- How to Setup a Giant Gecko Vivarium (Rhacodactylus leachianus)!
In today's Reptiliatus video I'll be showing you guys how to setup a vivarium/terrarium for these incredible pet reptiles from start to finish (terrarium background, terrarium drainage layer, reptile substrate, terrarium plants, decor, etc)! This enclosure is a great addition to my new Reptile Room!
Thank you Levoit for the Air Purifier!

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of our bringing our leachie home and we absolutely love him. Don't know too much about him, though, because we forgot to grab all his info from his breeder when we picked him up, and I messaged multiple times to get it and never heard back. 😔
Wonderful! That's too bad about getting your pets info :(. Sorry
Probably cos they have no idea and got the lizard from another supplier. So if they don't respond they wont get messages from you telling them to hassle other suppliers purely to satisfy your curiosity. Animal could also be wild caught which is bad, can you imagine someone grabbing an animal from the wild and then selling it to you for a couple of hundred bucks. For 1 why don't you just go grab it yourself and for 2 it damages the environment. To sum up don't ask stupid questions and you wont receive stupid responses. I doubt they've bred this lizard for 100's of generations and know everything about it, like it's mother and fathers name and stuff like that.
GasoLINA INK! Uh I think they were meaning the specific type and what type the parents were not the whole family history. You don’t have to be such a dick
I know this is older and I am still catching up. I wish there was more content like this on setting up enclosures for critters that are basic. Everything seems to be bioactive. I also think there needs to be more routine maintenance videos on all kinds of enclosures.
Thank you! I’ll def be doing more of this sort of thing soon!
Love it! I've always loved the Leachies and had planned on getting some after I had started keeping cresties. Unfortunately I don't plan on going that route anymore, I love my tarantulas too much and simply wouldn't have room for them. I'll just have to enjoy updates on yours. Thank you for this. They are beautiful. :)
They look like they’re wearing pajamas
hahaha so true! Thanks for watching!
Hahaha, that's hilarious
This music is so relaxing 😊
Hope the snake plant lives.
Glad you like the music! Thank you! So far so good! :)
I always love their striking resemblance to sock puppets
I have a little baby pine island leachie. This has got me so excited to get started on his adult enclosure 😊
Wonderful!
I have been looking into getting one. They are just such a big investment!
Great video!
I just got my first leachie gecko and I’m so excited 😆
Just got my baby Saturday. GTX Isle E. They didn't have the hatch date for me, but quite young only about 3 inches nose to tip of tail. Thanks for having content out for them.
Really great video ! Thank you man 💪🏼👏🏻
Thanks very much!
Just came across this and i love the set up. love this video
love the video on the set up and the animals/family/pets keep up the good work
thank you very much!
I love leachies!!! Great video reptiliatus!
Me too! Thank you kindly!
Love the vids your knowledge is also great
I love setup videos they are like asmr but for your eyes
Thank you so much! Haha I'm glad that was the case for you!
I've had crested geckos since I was 9, and I had a gargoyle for awhile, but I'm finally getting my first leachie soon! She's over 100g, a GTA x Pine Isle cross, fires up super dark brown with white and pink splotches. Super excited to finally have one of my dream gecko!
Colin Kester congrats! That’s so exciting! Thank you for sharing this and thank you for watching my video!
How much was it and breeder?
@@wowcrazy70 She came from Rose's Rhacs in Georgia but she wasn't produced by her, not sure who produced her. She was $1,700 USD
@@wowcrazy70 I just asked the person I got her from and was told she was produced by PDV (Philippe De Vosjoli) :)
Awesome set-up. Looks great. Can you post an update video in a few months about how the plant held up? Also where did you end up putting the food? Do you use a ledge or just on the ground?
Brandon G 100%! The food goes in dishes I place on the ground ☺️
Do you have a list of where you get these products for good prices? Where do you get your cork backgrounds? Do you prefer exo terra cages over zoo med? Also what kind of heat setup do you use on the leachies?
I would really love to own one someday! I currently already have one of my dream lizards (uromastyx geyri) so maybe I can cross this off the list in the future.
Looks good. They are neat looking. Stay safe.
Thank you very much! You too!
