    Having played nearly every major ARPG since Diablo 2, I find Grim Dawn to be the most well designed and overall satisfying experience in the genre. The number of QoL advancements this game made, has caused me to pretty much stop playing all similar games that came before it. From the first time I played it in early access more than 5 years back, I knew this game would eat up a major portion of my life. And it did.

    11:11 Hey, I actually think the story and world-building is one of the strong points of Grim Dawn. Without it I definitely would not have been sucked into the game. The handcrafted environments also match with the lore very well and give as sense of exploration and wonder. Let's not send the message to game developers that players don't care about these elements.

    What stands out about _Grim Dawn_ to me is that it is made by devs for devs. i.e. They built a game they wanted to play with constant balancing and tweaking. The graphics and music are excellent. They also embraced the community and natively incorporated a loot filter. Everything about Crate reminds me of Blizzard pre-WoW days.
    This mini-documentary is excellent -- filling in some of the developmental timeline.

    @PowermadNavigator Před 3 lety +8

    My most played game on Steam and a game which I quite quickly fell in love with and spent a very good deal of time playing in 2019 and I still play it.
    There are a lot of others out there with more time than me, of course and it's all possible because this game just brings quite a few things to the table that other games did not. I of course played Diablo, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, Path of Exile... this seems to be my absolute favorite, though and I have not really gotten tired of playing it. It has been with me through some tough times and that's even more reason to love it.
    The atmosphere it has is something I love, the way things like the lore are plotted out, not only in notes, but in short descriptions in items, in the Devotion tree, in interactions with characters and on the skills you use themselves is something you do not see often. Something you do not see at all in most cases.
    "The armor of famed tactician, General Markovian, who valiantly joined his men on the frontlines in every battle." as a description for an in-game item set. Pure awesome. Too bad General Markovian is not in the game, haha, but totally down to collect that set and use it on a character just by reading that description.
    Getting to know more about this guy really fleshes out on what a badass he must have been and the game does this in a fantastic way which I will not spoil further.
    If you are not playing this game, you are missing out.
    I found the action great, the animations too, I do not really mind small things like that and I loved the story.
    There is more than one bad guy so that's explained a bit too loosely here. There is a good deal of gray area fuckery going around and that really adds to the feel.
    Disclaimer, I was not a big fan of these types of RPGs, I was never turbo into Diablo or the others, but I am really stuck on Grim Dawn. It grabbed me, plain and simple and it can grab a lot of people. I STRONGLY recommend you try to get caught and bring friends. This game synergizes with friends in ways other games do not because of the way classes and skills are built in this game. You open 10 cans of whoop-ass a minute with the right combo... I love the co-op, but not all people do. I think it does shine on its own. It sure helps gain a quicker understanding of the game if you play with close friends.

    • @painfullyaware5221
      @painfullyaware5221 Před 3 lety +8

      If you didn't like D3, you might not like Last Epoch. LE is very much an updated, evolved D3 with the same type of map design (pretty linear) and the same emphasis on class identity over build diversity. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely some build variety in LE, but nothing like GD. LE is certainly a good game, I've got 80 hours in it so far, but it's very different than GD (1,000 hours so far). GD places much more emphasis on exploration and feels more open world.

    • @charliem5604
      @charliem5604 Před 3 lety +5

      @@painfullyaware5221 I'm okay with it sharing some similarities with D3, but I can definitely see how there's more depth in GD (albeit one's a finished game the other is still in EA). What appeals to me most of LE I guess is is the classes and the whole time travel mechanic looks interesting, and I've heard some say it feels like a decent mix of both diablo with poe. I'm going to hold off on trying it anyway until it's out of EA and even if I don't like it as much as GD it's nice to have variety. Thanks for letting me know what you think though! It's always nice to hear another players experience and now I have a much better idea of what to expect from LE.

      @aurelianmanoli7359 Před 3 lety +3

      @@charliem5604 I have many many hours in D3, PoE, GD and LE. I'll put it this way: D3 is easy mode, builds are not fancy, straight forward, easy to master. POE is a second job. Nice game but it's made for the hard-core audience. LE it's a mix between D3 and POE. There are plenty of builds to make and the gameplay is fluid, nice combos, easy campaign but end game can get difficult. Also Last Epoch has the best crafting system hands down. No one does is better. Grim Dawn it's an epic game with no multiplayer.

