Reviewing records from TV stars who tried to have a music career.... Don Johnson, Burt Reynolds, Lynda Carter, Leonard Nimoy, The Brady Bunch, Bruce Willis, and more...
Sad to admit - the first time heard the song _'Day After Day'_ was on this album and liked the song. Years later I discovered 'Badfinger' & thought "They're doing a Brady Bunch track' - what a twat I was...! 🤣
Glad you're feeling better. Years ago, I bought a used copy of the Don Johnson lp thinking that there might be a sleeper hit because of all of the fantastic musicians playing on the record. Sadly, I was just left wondering how much cocaine was purchased throughout the recording process. 😅
In the '80s I would almost always stop by my buddy's used record store on my bike ride home from grad school, and on days when there were lots of customers in the store I'd stick my head in the door and loudly ask my buddy, "hey Ray, didya get any Telly Savalas records in this week?!" and he'd play along and say, "not this week, Jeff, but I'll keep an eye out for ya!!". I enjoyed the winces on the faces of the customers in the store in response to this asinine exchange.
Good to see you back in form Robert after your illness. You had me laughing away as always. I love your impersonations. And thank you for reviewing Pere Ubu's debut last month. I don't have the album anymore although I got a t-shirt made recently of the front cover artwork. Keep on keepin' on!
Funny story about the return of Bruno. One of my best friends dad used would to do D.J. work doing weddings, what have you. He would play Under the Boardwalk from this album, and if somebody could guess the famous person who sang it by the time the song ended, he would give them 20 bucks of his own money. He said in all his years of doing it, it was only guessed correctly twice, lol. He also legitimately liked the album, which is also funny. He's a great guy, though.
I always said it like this: Music for people who don't like music.Probably the biggest seller of these was John Denver. He managed to sell a LOT of records and influece absolutely no one musically. Peace and Love, Terry and Julia Tutor
Robert, you know way too much about, The Facts of Life. lol. Fuckin' Blair!! You really have some weird obscure stuff in that room. Love your videos!! Charles
I was aware of the Lenny and the Squigtones album because there was a rumour going around the internet about 20 years ago that the drummer on the back cover "Ming the Merciless" was actually Peter Criss - revealing his face in 1979 - well before he went solo and officially "unmasked". It's not Peter, but it does kinda resemble him a little.
I have the best of CD "Sunshine Day"...that song IS a bubblegum classic...and it's a fun listen, plus one of the greatest bands Redd Kross cover "Sunshine Day" & quote it in their own classic "Bubblegum Factory"!!
I am cracking up at the picture of Bruce Willis smirking while you give your review. It's like he's taking sick pleasure in how angry it makes you. I always assumed that was just a cash grab after Die Hard was a hit. The fact that this got made before Die Hard makes it even more inexcusable, haha. We thank you for suffering through all of these. The Lenny & Sqiuiggy seems interesting because I love Spinal Tap. Also, Lisa wishes her album was inspirational as Pet Sounds...
What no mention of the Burt Ward - of Batman Fame - record Orange Colored Sky? The man had to have been tone deaf. True story he said one time he was touring with Adam West on a Batman speaking tour but was apparently practicing his singing for this or another one of his songs. He was in his hotel room shower singing when a hotel workman broke into his bathroom because one of the guests had heard him singing and thought a cat had been locked in someone's room. lol. Listen to this at your own peril. czcams.com/video/YorYDQUlyuA/video.html
That's terrible. It's like he's purposefully trying to sing poorly. I'm surprised his ridiculous ego would allow him to mention the song later and tell that story.
Another great idea would be athletes who did albums. I have Lee Maye 45’s, who was a doo wop R&B singer in the 50’s as well as a horrible LP by Denny McClain. Terry Bradshaw did a country record as well.
