  • Let's take a evening drive through Connecticut and check out how Hyundai's semi-autonomous highway driving system called Highway Drive Assist or HDA (level 2) performs at sunset and on poorly marked roads. What has your experience been like with the system? Let me know in the comment section.
    Hope you all enjoyed the Short Circuit reference in the thumbnail. Its one of my favorite childhood films.

    I am only half through the video (my kids constantly trying to get my attention) and already it is the best video covering Ioniq5's HDA in thr whole of CZcams. Really really well made. Also with the timer and the screen in screen. Thank you so much for creating this! 🙂 I feel better prepared now when I will drive my family around in the new car and better know what to expect (and where the systems limits are).

    A very helpful review. Here in the UK I used the highway drive assist on the M 25 around London. It was great, it took much of the stress out of working with very variable speed traffic both stop go , middle speed, and high speed. Felt fairly relaxed when I got home to Colchester.

    I found if you reduce speed to the posted speed limit, or slightly below if traffic isn’t an issue, then lane keeping assist seems to handle the slightly sharper curves. I found when driving between 10-20 mph over the limit it struggles. Otherwise it works as you have demonstrated. This is the nicest care my wife and I have owned in terms of technology and are loving it as a daily driver. We have an SEL model.

    Been driving a 2022 Niro EV as a rental car for a few days and noticed how confident the system is. I believe it's the regular steering assist function, not HDA. Though, it's much more confident compared to Honda Sensing. It rarely gives up and will eventually, but unfortunately, ping-pong its way back into the lane around corners that Honda Sensing won't and can't do even with the OpenPilot system I have installed.
    I still want a sedan. So I am patiently waiting for the IONIQ 6. Things like this and my rental car make me very excited about the thought of installing OpenPilot in it and watching it eat those corners on the highway all while being electric.

    I've had my 2023 Ioniq 5 AWD SEL now for 6 weeks and just found out today that this car has HDA 2. My sales guy said it did not have HDA 2 when I asked about it, so I have just assumed up to this point that he was correct. Your video educated me to the differences and now I know! Another thing I learned about the system is that it must be on a highway it knows about to use the lane change assist. My daily commute is on a new stretch of freeway that only opened about 3 months ago and even though it is US interstate highway and 3 lanes wide, the lane change assist will not work. I was actually on a different freeway yesterday when I noticed some new icons on my display when I set the cruise control plus I noticed when I engaged the turn signal it turned the lane next to me green (on the display). I thought to myself, I have never seen this before! Again, I really didn't know what I had or how to use it until I saw your video - so a big THANK YOU!!!

    Great video. The first month I used it I had some issues with it hugging the right side of the lane and it showing me in the center. Not sure if it has learned how I drive but it is definitely better than it was. I think the timing of "keeping your hands on the wheel" depends on your speed and how the roads are. The roads by me are terrible and can be a bit iffy sometimes.
    One thing I do think it should have is that when the HDA system doesn't recognize your hands, it should slow the car to a stop and put the hazards on in case the driver passed out or had a medical issue. Just my opinion.
    Just hit 5000 miles yesterday on mine! Keep the videos coming.

    Hi! Great videos! I noticed when you used the indicator the blind-spot indicator didn't flash up on your cluster - are you not on the top trim? I see that you do have indicators showing cars on either side of you...I have to say I am confused by all the different names that are used especially between the USA/Canada and Europe. In Iceland, where I live, Hyundai only sells three trims, which they confusingly call "Comfort" which I guess is the basic SE, then we get "Style" (which we bought) and finally "Premium" which is the top trim: glass roof etc. I haven't tried the HDA yet - basic lack of highways in Iceland, lol. Would the "Style" version have HDA 1.5 or 2 and how would I know which one?

    Re-watching this video, can you do a follow up video testing HDA on 2-lane highways? It appears that HDA is only active when the lane marking graphics are green (like at 20:45). At 18:35 when you were on the 2-lane road the lines were white - meaning that only standard LFA was active.
    You should test it on a two-lane road that is a US highway. In this video you tested it on a state highway which probably wasn't classified as a "major highway" in the nav system. It would also be helpful to mount a GoPro on the steering column so we can see the instrument cluster display in detail. Thanks. 😊

    @ASeale74 Před rokem +3

    dunno if you've figured this out yet (not quite halfway in the video) but to help you understand the "keep your hands on the wheel" timing: remember you have to twitch the wheel to remind it you're there and that's because it uses resistance to know, so the more it has to turn left and right then the sooner it will know you're not touching the wheel. So the straighter the road the less it will ask of you cause it doesn't know you're not there.

    Although it is called automatic lane change, it doesn't automatically change lanes if your speed drops below your set point of 73 behind the car ahead. For example, around 5:20 it starts dropping down to 64 mph and there is no sign of a car coming up in the left lane. Probably best to call it lane changing assistance.

The very frequent and loud tones, buzzers, etc. on the Tesla are a bother, particularly if you have had the car a long time and know how to drive it. One more question as I could not ctrl-F the digital owners manual for this - when I'm using google maps and naving, the HDA indicators go on, I have seen the "NAV" go to green once in a while.... What does it mean when the "NAV" on top of the HDA indicators go solid green? Thanks!

  • @alkemix
    @alkemix Před 5 měsíci

    The hda seems to do pretty good for long stretch highways but surprised as well as it does on the highway it didn't handle those relatively long side street sweeping turns. Hoping a few more updates from kia and it's doing lane keep as well as basic autopilot, which would make kia cars VERY capable.
    Keep testing it, keep making videos, keep pressing the car makers to make it better and you're gonna see good updates from kia. This is the next gen car feature. It was GPS, then Bluetooth, then multimedia screens, then carplay. Now it's autosteer and unless you push the car makers to focus on nailing it, you're gonna get lukewarm capabilities and unused features like lumbar support for the back middle seat.

  • @ArtiePenguin1
    @ArtiePenguin1 Před rokem

    At 18:30 is the HDA icon in green? Your steering wheel blocks it so we can't see in the video.
    I've seen other videos where HDA is active on secondary (2-lane highway) roads. That would go against what Kia & Hyundai have publicly announced that it relies on pre-mapped roads. Maybe they meant "pre-mapped" to be any road in the navigation system and not just selected ones like Ford's BlueCruise or GM's SuperCruise.
    I'm getting the EV6 Wind RWD trim and unfortunately Kia locks the HDA 2.0 version in the GT-line trim (or AWD with Tech package). Thankfully, HDA 1&2 are almost identical except for auto lane change, which I'm okay doing manually anyways.

    • @TheIoniqGuy
      @TheIoniqGuy  Před rokem +1

      I can't recall. HDA can only be activated on major roadways which I believe just means whatever the navigation data tells the system is a highway. I don't think the highways are actually mapped. I think it just allows activation when it knows that it's on a highway. In my experience, I believe you can only activate it on a divided highway.

    • @ArtiePenguin1
      @ArtiePenguin1 Před rokem

      @@TheIoniqGuy That was my second theory: that the roads aren't "mapped" or "hand selected" but based on road classification in the nav system. Maybe you can do a test on an un-divided US highway.

I believe that the issues you were having when it stopped working in the turns is because the lane markings disappear for the intersection. My experience has been that HDA is heavily dependant on consistent lane markings.

I would like to see how HDA 2 reacts to other cars merging into the lane since the higher trim has more sensors. HDA 1 does pretty well at this sometimes but sometimes i need to help. My only other complaint is with the Adaptive Cruise Control. I wish it would have a smoother automatic braking. When approaching heavy traffic it brakes very late and abruptly So i really don't trust it at large speed changes.
