Random Mesopotamian city noble: “It’s been 50 years. It’s too quiet”
Over the hills: “ASHUR! ASHUR! ASHUR! OI! OI! OI!”
    Noble: “There they are. Piss.”

Until the Assyrian army was reformed, they'd rock up at someone's gates and hang around demanding money until their logistical support ran out and they had to go home to farm. This became a noticeable pattern to their enemies too, whom eventually started just stocking up waiting for them to do the same old thing and then literally just wait for them to go home.
This worked. For a while. Then the Assyrians became capable of fielding armies for _years_ (long enough to wait the _cities themselves_ out) They were arguably the most organised war machines in history, prior to the Roman Empire. Even so, we know that morally, the Assyrians were beyond reprehensible according to not just modern standards, but most standards since that empire existed. I've seen leftist copium over the Assyrians. Angry folks crying about 'whataboutism' and 'muh Western imperialism'. Sorry, the Assyrians were next level horrendous.

If only they had gone far enough north to "civilize" the Germans and Russians! Imagine all the problems we could have avoided the last century or so.
    Kidding! Just kidding!
