahead lol
Yeah.... just got a $179 YYF Graviton. I practice on a rug on hardwood floor. Within 2 days of having it i missed a bind and the yoyo flung laterally and hit the only hard surface in reach... doorknob. SAVAGE ding. I wiped my tears found this video and now I'm hitting triangles and hops like a mad man. It honestly gave it just enough vibe to feel when im loosing power
@@jasonpotts4279 get blue/red threadlocker and fix it man. dylan kowalski has a video on it. type in dylan kowalski loctite axle. the side that it's not fitting in is where you want to use the threadlocker on it. loctite is the brand name. red is permanent, blue is very strong, but you know, if you make a mistake, you can get it out. i used blue on mine and my yoyo is still working to this day. it wasn't an Outlier 2 tho. My Outlier 2 is mint :))) sry had to brag a lil but i feel for you

I dinged a yoyo in my backyard while my dad watched. I was a little upset and my dad said “Why? It has character now!”
Every ding can be a story to tell. Dings shape character.
Your father is a wise man

Yea! each ding has a story, i once hit myself in the teeth with my YYF Horizon, and thats one... interesting... story to tell lol

I really don't care about dinged yoyos as long as the performance is not affected. In my opinion the only real downside of dinging yoyos is if you wanna resell them. I don't resell so I'm good with dings 😁
Yeah I'd agree with that too.
A Red Bull halfway through a 14 mile run !!?!??! How did your heart not explode!!!
Try it, you become so much faster. They give Redbull out in the Ironman.
I think this was the video we needed the most. Thank you so much! I live in Argentina and it is pretty expensive for me to buy a new yoyo, even one that is considered cheap. So this makes me feel relieved. Love your honesty!
Thanks for reaching out Denise, I'm glad you feel that way :)
I agree that dings don’t really effect the play of the yo-yo unless it causes them to vibe tremendously to the point it causes issues with stability, yet on the other hand I like to try to keep my yo-yos pristine for as long as I can but if it dings it dings. If it was a throw that I got for the sole purpose of collecting or if it was something rare or special and not so much to play with then I would be upset if I used it and dinged it. If it’s a throw that I plan on using all the time then it’s almost inevitable to get some sort of marks on the throw.
Yep, my competition yoyos end up vibey anyway. So for that reason I'll just use B grades, saves time.
@@thebrandonvu and money!!!
Purely cosmetic. Love it. Dings, dents, and scratches add character. They also take some pressure off. It was way easier to haul my 10.6 meter long, $45k (USD) RV after i backed into a wall the first time.
Very true. One of my favorite yo-yos for practicing risky tricks is a dinged, Magicyoyo N-11. Regardless of what anyone’s told me about this yoyo, I’ve been able to land intermediate tricks on it pretty consistently. Practice matters more than anything in yoyo, but people will still try blame the equipment, rather than themselves.
I like the n11 and find it a lot of fun. I mean, the n11 still can* spin in the 4-5 minute range so lol what do you really need to learn. but on the n11, i own a lot more expensive yoyos, and still pick up the n11 and n12 a lot. even in 2022.
I really appreciate the quality of your videos. Cuts, transitions, different scenes and places, interesting angles. I’d say it’s somewhat cinematic.
Keep up the good work! With love, from Russia :)
Thanks so much for the indepth comments! Really motivates me, thank you from Sydney :)
I also fly rc helis, big ones that do 100mph upside-down and backwards. First thing we tell new people is don't buy it if you are afraid of crashing it. It's not a question of if but when. If you have a favorite yoyo then sooner or later you will ding it. My honest favorite is an Outlier + and I've had to stone and polish the stainless rims thanks to dinging it. It's still my favorite to throw, but i did just order another for that new feel...
I needed this video for so many times. Thank you Brandon. You're our yoyo God father 💗
Haha thanks for reaching out! I hope this consoles a few of you.
Dings, we've been conditoned to hate em. My heart sinks when I get a ding that causes vib. I HATE IT. But your right!! All that doesn't matter if you have good throws and keep everything in line while doing tricks. GREAT RANT! SPOT ON! WELL SAID !
It’s not really a controversial take, but a lot of those points do matter to people. I personally don’t care about vibe, but I hate dings. I work hard to afford nice things so it’s sucks when they get damaged. I don’t dwell on it and get on with my life which is the important thing when it comes to “dings don’t matter”, I just hate it when people express a bit of disappointment over dinging their yoyo and they’re met with responses of “dings don’t matter”, or “now you can really start playing with it”. The person knows that but they’re just trying to get some sympathy and understanding from the only people who could understand, because the people around them won’t understand.
