The Apple G4 Cube Promotional Video

  • After introducing the G4 Cube at Macworld New York in 2000, here is the promotional video that was shown. Although praised for its innovative industrial design, the Cube fails to catch on with creative professionals because it's too expensive, not powerful enough and hard to upgrade. The Cube is "put on ice" in July 2001 with Apple promising that it will be "reborn" in another form at a later date. Its widely accepted that the Mac mini computer was its successful replacement.

Anyway, I'd say this is a good step for Apple to move into, and push the limits of smaller computer technology. I have to disagree on the whole argument that it's hard to upgrade a PC, though. Still don't understand why they are still using that argument.

    @TheSecretCobra well , the current Mac mini comes with a Radeon HD 6630m GPU which is more than adequate for gaming. The 2.7 GHz i7 in that model scores 6700 geekbench scores which is higher than the 2007 Mac Pro. And the Quad i7 in the Server edition is faster than the Mac Pro from 2008, scoring 9.9k geekbench scores.

    No need to be defensive. I know I came off like I was biting your head off, but it's just an opinion after all. But there is no need to whine about Macs being difficult to upgrade. RAM and the harddrive tend to be very easy to work with. The processor tends to be problematic, but the great thing about Mac OS X is that it tend to run reasonably well on even the older computers, such as the G3 iBook which a friend of mine still uses.

  • @DoctorAwesome
    @DoctorAwesome Před 17 lety

    That fellow is right, you're trying to compare hardware to software. And if you compare Mac OS to Windows OS, there's a much stronger base for the Windows and Unix kernel platforms. I am well aware Mac OS uses the Unix kernel, but it doesn't use it well.

    Unfortunately, the G4 Cube was hands down the worse computer ever developed. Everything was centered around a heat sink in the middle of the unit without any fans. The hard drive was extremely rough to remove from the unit. It had AGP graphics, but it was adapted to a PCI riser card, which reduced the 64bit AGP down to 32bit PCI. In my days of being an Apple repair technician, I have never seen a unit with as many problems as the G4 Cube. Just my two cents worth.
