  • Moxie’s Breeding and Pregnancy Journey
    Moxie, our spirited and graceful paint horse, embarked on a remarkable journey to motherhood. The decision to breed Moxie was made with careful consideration, ensuring she was in optimal health and the timing was just right. Her cycles were closely monitored, and when she was in peak fertility, she was introduced to a carefully selected stallion, known for his excellent lineage and temperament.
    The breeding process was a blend of anticipation and hope. Moxie was live covered and the goal was to ensure a successful conception. After rendevoua with paint horse stallion, PNC Camoauge Kid, the exciting news came: Moxie was pregnant! The pregnancy period for horses is typically around 11 months, and Moxie’s journey was no exception at 343 days. Throughout this time, she received the best care possible. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and a stress-free environment were crucial to her well-being. As the months passed, Moxie’s belly grew, and so did the excitement for the new arrival.
    Moxie showed all the signs of a healthy pregnancy. Her appetite increased, and she became more affectionate and calm. As the due date approached, preparations for the foaling began. A comfortable and safe foaling area was set up, equipped with all the necessary supplies to ensure a smooth delivery.
    Finally, the big day arrived. Moxie went into labor, and with the support of her caretakers, she gave birth to a strong and healthy foal. The moment APHA Velvet Vixon aka Shine entered the world was nothing short of magical. The foal, with its bright eyes and sturdy legs, was a testament to Moxie’s strength and the careful planning that went into her breeding journey.
    Shine quickly adapted to her new surroundings, nursing from Moxie and taking her first wobbly steps. Moxie proved to be a nurturing and protective mother, guiding her foal and ensuring he felt safe and loved.

    She's beautiful! So glad you carefully researched the genetics to avoid a lethal white. We need more responsible breeders like you. I bet you were quite surprised when you first saw her standing and there was no hidden color.

      overo lethal white foal syndrome (OLWFS), is an autosomal genetic disorder most prevalent in the American Paint Horse. Affected foals are born after the full 11-month gestation and externally appear normal, though they have all-white or nearly all-white coats and blue eyes. However, internally, these foals have a nonfunctioning colon.

    Hi there. First of all i want to say that the way you care for your animals is beautiful, such care and respect that you give the. Beautiful. I'm Very new to learning about horse genetics and lineage and just wondering what the difference is between Maximum White and Lethal white in a Paint Foal? I was reading a book from the library describing horse breeds and it said occasionally paint horses will birth fully white foals called lethal white with underdeveloped digestive systems. Can you share your wisdom and explain the differenece for me please?

    • @CarianiFarms
      @CarianiFarms  Před měsícem +17

      Good Q. Maximum white is only a description of the phenotypical expression of white genes. A maximum white horse may or may not have Lethal White Overo genes (LWO). The black stallion at the beginning of the video has one copy of LWO which gives him the beautiful coat pattern he flaunts. And with one copy of LWO, there is no known deleterious effects of the gene. However, when two parents are LWO carriers, there is a 25% chance of creating a homozygous LWO foal with each crossing. So IF both parents carry LWO and the resulting embryo has one copy from each parent the lethal white overo foal will have problems. Moxie AQHA Sun Shinin on the Deck does not carry LWO however, she does carry a lot of genes that add white to a horses coat (Tobiano, Splashed White 5, and W20). The sire PNC Camouflage Kid DOES carry LWO. And miraculously Moxies first foal was gifted every white gene from both parents which made her coat completely white. She only carries one copy of LWO though so she will not have the same problems a homozygous LWO foal would have. She is Heterozygous for LWO; so as Shine ✨ grows into a mare it would not be wise to breed her to another carrier of LWO.

    Ahh she is a Tobiano. Palomino.. very nice. I bred paint paint years ago. I love the overo pattern. You can get that patten by using Leo bred or Three bars Qh. There gene are found heavy in the foundation paint horses. When I was doing the breeding we did not have genetic testing you had to know you bloodline. ❤

    Sadly, many non-lethal foals (all white Splash or Max white Sabinos mistakenly identified as OLWS babies) were put down for fear of letting them get to a painful state before suffering and having to be put down anyway.
    ❤I’m glad the testing is in place now to prevent that, but I researched dilution genes in horses for years and raised many blue eyed Splash AQHA (I was raising them right as AQHA started resentfully accepting them on DNA) horses that no one wanted back in the day. Now seems like everyone’s got one. I had high % Doc Bar (most of mine had more DB blood than an own grand get bc I loved that line) in all my horses along with many colorful creme dilutes.
    My favorite stud, an own son of Genuine Doc out of a granddaughter of Catalena Boy was a sweet and beautiful Buckskin Splash AQHA with the best temperament. People were always shocked to find out he was a stud. I miss Gen to this day. I lost him in April 2013.
    This is a blast from the past for me. Thanks for sharing.

    i cannot recall when the last time i saw an entirely white horse with absolutely no markings whatsoever AND not to mention the gorgeous blue eyes both blue and no dark liner around the eyes., all entirely white ... that is remarkable. so yes her coat and eyes are striking but im not a fan of her bone structure as others i am sure absolutely love it. reason i am a little shocked and a bit disappointed is, both her parents had solid and gorgeous bone structure so i am not sure why hers is a bit different than her parents.
