Fallout Interview: Xelia Mendes-Jones on Dane's Backstory & Season 2 Goals

- If you’ve seen The Wheel of Time and Fallout, there’s a good chance we had a similar viewing experience. The entire Wheel of Time ensemble is fantastic, but Season 2, which dropped on Prime Video from September 1 to October 6, brought in a new standout character, Renna, the Seanchan sul’dam responsible for making it an especially dark season for Madeleine Madden’s Egwene. As terrible as Renna is, you can’t take your eyes off her, and the credit for that goes to the actor in the role - Hollywood newcomer Xelia Mendes-Jones.
Cut to April 2024. Fallout hits Prime Video and becomes an instant sensation. The majority of the season puts the spotlight on Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten, all of whom give powerhouse performances. With only eight episodes, a bunch of curious locations, a number of key factions to establish, and quite a few complex agendas unfolding, how does an actor with minimal screen time in just two episodes manage to make an impression? Ask Mendes-Jones, because that’s exactly what he does with his character, Dane, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel.
With screen presence like that, there’s no doubt in my mind Mendes-Jones’ star will continue to soar, so he instantly became a top priority guest for Collider Forces.

Oh wow, I definitely picked up on those moments when Renna lost her cool but never quite got all the way to "she didn't break Egwene, Egwene broke her". That's perfect. I absolutely loved Xelia's portrayal of Renna.
Xelia Mendes-Jones has been great in Fallout. Love the show and the character is well acted and interesting. When a story focuses on the characters and the plot and does this with respect to the source material with the performances then I think it makes everything so much more special and palatable to the audience. Great job so far. You seem like a very talented and smart performer.
“I thought the toughest part would be convincingly making her hateful. And then what ended up being the toughest part was seeing everyone hate her.
Perfect quote! I felt that! Renna had layers that we could see and layers she kept hidden. The portrayal was so human and real, that viewers intensely connected to her in a way that they just can’t with the bigger villains.
I can't imagine that the physicality and development of personal initiative through having done soccer at such a high level didn't have an important impact on this path. That's a cool skill set to bring into an acting career.

I was immediately attached to Dane (and their relationship to Maximus) when they showed up; I won't go into the inner universe I explored when imagining the time Dane believed Max dead. Really looking forward to the evolution of this character and their attachments to other characters in the future. And thank you, Xelia, for portraying Dane so perfectly

I came here for Fallout, but now I have to check out Wheel of Time.
And I may have also obsessed a little too much going over Dane's scenes to try and figure out stuff. Because I feel like Dane's role is a bit like Eponine to Max/Lucy as Marius/Cosette. Like, I don't know if the script included anything about the background music, but the music lyrics when Dane and Max are fighting side by side are all about "I don't want to see tomorrow unless I see it with you."
So I was thinking Dane was not thrilled about the idea of going off to live in the vault with Max and Lucy, getting to see Max and Lucy together all the time. They'd rather go die in battle side by side with Max than that. (Which mirrors Eponine's thinking in Les Miz.)
But yeah ... just me overthinking things.
For some reason, I never really pondered the fact that Dane thought Max was dead. Seems obvious in retrospect but somehow in all my overthinking I just never thought about that.
One of the best things about watching Wheel of Time fans react to Fallout was the moment they’d recognize “Renna” and and then absolutely freak out.
Pretty much everyone of them yelled “That’s Renna!” while doing the Leonardo-pointing meme. Then trying to disconnect Dane from Renna took them a little while. They were going “Agh! I hate Renna so much! But I think I like Dane! Agh!” It was delicious. 😂

At last an interview with this magical man! He is simply captivating in every role we've seen so far. Good to hear I'm not the only one who absolutely loves Renna, thanks to Xelia's magnificent performance. I wish Dane had more screen time, but here's to hoping they're more prominent in season 2. Can't wait to see Xelia shine in more projects, cause he is incredibly talented (and (sorry to be superficial) incredibly hot). A true superstar in the making.
I love Dane Maximum relationship. They show real brotherhood instead inside toxic environment which i believe the cleric noticed and hope more of this quality in the Brotherhood.

A degree is a degree, it opens up critical thinking skills, how to research and write reports, how to manage your time, its not useless it helped you get where your at now simply by having it, it opens up opportunities even if they are not in the same field for what you go for, you are correct though a masters is pointless really especially if you are trying to get out and get on with life, great advice from this great actor - great things await him - congratulations Xelia, good work on fallout it is awesome.
