We have 14 livestock working Kangals. Eleven are intact females, two are castrated males, and one intact male. They are a fantastic team. I cannot imagine Kangals not being free to run over acres and do their job. We have bred them, and we help other livestock people introduce their pups from us.
These dogs are not food motivated. Their job is far more important than food.
They are fantastic family dogs as working dogs. They are totally trustworthy with our guests, especially with little ones. They are great with our other dogs Vizslas, Dobermans, German Shepherds. They insist on respect and calmness.
Our dogs get to do their work, get lots of exercise.
At 15 months they are still ‘pups’. At 2 years of age they change. They get much more confident. At 3 years they are very confident. They are now very powerful and full grown. Our dogs are extremely gentle with us, yet take on predators like Jaguars. They do not tolerate stupid dog behavior, or stupid people behavior.
I can break up a fight with 100lb Doberman & German Shepherds. I will not try to break up a Kangal fight. I have seen our dogs dominate 40-80 lb pitbulls in seconds. I have also heard and within minutes seen results of them terminating a livestock predator of similar size. I have seen them kill large snakes. They are smart, watchful, and extremely fast.
Though we trust our dogs totally, we know that any one of them could take us down very quickly.
Only very experienced large dog people should have these dogs.
Drop by Rainbow River Inn Canines on Facebook to see our Kangals working in the jungle.

They can adapt to different environments to a degree but their true nature is to be a working dog and guard livestock.
When I first got Anatolians years ago I didn't realize how much they needed and desired a job until I got livestock and saw how much more content they were out with the sheep/goats with job to do. They love going on their walks in the mountains and etc but are always happy to get back to their "job".
It is where their true nature comes out as they are a primal breed and having been guarding livestock for literally thousands of years.
If someone wants a guardian dog that can visit dog parks esp off leash , there are many breeds better suited. Once they reach maturity (can be 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 years) the change in their guarding instincts can be dramatic and a true Kangal , Anatolian, Akbash, Boz etc… can be a liability at such places. If they go there enough they will identify it as their territory and dominate other dogs.
I used to work with rescue for these type dogs and many end up in shelters getting euthanized because they are becoming more popular and people try and raise them to be what they were never intended and in the end simply can't handle them even after professional training. They are not vicious but are serious dogs and can be a threat to other dogs in the wrong circumstances.

Great video! I’ve owned only one Kangal and I can tell you for certainty that they are fantastic dogs! Kangals make wonderful family dogs however from my experience they prefer to be outside dogs roaming the fence line keeping guard on the property. A lot of training is required to let them off the leash. I have Cain Corsos and Presa Canarios and they don’t require as much training to walk off leash as a kangal does. I’ve never owned a breed as independent as the kangal. Great pet, great protector! Love this breed!

When roaming/walking outside of his home, the Kangal instinctively becomes the guard dog in the process of "claiming" the area. When called, he will hear and acknowledge you but his "duty" as a working dog is a higher priority for him and will respond after he feels he has the area secured, is often confused with independence although they are highly independent in doing their jobs and will go about it in their own way ignoring instructions or seem to be ignoring you but that is due to their confidence in their own abilities.
They can be very sensitive emotionally and have known to sulk in child like manner from time to time to their owners that usually doesnt last too long.

He’s a gentle giant, super good with dogs of all sizes. He matches the level of play with the other dogs. If they’re gentle so is he. If they’re rough he matches the play.

I like this. These are real dogs. Socialization is key but they stay dominant dogs. That adolescent fear period is really critical to get it right. If they don’t understand very much fear aggression is the worst to deal with from being not predictable.
It’s 1000 hours of nagging and shutting down punky behavior when it’s simmering. About year three they grow a brain. They need a person to hang out with for at least 15 hours a day-or maybe live at a farm.
It’s a dominant, amicable dog. But you have to calmly guide that aggression. Untouched they want to keep a border and run off anything that comes by.

After watching your vid with my wife, I took Pasha our 13 months old Kangal for a walk up the mountain on a windy road to test out if he displays disobedience or failed recall. He has been pushing the distance limit (away from me) last couple of months. The bigger he has gotten, the more brazen and confident, but he has always come back on command. Today was no exception. At one point he had bolted around a bend 150m away and I couldn't see him. My first call is a whistle. If no response, I shout normally: Pasha come back here. If still no response, I shout with an angry/aggressive tone. He came back like a bullet on the last call. It's because he knows the consequences of his Alpha being angry.
We have established who is the Alpha. We have established the boundaries Pasha must not cross. These 2 are constant ongoing exercises. In your video you mentioned watch videos on wolf behaviour. Well, the Alpha is very aggressive to those who choose to disobey and physically hurts them. I've been following the same pattern. I even have made a particular growl when I want Pasha to drop something and submit.
So in conclusion, I think your dog Ash is challenging your Authority. You seem like a kind person who can't hurt an insect. A non-aggressive kind of being. And that doesn't do you favours exerting Authority over this type of dog. This breed needs to also fear you to some extent to heed your command. It needs to be broken. If I was a shepherd and needed Pasha for guarding a herd, I would not have taken this route. Because I would want him to listen to his natural herding instincts first and then me. But he is guarding us and our home against people. A setting that requires him to adhere to My commands at all times.
You need to establish your Authority. This dog will get bigger and bolder and if he doesn't listen to you now, it won't listen to you later down the track.
Apologies for the long comment. All the best 🙏

