ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.
We upload a CZcams video every Saturday night at 7️⃣pm EST, and post daily on Instagram!

‘Oddly satisfying’ is how it feels watching most of your posts!
Most people overlook the importance of base compaction. Great execution and keep up the good work!
It seemed like a necessary extra step, especially once I saw how flat it made everything for the foam board!
Great music choices on this video. The compacting was very satisfying.
“Goodbye dirt!”
Haha thanks Nettie!!
I am from Guyana, South America, I am following this project and am patiently awaiting the concrete pour for the slab. 😁
Coming soon!!
I thought you were in GA. My bad.
Nice work!
I love using 304s for base, but 57 work nice to. Just alot more holes but works great since using insulation
I am getting 5/8" minus for crushed gravel. And for the price of renting a compacter you can almost buy one.
I did do that for the jumping jack tamper we used for electric service trenching. Looked into it for the plate compactor, but our local rental place was $70/half day so I didn't want to bother with buying something I might have to fix
Would have put a thin layer of sharp sand to lay insulation on
I noticed that you put the 57 directly on the plumbing. I would have thought that the plumbing would need to be covered with dirt before the 57. Just curious.
Either is fine but I want as little settling around underground pipes as possible. It would take a major concentrated force to hurt a schedule 40 pipe with 3/4” stone, I don’t even think my skid steer could do it if I drove directly on top
QUESTION - I removed a home that had a slab foundation and now my new house is calling for a crawl space so we have foundation walls and footings that are needed but right now theres a slope which is requiring a 5' stem wall but engeineer is telling me to use angular clear rocks and pound it in without inspection required. To me it sounds like it would be better to get the minus stuff in there to rid voids and provide better compact. Thoughts here? Am i crazy?
Use angular clean stone compacted with a gravel plate compactor in no more than 6" lifts. It is the best material for a drainable foundation base.
How much compaction did you notice? I am about to rake out the same rock and wanted to level before compacting to consider any settling. Thanks!
Very little to none, the compactor basically just settles the stone into each other to make a flat surface on top
The 3/4 clean gravel/rock or as it is usually called “#57” cannot be compacted. Theoretically and practically. Zero. What the compacting plate provided in this case is a flat surface, not a compacted layer of #57. Another important function of this layer of #57 is that doesn’t absorb water by capillarity keeping the water level as low as it comes naturally.
Incorrect. Here's some light reading from a PE if you don't believe me. See the last point. icpi.org/blog/the-myth-of-self-compacting-aggregates
Is that ok., to compact gravel on the PVC pipes? 😮
Yep! They're Sch40 solid wall, they're built for it
@@MasonDixonAcres Got it . Thanks
Trying to put together some mono slab 3.500
Why did you not just let the radon pipe out the side of the foundation. Thats the way its done in Ireland. Good luck with the rest of the build. :)
That's how our radon pipe was done. Pretty sure..cause I don't recall them drilling into our slab. According to some people, the radon thing is a scam..idk
Why not just a slab' why the wall then poured slab.?