Yeah I definitely understand where you're coming from. My goal wasn't to belittle anyone who cares about keeping their yoyos pristine, it was to drive the point home that as a yoyo competitor it doesn't matter. I've had my moments where I've groaned about dinging a brand new yoyo too, I just don't want anyone to feel as if they're somehow a lesser yoyo because their yoyo is dinged.
Thank you for this video. Im o.c.d. af. My yoyo purchase Tachyon came with some vibe almost from the rim alignment i believe. I enjoy challenging my compulsiveness so this video made it comfortable/enjoyable to throw that Tachyon now. Ty
Of course we all hate when we ding that yoyo we wanted for so long or saved up so much to get.... It does suck! But Brandon is right it doesn't make that yoyo trash. As long as it isn't vibing so bad it wobbles and stops spinning then there's no reason to stop playing with it. My absolute favorite throw is dinged pretty bad but is still very smooth and still plays like it did the day I opened it. BTW great video Brandon, thanks! Keep them coming!
Thanks for that, dinged my shutter and was n upset until I heard your explanation. We will continue to yoyo!
bro i dinged my titanium yoyo got super upset also but he do be spittin facts tho fr
I dinged by Yomega Maverick like hell and it still runs beautifully. I never lubed it (i should once in a blue moon) and still great response/sleep. As long as the dings is outside and not inside the gap which is very unlikely to happen unless you're unlucky. Still, different grits of sand paper or file can fix (if the ding is toothy or sharp that can wear the strings faster with continuous contact, best sacrifice looks and make it smooth). As long as your bearing is safe and clean, you're honestly good.
Man your video came around at the perfect time. Dinged my edge just tonight at a bbq. Been beating myself up about it but its about time. Been a few years I suppose
Fr I think you’re completely right the only reasons I’ve got new yo yos recently is cause cause one of my favorite yo yos was on sale so go got now instead of later at full price lmao
Ya, now I realize if the yo-yo is ding it doesn’t matter if it is spinning it is great. Thanks for the helpful video Brandon vu 👍
Glad I could get that message across! Yoyoing is way more fun once you get over that ;)
Ya
Wow ! I m been rob from buys new yoyos because it got ding. . 5hanks for the heads up and I m sure a lot of people would be appreciated.
It honestly only comes back down to the type of material thats being hit on the ground. If its 6061 i find that the performance is somewhat affected but if its a 70xx aluminum the performance is usually barely affected
Plus its mainly why i prefer uncoated silver yoyos, any dings too rough then all i have to to is sand it moderately to get rid of toothy dings.
my bday is on 15 june Love your content bro keep up
The perfect yoyo has some vibe. Dead smooth doesn't provide any feesoas to ifnyhe yoyo is slowing down etc. Also, yoyos are meant to be played with, which will involve a ding here and there. As long as it's not super hard wobble vibe, it's all good.
Yup, that summarises my thoughts on it basically.
dinged my titanium yoyo the other day just recently got it and it was a stupid way i got it dinged . Did a flashy bind the pads dint catch the string and then a loud ding sounded all over my house .Had do to come back to this vid fr to remind myself it doesn’t matter and it’s not the end of the world😭😭
Just bought a b-grade Outlier 3!
when people said to me dinged yoyo bring downside to its performance, vibes and shlt- no. that’s skill issue, you need to practice your throw even more. for instance my first yoyo has so many battle scarred and it’s still spinning.
Cairns is nice! I agree :)
I’ve dinged my Yoyo several times!! Never created a problem with performance though!
Haha I've seen the speed and ferocity you play at, I knew that would be your take Katie ;)
@@thebrandonvu Thanks! haha!
@@katiethompson4997 he roasted you and your just going to thank him😐
When u dropped that outlier I felt my heart stops for a sec. But yeah I agree with u. A dead smooth yoyo cant be felt at the end of string. Also u can look at all those dings and remember how u effed up and have a laugh
Yeah, battle scars as younger Brandon would've called them.
I have a yo-yo that’s glued back together. It works fine.
This is a great video. I needed this. 😃
Very useful video
Glad you enjoyed it.
Personally, I don't rlly mind if the yoyo vibes or If there are dings, I just would want it smooth on the string. I also wouldn't really enjoy a really big ding on my yoyo that feels really awkward when catching it.
Fair enough!
Well, some vibe won't impact the play at all. But when I buy a $100+ yoyo I do expect it to be dead smooth. It's totally fine to sell yoyo with some defects, as long as it's marked as b-grade. Selling b-grade yoyo at a A grade price is a different story.
Agreed.
yes but.. my yoyo is vibing like crazy. like insanely crazy
The dude in the back😂😂
I always hate when I ding a pristine yoyo, but I've never had a problem using a dinged yoyo. So as far as playability goes it doesn't matter to me.
every time i look at my yoyo i cant look at it without a dent in it
6:32 hes just flexing in the back :DDD
7:22 this has nothing to do with the video but am I the only one who got super confused for a second when he got into that side of the uber 😅😂

