    👋🏻 Hi everyone! Thanks for all who were able to watch the premiere with me! I sincerely appreciate all of your support! 💕 Just a little add-on to the content in this video... if your child answers incorrectly during the three period lesson, your general tactic will be to stop the lesson and return to the previous period. Most important is to remember to go slow and provide your child with plenty of time for repetition and gradual mastery. Do not rush them. You will not typically go through an entire three period lesson the first several times that you do it; you will only focus on the first and/or second periods, depending on how quickly your child seems to be learning the sounds. If they seem to be answering incorrectly very often, that’s a clear sign that you are moving too quickly.

      If there are no Montessori School near you and you teach them this way at 3, will they learn the names in time for school? So they aren't "behind"

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, from what I gather, they tend to pick up the names pretty quickly once they’ve learned the sounds!

    I was in a Montessori learning environment until I started kindergarten, and I vividly remember how much I loved sandpaper letters and numbers. We used to put a piece of paper over the letters and rub over them with a crayon to make the letters transfer onto the paper. I still don't know if that was something our teachers came up with, or if one of my classmates created that activity

    Great job! Something to add is (not that you did this) many people schwa or add the /uh/ sound to the phonemes, or incorrectly pronounce vowels. As adults who have been reading for years/not decoding sound by sound, you forget or potentially never knew the isolated sounds. Wilson language videos on CZcams have pretty good demonstrations of the sounds, I’d recommend every single person double check their sound skills! lol

    I love this! I had children who, in Continuous Provision time, put paper over the letters to do rubbings of them. They were semi successful depending on what they used. I was just happy they used them in their free time as well as in Literacy class haha In our ESL environment, we used jolly phonics phases to order the teaching of the sounds instead of the alphabet to enable them to start blending sounds. But these children were atleast 4-5yrs old. I adore your montessori series and love to see how you adapt it to your preferences. I look forward to the next video! Thank you always, Ashley ♥

      It is not a trend in India but my school did it. I remember when my teacher was introducing the letter F, she asked us what it is, a child from my class said the name, my teacher said no, it is ( sound ) and after that we never learned the letter name, we caught it by ourselves. Now after watching this, I know why

    I just ordered sandpaper letters and found you while searching for a tutorial on how to use them. This was so helpful, thank you!
    A couple questions (sorry if this has been answered):
    1) When you introduce the letters do you say the name of the letter or just the sound? “This is an M, it says mmm” or simply “This is an mmm”?
    2) Do you do each of the 3 periods in one sitting or do you work on period 1 each day until they’ve mastered it and then add period 2, etc. Hope this makes sense...
    Thank you again for sharing!

    There is so much pressure in my mom group. I have a 15 month old who just loves to run around and "discover" things to take them apart. I dont do "class" or flashcards with her yet but I read to her a lot and we play all day. She throws away her own trash, shes funny as hell and she likes things neat and orderly lol. But the kids in the group can already site letters, colours and numbers and they are around 18 months old. Their moms do flashcards and "class". I feel like I am not doing enough "class" but I also feel like she is doing just fine. It gives me anxiety because I am doubting myself

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  Před 4 lety +8

      DO NOT. Young kids learn through play! You are doing exactly what you should be! I’m pretty sure there’s research I’ve seen that shows that kids who wait to learn their numbers and letters and whatever until they get to school are no further behind than their peers who came to school already knowing them... they pick it up quickly anyway and end up being at the same pace as all the others. Play is the BEST for her brain development right now, and if Kylie weren’t actually interested in learning letters, I wouldn’t be doing them either! 🥰

    In my native language, we usually read in typed ver of letters and write in cursive. They are pretty different from each other. As I understood sandpaper letters are an intro to reading and pre-writing (since they are tracing them) activity. Is it better to first introduce "reading letters" and then cursive or introduce both?
    Note: in my language, you can start reading once you learn letters (we don't usually learn their names, I mean they are very close to sounds and no one uses them). Not as complex as in English, you only need to learn how to blend them and you are reading. No special phonics rules or sight words. Thank you!

