25 min. film of the 1968 Shell 4000 Trans-Canada Rally. Scott Harvey and Ralph Beckman were the winners in a Plymouth Barracuda Formula S. A Chrysler Canada Ltd. produced film.
Great to see vintage rally footage like this, and even cooler to see some of the first legendary Datsun 510s in competition. In San Diego during the early 80s I drove a 510 in solo auto cross events at Jack Murphy Stadium. Back then I bought a Baja prepped 510 without an engine for $300 thinking I might bring it back to life and race it. On closer inspection the car's chassis and unibody had serious damaged everywhere I looked and it needed more attention than I could give it.
Thanks for this. My father Denis Johnson competed with Tony Fall (they show up at 14:07 and later on in the film). They finished 7th overall and 2nd in class.
I learned how to drive in a 1965 Plymouth Valiant Signet 2dr hardtop with a 273 2/bbl 3spd Automatic. What a fun car that was to drive. I wish I had hunted down a '65 Barracuda over the years (with a 273 4/bbl Manual. It had 235 hp... No slouch, with 55 hp more than the 2/bbl mill at 180 hp)... I would have probably kept that car! I've always liked the 1967, but the '68 was my favorite of the 3 yr run of that body style... 340 would have been my choice. You could've had a 383 in that car (I think that was too heavy though!)... In 1969 you could've gotten up to a 440... Ridiculous!!
Thanks so much for posting this. My Dad's 510 came accross at czcams.com/video/4-uqhn8awm0/video.htmlm16s couldn't have been happier for the class win for the 510.
Brings back a lot of memories. I was the Rally Secretary of the Shell 4000 in 1868 (Nancy Davidge) and remember it well.
Wow Nancy how old are you? Was the rally run with horses? Just 3 years after Abe Lincoln died, imagine that
Dear Nancy, my late father competed in this rally. If you have copies of any documents, etc., our family would love to see them. Thanks, Ian Johnson
The sound of that blue barracuda... dude.

I bet he had some stories to tell. RB
Thanks for uploading this footage! I have a mini that last saw the road during this rally. One day she'll ride again. One day...