Best video ever!
Thanks man.
Idk, when I buy a yoyo I always check tge smoothness first. So far, i have got only 3 yoyos that were dead smooth, out of the box: unprld Recognition, YYF flame, and YYF Knockout. I dinged my knockout yesterday, now it has some vibe. Nothing serious, but still, it hurts my feelings:(((
I dinged my Yoyo , but barely noticed until it almost hit me in the face when I was playing with it.
I have a crap ton of small dings in my yoyo and I still use it
what is the song in the epic running footage?
And here is what's wrong in the world! Where have all the honest people with good character gone to?!?!?!?!
Hahaha, all those guys were just doing their job, I understand their recommendation from a legal standpoint, but yes, I threw a little bit of a hissy fit.
From my knowledge, purely for competition, a couple dings have never discouraged a person from competing with a yoyo. Recreationally, smooth yoyos are always more fun and satisfying to play with. I always separate my “fun” yoyos and my “competition” yoyos and play with them accordingly.
Yeah, I find vibey yoyos more fun. Dead smooth yoyos give me anxiety haha.
I think dings and scuffs give the yoyo Carecter! Lol spell check

Dinged my brand new smashing Bounce yoyo today🙈
Battle scars.
To a point. Got a dinged afterburner and it vibes so bad it's almost not fun to throw anymore. Of course it's put together like a bi metal and damaged bi metals are a different argument entirely. In my personal experience,, if that outer rim gets off set even in the slightest it throws the whole distribution off. This is why I think bi metals should have that metal ring placed inside the rim of the yoyo to minimalize the risk of the rings becoming dislodged or crooked.
Yeah, there are certain damaged rims that make the yoyo really vibey. If it vibes to the point where it hurts stability, that is a legitimate competitive issue.
If it spins then it's all good
I subscribe to the same ethos.
I just dinged my yoyo 5 times that just arrived today lol
Now i dinged it for the 12th time
Man does not give a f...
So one day I bought my yoyo to school, its an a grade and then one of my teacher saw it and just took it without asking and then realized that it doesn’t come back and then do walk the dog now it’s all viby