@@ashthekangal Maybe or maybe in this instance, he didn't hear me until I raised my voice and changed the tone from happy to "I mean business" one (he was a fair distance away and around a bend). The "I mean business" call works first time, Always. From what I've seen of other breeds I think the Kangals mental process is different. When other dogs obey immediately, the Kangal is still pondering on "how much can I push the envelope/get away with before I get in to trouble". Kangals are not people pleasers. They are more self oriented and only obey commands because they feel they have to according to their rank in the pack. The "I mean business" call reminds my Kangal of his place in our pack and gets him back All the time as I've tried it on the first call back many times.
This is my first dog ever and as I do with other living beings observe it closely to better understand it's psychology. To me at this stage of his life he is behaving like my son was doing at age 3-6 and pushing his boundaries set by me. That's what my dog is doing now and it's not about contesting the alpha status. If it was being contested, Pasha would ignore my come back commands altogether on our outings as well as basic commands at home.
All dogs even of the same breed do not have the same personality. I'm only sharing what's happening here for you to compare and see if it applies to your Kangal.

@@aslantheguardian9008 Unfortunately your situation is not the same as what I am experiencing at the moment with Ash. Ash's recall is not an issue. The issue that I have with him is that after we have gone for a 10 km walk and it is time to leave he will stay far enough away from me so I can not leash him back to go home. He stays 50 to 60 feet away from me when he recognizes the end of the trail. This behaviour began when he was around 13 months. I am in the process of un teaching him this bad behaviour and that being back on the leash is not a bad thing.

I have been researching these type of breeds for a little while now, I am very interested with the Turkish breeds. From what I have seen there are the five most popular livestock type dog breeds that come from turkey that people for whatever reason just can’t seem to understand which is which. There is the Kangal which is most popular, the Akbash, Askaray malakli, the Karadeniz, and the Boz shepherd. Anatolian shepherds are not actually a specific breed rather a mix of one of these breeds, the people from the Anatolian mountains just call them this to generalize. The kangal and the Anatolian are not the same. The kangal and the boz are not the same dog. The kangal is it’s own phenotype. The boz is it’s own phenotype. They are all individual breeds. This dog in the video is what you would call an Anatolian shepherd, because it doesn’t belong to a single phenotype. Sure it may favor the boz or the kangal, but it is not one. In reality almost every single kangal you see outside of turkey is probably not an actual kangal, it is most likely a mix.

    • @ashthekangal
      @ashthekangal  Před rokem

He is Boz/Kangal. It is my understanding, as well as, our breeders that a Boz is a mix of large headed kangal with a normal size headed kangal. They are still considered a kangal though. They are just larger. With Ash's breeding stock a pure kangal was brought back into the bloodline. If we continue breeding kangal in the bloodline eventually within 5 to 10 bloodlines we would have full kangal.

I wanna say, if he someday decides that a predator or any aggression is implying danger to you, and he gets his protective instincts on fire, no way in hell he will let you hold him or leash him. In such situations kangals tend to have no reverse gear, they don't back off, go to the owner. They are so obsessed with establishing the security of the environment or whatever they think they gotta protect.

If I was in the city, I would not take any of my Kangals to a dog park. I took my Vizsla male to a dog park for a year. He was great, but too many people there were clueless about dog behaviour, and their dogs were out of control. Our 3+ year old Kangals would not tolerate the behaviour of these other dogs.
At 15 months old, he is still a pup in the Kangal world. At two years of age they are a stable working dog. At three they come into their own. They will let other dogs know they are crossing the line, but there are too many improperly socialized dogs at a dog park. If they go to the dog park several times, they will decide it is their park. This means all other dogs will need to behave properly or else.
I love this breed. They are our most favourite breed. We have 14 working Kangals. I hope for you and Ash the very best.

She's the most loyal dog I've ever had, she is an amazing guard dog and always monitors other dogs and people. If they step out of line she's on it in an instant, and will go like a bullet towards any perceived threat. I have to be careful letting her off the lead: she never runs away but there's always a risk of her rushing off if she thinks there's a threat nearby. Wherever we are, that's HER territory!

Other than the standard required coloring (or lack of) how can you say "not a Kangal"? US Kennel Clubs don't have a Kangal breed designation yet, unfortunately. UK does. My Kangal is always on a leash outside the pasture, otherwise she will take off (with or without a treat reward) and roam my rural neighborhood and come back when she pleases. I use an electric fence, which she won't come within three feet of. I've resigned myself to having to keep her fenced to keep her from wandering. If anyone gets a Kangal or Anatolian puppy thinking they're getting a sweet little dog, they are in for a BIG surprise. These are serious dogs that become dead serious when it comes to protection. I'm not trying to lecture you. Of course. I'm convinced that of all the domesticated dogs or even wolfdogs, Kangals or Anatolians are the best ones, at least for their purposes. Better than Caucasians or other bigger, scarier dogs. Maybe one on one a Kangal would be outmatched by the Ovcharka, but three on three, I think the Kangals could win because they probably know better what they're doing. I certainly have a hard time imagining the Ovcharka doing as well as the Kangal as an LGD, protecting and surviving. I hear they live about half as long, too. Sometimes bigger isn't better.