I would love, love, love to own one, but I can't see spending 1K on something that's going to stay hidden in an enclosure 95% of the time!
You can get them around 500€/$ if you go for a Mix. They are still very beautiful but not good for breeding. So if you just want a leachianus for yourself as a pet then go for such an animal.
Mine are very Activ! After they calmed down they now sleep on the Front door or at least visible every day.
@@3palienclub806 You have to account for currency conversion as well as the market value in various countries :). Kason is from the US and they are significantly more costly there.
@@Reptiliatus Well thats a good Point! Still there are many breeders that offer leachianus Geckos ranging from 500-750$ in the US, people Just need to do research If they dont want to spend 1000$+ on a reptile
3PAlienClub I agree!
Im getting one for 750 a baby
Did I see a leak when you poured water into the corner of the substrate? I hope not!
What big, soft-looking Geckos...like the Shar-Pei of the reptile world! Cool!
Thanks for yet another fun video.
Looks like your leachies are pretty calm. My Leachies are both from a F1*f2 cross and are pure Tröger GT.
My male is cage defensive as it can be... He always make me feel like I am alive 🤣🤣
I wish I had one of those goofy sock puppets. It's not on my close range bucket list though because I'm not planning on having too many reptiles in my condo right now.
Hey dude. What this type of set up be good for chahouas or what u add more branches, jungle vine and plants? Although chahouas are not as heavy as leachies, they are still considerably heavier than cresties so I'm debating if cork rounds like the ones in this video should be the key component in chahouas set-ups?
Leachie geckos are one of my dream pets. One day, for sure 😊
Same lol
me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dope... I own a garg and want to do something like this. Ill get a leachie one day lol
Love your videos
What locale are your leachies? Love their patterns
I was lucky and got my Nuu Ana for the steal of $250 at a local expo. Absolutely adore him. He hit 30 grams earlier this week.
Devin S are leachianus usually cheaper at reptile expos?
outcast5 if it is a local expo and not one of the super big ones they usually are. The most expensive one I’ve seen at my local KC one was $500.
Wow, thats a fantastic deal!
sweet, might look into going to an expo in the spring (if i can find one in Ohio and the Covid dies down)
They look so cool. I have a few crested geckos and a gargoyle
Thank you! Nice!
I don't have a leachie yet but I am looking at getting one this year, I'm watching loads of videos though for ideas on the setup and what plants to include as I want to have a bioactive vivarium when I do get one. What would be the best plants for a 90cm tall vivarium?
Sooo cute♥️♥️
Thank you!
THANK YOU... I've seen so many vids recently of such tiny enclosures :(
Where did you get the giant cork hollow in the back corner?
i love every geoko
They are so cool I really want one
Hi where did you get the cork tile from? I’d like to order some
Really cool
Thanks 🦎!
What kind of hydroton balls did you use and where did you get them
I just added a leachie to my collection I think he is a pine island one. I now have a chahoua, leachie, a green eyed forest gecko smithii, tokay, frilled dragon and 2 basilisks. I called my leachie Victor because he looks like a old man haha.
Hello I'm new to this but where would you get the cork board & what type of plants are safe?
Love your videos. It helps a lot =)
My leachianus is 4 months old, and she is quite aggressive, any suggestions on how to deal with aggressive/stressful leachianus?
What have you found?
So expensive indeed! I saw a pair at an expo, it was more expensive than my first car.
Yes actual pairs are quite pricey!
And totally not worth it. Well idk how to say that w.o throwing shade to the animal, but I mean geckos are typically pretty easy to breed. Breeders just put a high price tag on these because they’re the biggest of there species
Thanks for the informative video. I have a Nuu Ami Nuu Ana Brosse mix named Bertha; she’s a joy.
Anthony Ivankovic wonderful!
i got my first leachie in february [his name is pockets!]. he's still tiny, but id love some advice on getting him used to tong feeding and worms in general. so far, he only wants his 'fruit soup' and roaches.
Unfortunately I can’t give much advice on that subject as my guys very rarely eat insects with the exception of hornworms!
Where do you buy the cork tile background?
Can you buy springtails and isopods at large expos like narbc? Also, can you get juvenile or adult leachies at narbcs?