Always just sunny here
Beautiful sunny day.
Ding Yoyos are fine. Is that a new name for your next yoyo? Ding!
Haha not that balsy!
@@thebrandonvu you got balls. Remember you made the Tofu.
This doesn't seem controversial to me at all. From the perspective of aesthetics, smoothness and dings are important. From the perspective of competition they aren't. I think people may think that's wrong, but I think that's just because they aren't thinking it through, they just generically don't like dings and vibe, so they associate that in their mind with bad performance.
That being said, dings do reduce grinding performance.
Answer me this: what benefit does Evan gain from having a viby yo-yo? I find that really interesting.
I’ve heard about people liking being able to feel vibe on the string so they can tell how fast it’s spinning through the frequency of the vibe. Pretty interesting!
@@OneEyedJack713 That makes sense! I judge that by the frequency of the sound the bearing makes, but I that being said, I don't have a great intuition about it. I get the feeling that I'm too conservative; always brining the yoyo back to my hand when there is plenty of spin left.
czcams.com/video/5jt0FC4YtCU/video.html&ab_channel=TheBrandonVuTheBrandonVu
That's Evan's vid, he goes in-depth at 1:47. It's essentially what Jackson described. He wants to be able to feel how fast the yoyo is spinning in case it dies or accidentally snags.
@@thebrandonvu Cool! I just realized that aggressively binding when my yo-yo is spinning fast is causing snags.
the only reason dinging yoyos makes me flinch is rhe asthetic, so i like used yoyos that already have their fair share of dings, like my atlas. but i would never want to ding my sweet deviant
I love the video, but i have a question totally unrelated that i need help on. Whenever i dismount from the double or nothing mount to the sub mount, my yoyo binds. I have seen people saying to bring out hands together but that still doesnt seem to work for me. Any kind soul can help?
Is your yoyo unresponsive? What's the gap width on it. Sounds like you might have faulty bearing or your technique is off.
@@thebrandonvu it is unresponsive although the bearing isnt very smooth. The gap width is 4.5mm. Thanks for replying!
Try a thinner string....
@@leroywoodman9403 will try 👍
I dinged my yo-yo on my watch and i’ve dinged my yo-yo while trying to do the walk the dog and my Nana said why does it make that dinging sound and me and my papa said because it’s made out of titanium
My OCD doesn't approve of dings 🤣🤣
Fair enough haha.
Grind bro
imo perfection matters for collectors, but not at all for competitors
I agree, I'd say that's the primary distinction.
No way the camera is faster than a human
I've dinged my Bi-metal YoYo and the problem is it's rim weights are not aligned just like how they're used to be. How to fix that Sir Brandon?
You'd probably need a hydraulic press or a press of some type, along with a frame for the yoyo to press the rims (that way you don't mess up the axle post if they're outer pressed, or so you can actually have something again the rims if they're inner pressed)... It may also be that you bent the axle and need to put a new axle in it. Axles sometimes bend if you bang your yoyo on something.
-Mr. Mazal Top YoYos
For the Outlier 2, when the rims get dislodged, I rest the yoyo on a table and step on it to get the rim back in place. That reduces vibe where it's playable.
Every time I ding a yo-yo I use it for 5A. I still prefer a smooth one for 1A
Fair enough.
We need more POM yoyos. Dings legit doesnt matter on those, if they no longer feel good to the touch just sand them. 4A guys are right.
Haha yes!
that wheel checking such a scam, you just can buy new wheel hub and give it to mechanic to change it

Wtf...really wtf.. !!!?!
2600$ for a freaking tyre set.. I understand your bike is good and all but 2600$?!?!
Bro my full bike costs 1/10th of that price and the brand is also pretty decent (firefox)..
2600$ is unjustifiable just for a set of tyres....
Carbon Wheels man, slippery slope haha.
I don't mind a slight vibe, but if I can clearly see the vibe, then there is an issue. There is a limit.
As for the bike, most bikes rims have that area exposed where the spokes attach to the hub. It is cosmetic...may technically do something for aero, but negligible.
If this part were structural, there are 3 possible scenarios:
1. You somehow survived a pothole with a road bike, a bike designed with close to no suspension, including the tires. This impact drove the spokes into that piece.
2. If it is structural, it doesn't really doesn't seem strong like such a part needs to be. Poor design
3. Your rims flex under very little shock and easily cause the spokes to smash into the part. Poor design again.
They don't look like cheap rims, and I'm sure the manufacturer has been making rims for some time. Depending on how those covers mount, I wonder if installing the rim too tightly cracked them.
I hate dinged yo-yos I only play with my metal yo-yos on carpet or grass I hate to ding my yo-yo
To each their own.
Didn't matter to me. My biggest problem would be a super tight bearing seat. If it dinged, it vibes, you still can play. If bearing stopped/need to be cleaned, but it's forever stucked, you're done. Can't play at all.
Yeah tight bearing seats are annoying too.

Lol, just shop around until you find a shop that says it's ok and say the others are jerks? Makes you sound like the jerk.
Indeed, the confirmation bias was there…until he picked up his bike from the other shop and they admitted that they wouldn’t have dropped 2600$ for it. These dudes were trying to “scam” him out of his money for a whole new set when he never needed one. Imma ride the “those bike shops kinda suck” train.
What Ryan said, I actually held judgement until the original bike store had admitted they would just ride the bike. But as the vlog was edited in retrospect and I already knew the outcome of the day, and ultimately the race, I made it seem like “Brandon from the future” really jumped the gun.
Interesting take tho!