Hey, glad to see you're doing better. I saw Vicki Lawrence not only released an album of her no. 1 hit about the night the lights went out in Georgia, but she also released TWO MORE afterwards. John Travolta released an album when he was mainly known as Vinnie Barbarino on Welcome Back Kotter. Pretty provocative back cover to that... And also Telly Savalas and Tony Randall and Jack Klugman put out albums as their popular TV show characters. The 1970s was indeed a wild decade. Ha. And I had a feeling it was Lisa who was the "greedy bitch" that held up the Facts Of Life reboot. Mindy didn't say who it was by name.

From a UK perspective: Bruce Willis was bad enough but the top two singles in the UK in 1987 were Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship. I had absolutely no idea what was going in the minds of UK pop fans. Still don't, to be honest.
I can't speak for the UK as a whole, but rest assured, some of us were scratching our heads over Bruce Willis. The one I had to endure was under the boardwalk, shocking.
I remember Bruce Willis album and singles being huge here in England. His TV series with Cybil Shepherd " Moonlighting" was also a mega hit here in UK.

One thing: before Don Johnson was an actor, he was ACTUALLY a musician. Look at the writing credits for The Allman Brothers album, “Enlightened Rouges”, specifically the song, “Can’t Take It With You”, co-written with Dickey Betts

If you please, I highly recommend you review an album by Local H. All their albums are great, but I'd say "pack up the cats", "whatever happened to pj soles?" Their latest album is called "Lifers". Fun fact about these guys, they are the first rock duo. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. Hope you choose to review
Wait. You talk about Don's album, but didn't mention the Philip Michael Thomas album called Living The Book Of My Life (1985) As to a Canadian view on Bruce. That would explain why there are so many copies of his album in the dollar bin. But I would bet there was a lot of cocaine and payola involved with polishing that turd into gold. Or platinum.
I forgot Don Estelle had a sad ending from number one single 7 years later I saw him in Kingston standing on a box ( he was very short about 5’) singing ballads with a tin for people to put money in …. I gave him a few pounds for old times sake
Dickey Betts was a good friend of Don Johnson and even had his name mentioned in one of the episodes, which was a pretty funny scene. I really like the song Heartbeat and he actually has a great voice. Willy Nelson was also on an episode of Miami Vice, so there is more than just slapping things together, there is a history behind it, I guess you haven't seen the Miami Vice episode with Bruce Willis either. I've seen videos of Lenny and Squiggy on CZcams and I found them quite funny. The 1970s was the first throwback to the 50s. Go Lisa Whelchel! She's from Texas.
Dont' agree with you on most of this, especially Bad 4 Good, but hey, that's cool - different' strokes for different folks, as they say. Me, I've collected actors who sing for years and love it all, even dreadful stuff like Scott Baio ::shudder::...:-) Fun piece, dude!
How about Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen (The Donna Reed Show), Richard Chamberlin (Dr. Kildare) and Vince Edwards (Ben Casey)? And maybe Rick Nelson since he started out on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet?
In the 80s I was up on music even though I was youngish but never heard Bruce Willis sing Respect Yourself let alone see the video. I am now scared after hearing and seeing it. What makes it worse is being familiar with The Staple Singers version and the meaning behind it...what disgrace and Mr. Willis should be ashamed and embarrassed for this whole record! My poor ears.
It seems like there was a stretch from the 60s thru the early 80s where upcoming TV and movie stars had to release a record. Most of them shouldn’t have! Only rarely did any of these records chart, and never very high. I think of all the records released by TV stars, David Soul probably did the best as a serious artist. Most of the others fell flat, and degrees of cringe were added with time.
I just donated a copy of that Lisa Whelchel record lol Hugh Laurie (House, M.D.) is actually a good musician. I’d actually love to find a copy of his ‘Let them talk’ LP.
Impressive listing of some early ‘70s Burt Reynolds movies, all of which I saw with my family at various local drive-ins. Unfortunately, in ‘82 Burt had a country semi-hit single “Let’s Do Something Cheap and Superficial” for the execrable “Smokey and the Bandit 2”. Good to know while the movie quality went downhill over that decade, the music stayed the same.