Love our pure moro leachianus. About to upgrade him. For just one is an 18x18x24 enough. I know for a pair you want the 36x18x24.
Very nice! yes I would say that’s enough for just one :)
So would u ever need to replace the drainage layer also what kind of water should u use to mist down there enclosure and what kind of water should u give them to drink
We are getting our first chewie tomorrow
Anything you know about them that are big difference from a lecci?
I breed them. GTA dark morphs: yate and pondimei mostly. As well as one monster pine isle
John Kelle very nice!
Do you sell?
What’s your page ?
so what about the water that collects in the hydroball things? Does it just stay and accumulate there forever?
I have a question, I was considering getting a leachie but a thing I’ve heard about them is that they are verrrrrry loud at night. True or false?
I'm here because I got to handle one at a reptile expo and fell in love with the species. They're gorgeous but I didn't make the purchase so I can do more research and see if the species is right for me (I'm used to bearded dragons)
Hola exelente video.
Saludos de New jersey
A que edad una hembra leachianus esta lista para aparearse con un macho??
That waterdish is more like a swimmingpool😂
Nice build. I breed crested geckos and always wanted to get more new Caledonian geckos so I ended up getting a leachie "it's a GT cross" can't remember off the top of my head and a PI chewie in a trade for a lot of isopods which I also breed. I have a few questions. What locations are those? How long did it take to get them to pair up and did they take to each other or have you had 2 that wouldn't mate?
I have a male and female Yate leachies. Will be adding two more within the year.
What would you estimate the cost of this enclosure set up? I love it! I've always wanted a Leachie and i think now may be the time
What size is the enclosure? I have a spare 18 x 18 x 24 and I am trying to figure out what I want to use it for
An 18×18×24 enclosure is considered minimum safe size for a single adult, but bigger is always better if you can! If not a leachie, a smaller gecko like a gargoyle or a crested could also enjoy such a setup.
I was just wondering what size enclosure are they in?
I’m into breeding my tangerine leopard geckos but I do want a leachie as pet!for now I have experience with my crested gecko! I really like the size of them, wondering the best size for one, wether bin or exoterra?
Beautiful! Do you house them together permanently?
Yes :). They’ve been paired/bonded together for over 5 years.
That's an awesome set up you made. I would love to get a lechie one day. But probably won't happen til I move out of my 1 bedroom apartment.
Thank you very much! Patience pay's off! I hope you can get one someday!
@@Reptiliatus If I ever do, you'll be the first to know.
Ayyyye I gotta baby leachie yesterday and im now officially a leachie owner😁
Where did you get it?
@@ElijahWears45 some random breeder expo in minneapolis, it was in my hometown around my birthday so I went and they had tones of leachies
@@ElijahWears45 sorry I randomly came back to the video and saw your reply
I don't have leachies, but I am nonetheless interested in information about them because I think they are cute and fascinating animals. I love their feet, their shape and their bizarre eyes. The faces of your two cuties seem to smile a little. That is perhaps because they are happy about their great new enclosure :D
They are incredible animals! I really enjoy mine! Yes it's so true! They really have little smiles! Haha I hope so! Thank you for watching! I will try to do a care video at some point!
How often and how would you clean? just periodically scooping and scraping poop?
I think there super awesome and would love one, just don't have the space YET! I will have one!!
They are! Hopefully you can some day!
If I have a colder house what do you recommend I use as a heat source?
What size enclosure did you use?
What size is this enclosure and what's a recommendation size for just one lechie
I have four babie leachies:
Jubba, Bubba, Yogi and Yoda they are so wrinkly and cute 😊
What size of terrarium you use ? Good video 🤩
Love the videos! Curious why the gloves, are they sensitive to our oils like frogs?
My wifi connection was screwed the past 4 days so im viewing this late, but its sooo worth it! Can I ask, what are the dimensions of the tank?
Thanks for watching! Tank dimensions are listed near the end of the video :)
And if I use fake plants but have spring tales will there be a lot of cleanup
Me and my wife have leachie a nu moro x Ami I believe and we love her we are hopping to get another game be at some point but like you have mentioned they are still pricey .
Awesome! Maybe some day!