    Hi. I’m trying to incorporate more Montessori with my younger learner who is left handed. I want to try the sandpaper letters with him. When I demonstrate the tracing, should I do it right handed because that’s natural to me, or should I do it left handed because of his obvious dominance in that hand? I’ve already struggled a bit in this department when we tried a veggie cutting activity. He didn’t want to do it with his right hand, and I was a bit nervous to try helping him slice with my left hand. Obviously, tracing is a much simpler task! But I would love to hear thoughts on how to best demonstrate for my left handed learner when I don’t have much confidence in my poor left handed abilities.

    These videos are amazing! I am trying to introduce more Montessori themes at home and am finding your videos so useful! I love these videos where you explain specific activities as it gives me ideas for home. I’ve already bought some little bug toys after watching one of your other videos.
    Question: what do you say when the child gets it correct and what do you say when they get it wrong? What do you do if they aren’t interested at all?
    Also any tips on kids that move between activities really quickly and don’t really stick to something for any length of time? Or is it best just to go with the flow and do a million things in day?
    Thanks a million xxx

      If they get it right, keep it simple: “Yes, that’s ssss.” And there’s a whole article in my pinned comment about how to handle incorrect responses. 👍🏻

      As for your other questions... always follow the child! Don’t force it. If they’re not interested, then so be it. They might be at a later time, at which point you can reintroduce it.

      Jessalee Fiegen I’m currently a stay at home mom, although I am a certified teacher with plans to return to work eventually! And yes, this CZcams thing has turned into a full-on work at home job! Thank you so much for always watching and commenting, your support is what makes this so fun for me to do!

    Where can I get an affordable set of tiny figurines to use while teaching sounds? Such as a tiny mop for “m”

    Do you have Montessori training? No judgement, just wondering. I’m looking into going for my primary training for teaching. Love the philosophy :)

      I am entirely self-taught at the moment, although I am a certified public school teacher so I do have some child development and education background that is still relevant. When I return to work, my plan is to go back to get my Montessori certification for Assistants to Infancy (0-3) so I can teach in a Montessori nido! :)

      Hapa Family teaching in a nido sounds incredible! I taught “ traditional” ECE for ten years and I could not stand all the plastic toys and bins. It wasn’t until I started as a Montessori assistant that I saw the difference! Best of luck to you and your channel is great!

      I haven’t done a video on it yet, I’m waiting until Kylie is actually interested in numbers… But yes, the number symbols are taught in a similar fashion. There are sandpaper numbers.

    What should I do if I started teaching the name of the letters? Do I now start asking for the sounds? I have a 3.5 year old who can sight half of the alphabet. I don’t want to confuse him but I think what you said makes a lot more sense of why would would teach sounds first

      This is a great read published by AMI for learning how to introduce writing and reading, including instructions on how to play the sound games: www.montessori-namta.org/Print-Publications/Back-Issues-of-The-NAMTA-Journal-Quarterly/293-A-Path-for-the-Exploration-of-Any-Language-Leading-to-Writing-and-Reading
      I summarize/demo some of the basic parts of this article here: czcams.com/video/5KiKfYda7tU/video.html The sound games usually start around age 2.5 and symbols of the alphabet are typically introduced around 3.5 or 4. Hope this helps!

    • @HapaFamily
      @HapaFamily  Před 4 lety +1

      I don’t see why you couldn’t abandon what you’ve been doing, and instead start focusing entirely on sounds. As long as you stick with one approach, and don’t go continually back-and-forth, then it won’t be confusing. Once he’s mastered the sounds, then you can go back to teaching the names of letters again, and there’s a good chance he’ll pick them up pretty quickly at that point.

      Not yet, just self-taught at the moment. 🥰 I’m actually a public school teacher, though, and once both of my girls are in school full-time, I am planning to go back to get my Montessori certification so that I can teach in a Montessori school instead. 👍🏻