Check out the third, yes THIRD Brady Bunch album, “Phonographic Album” they do TWO songs from Charlottes Web alongside a cover of Summer Breeze! Bruce Willis did a follow up album after that first one. I have both of them, haven’t listened to either in eons. If you liked that Lenny And Squiggy album, look for the Laverne And Shirley album, “Laverne And Shirley Sing”. It’s covers of songs from the 50’s/60’s. Sadly I have most of these albums you showed. Don’t have that Lisa Hartman album, but I may have to look for it. What’s that they say about judging an album by its cover?? 😜
No Telly Savalas? I have a country album by Steelers qb Terry Bradshaw. I've seen a all in the family album in budget bins. Joe pesci did a cd where he was singing about a 16 year old girl. Got alot of flack for and then he pretty much disappeared after that. The Shatner songs are classic. Cosby did an album too. No Muppet albums?😂
I never understood the whole Bruce Willis mania we had to put up with in the 80s.......and i'm sure even The Chipmunks could have done a better version of Under The Boardwalk, in fact that is where they should bury this album.
Regarding Don Johnson, i used to have that "Heartbeat" album on vinyl, to be honest, it was OK, not great, but not carcrash bad either, yes it was cliched to hell, but not totally terrible, it was 80s produced no question...and the 2nd single "Heartache Away" was a better song than "Heartbeat", yet only hit #56 on the Hot 100...2nd album "Let It Roll" was a bomb despite then-girlfriend Barbra Streisand singing harmony on a song on it...they did a duet on one of her albums & was a #25 single, so not a 1-hit wonder...and speaking of Miami Vice, you do know that his costar Philip Michael Thomas made a record (on an Atlantic Records label) & Don's records were better than any of David Hasselhoff's records, which were huge smashes...in Germany!!
“Nature Boy” is a famous song (if you didn’t know that already) and a big hit first recorded by Nat “King” Cole. It was written by a member of a proto-hippie movement. Doesn’t make Nimoy’s version any better of course.
After watching this I was reminded me of a terrible tv show tie in and its actually one of my favorite old sitcoms…. The Odd Couple. Jack Klugman and Tony Randell recorded an in character lp of music which actually had nothing to do with the show. Not only that but it’s easily one of the worst things Ive ever heard. Its so bad its hard to put into words. It’s one of my favorite shows but that lp should be tracked down wherever it lurks and destroyed to protect mankind. I encourage anyone who doesn’t believe me to have a listen. It will make the Return of Bruno sound like Dark Side of the Moon.
Leonard Nimoy - OK - not bad - I don't know any way to say this - he sounds real - not show biz - not forced Mr. Spock's Music From, outer Space Album and Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy

You missed Lorne Greene and Goldie Hawn or Tim Curry..lol
That Bad4Good fold-out poster is disturbing in a Blind Faith album cover sort of way.
Exactly
Lynda Carter was my first crush! as a kid before I knew I was...well, you know.
Wait. You talk about Don's album, but didn't mention the Philip Michael Thomas album called Living The Book Of My Life (1985)
As to a Canadian view on Bruce. That would explain why there are so many copies of his album in the dollar bin. But I would bet there was a lot of cocaine and payola involved with polishing that turd into gold. Or platinum.
The Don Johnson album actually had a big hit single and a min-movie promotion. I never knew anything about the Philip Michael Thomas album.
I forgot Don Estelle had a sad ending from number one single 7 years later I saw him in Kingston standing on a box ( he was very short about 5’) singing ballads with a tin for people to put money in …. I gave him a few pounds for old times sake
Can't say as I have any of these records, but heck, there's a lot of stuff I don't have.
To be fair, Nick Cage's version of Elvis' "Love Me" on the Wild At Heart soundtrack is surprisingly good.