    13:00 I wanted to address this part about wide open maps a bit. In general, this is correct, but I have one major pet peeve with what is otherwise one of my favorite games. In various zones, you'll find your progress stymied by indestructible obstructions within the level architecture/geometry that force you to take different paths through a zone. It's usually not that much of an issue, but there's a few places where it's so bad that you have what looks essentially like a wide open zone with only one really long and winding way through it because almost every other potential passage is blocked. The worst contenders of this style of level design are the city of Malmouth and Port Valbury. I mean, I get it from a plot angle, those are cities that were swallowed by what is essentially a horde of aetherial zombies so there's barricades everywhere. Doesn't make it any less of a hassle to navigate through those zones, though.

The whole game is there for you to explore and absorb at your own rate. The coolest shit is not in a cash shop, but out in the world or from within a well done crafting system! It boggles the mind that there is no battle pass to buy! Other devs should take note of how this goes, I’ve nearly checked out of the games as a service predation we have going on that permeates nearly everything outside of indies, and I’m likely to fanboy these devs and buy without hesitation whatever comes next.

    The game looks so much better and more immersive if you turn off the damage numbers and health bars over the monsters.

    To whoever doesn't play this game yet, it worth your time. There is even a mod that increase the basic 9 classes to 55 classes (mostly from other game such as D2, D3, titan quest) and very interesting to combine 2 of them nonetheless.

    Grim Dawn is without a doubt the best arpg ever made IMO.
    I legit haven't been able to enjoy another one since. Every arpg I play just makes me think "I'd rather replay Grim Dawn"
    I need to get a Steam Deck so I can play it on the go.

    I pirated Grim Dawn last week and I only hit level 8 before I snatched the Definitive edition off GOG. I can’t believe how good Grim Dawn is! I’m level 16 today and starting to feel and look like a badass. The pacing is done so well, and the loot system, while not exactly original, is just addictive! I’m even enjoying it with an Xbone controller because you can map almost anything to most buttons. I’m very grateful for Grim Dawn! I needed something to distract me from my anxiety and dealing with 2 deaths in 6 months. Stay safe and Happy 4th of July everyone! 🤘🏻❤️

    The thing that killed it for me was when i realised devotion points are limited below the amount of shrines so i left at level 60 or 70 something... Such a shame, i had a dream build mapped out, getting that far then realizing its not possible was such a downer.

    Just a heads up, it's not 72 combinations, it's 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 36 total classes. So 9 base, uncombined classes, and 27 class combinations.

    I'm playing Grim Dawn on a Ryzen 7 and 16gb ram but i was worried the Radeon vega 7 integrated graphics (512mb dedicated memory but shares system memory also) wouldn't quite like it but i was pleasantly surprised. I do have all the settings on low or off even though i could probably bump them up a bit, but i think it looks great, and when zooming in to look at the character the details of armor ect all look good and detailed.
    - Fantastic game.

    Regarding story in ARPGs, I think D2 is an amazing example. Solid story, occasionally interesting side quests, and amazing dialogue with most NPCs. It contributes to that game's legendary status. I'd also put GD's lore notes on a list of best-in-class story features. They're amazing!

    Yesterday, I bought 3 new games, based on your reviews. And they were super cheap on Steam. Sacred 2, Titan Quest and Grim Dawn. I have bits of them all. I really liked Titan Quest the most at first, but as time goes on, I am steering towards Sacred 2 for my first full playthrough. I also really like GD a lot so far, and it seems the smoothest, offering the most dynamic game play. I like the look and feel of Sacred 2 however.

    Absolutely agree. Grim Dawn is imo the best ARPG so far. And i have played them all for several hundred of hours. The pacing, the mechanics, the possibility of character buidling. Outstanding. I highly recommend the Mod Nydiamar Ultimate Version (with Diablo 3 classes available), if you have GD Vanilla played out a lot.

    One of the reasons Ive been on and off this game, even though the gameplay is AMAZING, was because of the graphics. But please don't be turned off by the graphics BECAUSE with a few mod like 4k textures, AND Reshades, you can get really pretty decent graphics, especially during nighttime. And now, I cannot stop playing this game. Of course it all depends on if your hardware can handle it. I have a 3090ti with 3440x1440p monitor and my fps goes from around 220-240fps to 95-120fps with graphics at max and Reshades. Also there is a software to help with CPU multi-threading! Cheers :)