Leachiuana can in fact be fully bioactive. You just have to clean most of the waste and as you said don't use isopodes
Just 2 questions. What is the size of the enclosure? Because i might wanna get one in the future and am thinking of getting an 24x18x36 but i don’t know if it’ll be big enough because they are the biggest gecko in the world and are they handleable?
hopefully getting one in about a month! 😊
Awesome!
hi! what cheap plant light do you recommend? I am currently working on my very first natural vivarium for one of my cresties!
Levi Thornton one of my favourites! amzn.to/3b9rGv4
@@Reptiliatus thank you!
Can you link the Amazon links for the substrates plz
i’d LOVE a leachie but i’m not sure where to buy in the west midlands and they can get pricey i believe
Have you been to expos?
Go on pre loved
Leachies get from 650$- like over 2000 dollars
I was actually going to pick one up at the Toronto expo next month, but it's now canceled/postponed understandably. Also I dont know why but I'm fine( but still dont like to)with ordering scorpions and tarantulas online but not reptiles for some reason. So I will most likely wait until the crbe.
honestly, it's totally safe to do! Especially now that the weather is getting warmer! No longer the risk of cold and such :). Waiting is fine too! Perhaps best with the whole Corona situation.
I am thinking of getting a crested gecko but not so sure about the whole live plant thing. How do you maintain your terrariums? What age do they have to be to go into a 18x18x24? And do they like to sleep in a cave or on a log?
They like hiding away, so a cave or just a very crowded terrarium in general will probably make them most comfy
i'm planning on getting a Leachie with my stimulus (if the give us an increase here in the US that is). trouble is i am finding is locating a breeder in my state (Ohio) i don't like sending animals through the mail. the animal is costly but so will the enclosure (been pricing an 18x18x24)
i plan on doing a bioactive so thanks for this vid. you gave some good tips on things.
I know I’m 7 months late but I’m going to get my leachie from the Hilliard Reptile expo, there is an older lady near the front entrance that has them for sale anywhere from $300 and up. Hopefully this helps 7 months late 😂
@@coopacarp8099 is that the Expo they have every month? (i think its called the All Ohio Reptile Expo)
@@veeot_dragon300 Yep, it happens one Saturday of every month, I’m going to the one this Saturday to scout out the leachies and then get one next month.
@@coopacarp8099 i might have to wait till next month i don't know if i will be getting disability as of yet. thanks for the info though (if you see anyone who has any pine island crossbreeds let me know as that is what i want)
do you keep the male and female in there permanently or only during breeding?
Is the cork in the back for looks or does it serve a purpose? Thanks!
It's not necessary, but it probably provides extra foliage (makes reptile feel more covered -> safer from predators)
Nice
Thank you!
Where did you get your giant geckos from?
For your drainage layer, are those balls the same thing as “LECA” in the plant world? If so, I’m going to look up the cheaper option.
It is large Leca. Look up "expanded clay" for other varieties.
Is there a species of isopod you’d recommend as a clean up crew? I was thinking of getting some Porcellio Scaber color morphs but I’ve come across some horror stories of them being protein “aggressive” and swarming geckos (one video even mentioned leachies, but not if they were a juvenile/hatchling/adult) so I’ve been looking for a humid tolerant species of isopod.
Honestly I would use dwarf whites :).
@@Reptiliatus Thanks! I also wanted to put some pothos and a nerve plant in my enclosure, but on the BioDude website the description for pothos states that it contains “…low levels of oxalic acid and sharp calcium oxalate crystals known as raphides. Ingestion is not recommended and may cause oral irritation” should I avoid having this in my leachie enclosure?
@@supercuttlefish6199 did u end up using pothos?
I just recently purchased a female juvenile 100% Nuu Ana and a Male 75% Nuu Ami and 25% Nuu Ana . Letting them get settled in and then so anxious to start interacting with them bith.
So what’s the background that your gluing on called? Where did you buy it?! Where can I by it? - thanks 🖖🏻
It's a Dark cork wall, not sure where you can buy it though
Can i put a leachie in a 55 gallon long?
I want one gonna save up for at least 1, where did you get yours from?
from someone privately selling one. :)
Do you use lighting?
If they send you a free product it technically is a sponsorship. Especially if they are asking you to review it.