He hungout with Glenn frey as well.
I never watched Miami Vice.
@@RobertFithen There's a pretty good list of musicians that have been on that show.
I love cliches 😊
I had the OTHER Leonard Nimoy LP
The UK version of the Lynda Carter album is very rare, and not cheap.
My fave is Bill Cosby - "hooray for the salvation army band". It's an awesome album, he is backed by the 103rd Street Band.
I had no idea that was the Watts 103rd Street Band.
You can come to my house and do an hour long flip video on records by stars.
How about Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen (The Donna Reed Show), Richard Chamberlin (Dr. Kildare) and Vince Edwards (Ben Casey)? And maybe Rick Nelson since he started out on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet?
Invariably great presentations, thank you, where'd you get the great shirt? Had you seen Don Johnson in the movie "Zachariah"?
It's been years since I've seen "Zachariah".. The Electric Western, but I still have the soundtrack.
"Disgrace". Perfect description.
Most of the others fell flat, and degrees of cringe were added with time.
nice to see your feeling better , love the tee shirt , why did some of TV Stars they could sing ? or just a money grab LOL
I just donated a copy of that Lisa Whelchel record lol
Hugh Laurie (House, M.D.) is actually a good musician. I’d actually love to find a copy of his ‘Let them talk’ LP.
Telly Savalas. "Stavros!!!"
Leonard Nimoy looks more like Leonard Cohen on that album cover
Impressive listing of some early ‘70s Burt Reynolds movies, all of which I saw with my family at various local drive-ins. Unfortunately, in ‘82 Burt had a country semi-hit single “Let’s Do Something Cheap and Superficial” for the execrable “Smokey and the Bandit 2”. Good to know while the movie quality went downhill over that decade, the music stayed the same.
Smokey and the Bandit 2 was a masterpiece compared to Smokey and the Bandit 3! ;-)
I remember that song. He also sang a song in "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" but it was cut from the movie.
I remember that Don Johnson got a ton of airplay... too much airplay.
I have the album I Hate Men by Nancy Walker. Wasn’t she Rhoda’s mother? Why do I know this?
I know her mostly from the paper towel commercials.
Gotta be some david hasselhoff albums somewhere. Dont hassel the hoff!
His music career is apparently huge in Germany.
The Lisa Hartman album is better than the Bruce Willis or Brady Bunch ones.
There are two reasons why I prefer the UK 🇬🇧 cover of the Lynda Carter album.
Cosby did a few albums. I heard one a long time ago. Pretty unremarkable. That Terry Bradshaw album isn't that bad surprisingly.
I never understood the whole Bruce Willis mania we had to put up with in the 80s.......and i'm sure even The Chipmunks could have done a better version of Under The Boardwalk, in fact that is where they should bury this album.
I remember Bruno. There was a film for it. One where he was playing at woodstock. It was terrible.
Woodstock? That sounds ridiculous. Lol
I buy stars records for their novelty. Love the Blues Brothers. Friends and I loved the movie.
Had the 8 track tape of them. Dumb teens.
I'll have to check it out now.
@@RobertFithen im sure you won’t be disappointed.
You forgot Rick Springfield
Rick Springfield is a real musician. He was in a band and had records before General Hospital.
Video was already too long plus Rock Springfield was already a charting singer years before he was a TV actor.
You should hear the 2 albums Telly Savalas released. Yikes.
I've only heard about them. More talk-singing from what I've heard.
I didn't know Lyda Carter's name was spelled with a Y.
You still need an N ..
Your videos actually end? Who knew?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Leonard Nimoy - OK - not bad - I don't know any way to say this - he sounds real - not show biz - not forced
Mr. Spock's Music From, outer Space Album
and
Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy
I bet the space album is better than this one.
@@RobertFithen Personally - it is just different - it is more of a novelty album though
Leonard Nimoy albums don't make you want to rip them off the turntable onto the trash can.
keep up the good work - thankyou
