    Seems like the delamination of the voice coil was manufacturing error. I bottomed out my sa12 rev 3 pretty bad on first install due to it being wired lower than I assumed. Instead of 700 watts at 4ohm it was getting 1800 at 1 ohm 😬. That being said, after bottoming it out a few more times in other instances it still performs flawlessly with no signs of catastrophic failure.
    Thanks for your videos. The information you put out is priceless.

    I've had both, sa 12s and evl 15s. Had 3 sa 12s and 4 evl 15s. Im currently running 2 evl 15s on a taramps bass 5k @ 0.5ohm.. I play them down to 7hz.. ihad the 3 sa 12s at 0.67. The evls hit hard af! The sa to though.. but to be honest id stick with my evls. I put the 3 sa's on my 5k an they took em like a champ. They were the classics to the 750wrms..

    Yea I think your right, you knocked the coil loose during the free air test.. I'm not a big fan of the FULL rms free air, I would like to see it done at a lower rms. Put your self in there shoes. say you BudgetBassHead make a 12'' woofer and all your countless hrs of testing to make a good sub are complete and your proud of what you made cuz your a good guy and along comes me and I free air it at just above rms and do a sweep and knock the coil loos.. Is that fair to you? You didn't make a "free air sub" you made a sub to be ran in a box. Keep up the great content !!

    Well u put full rms to it free air- of course it bottomed out and trashed the coil. Same thing probly gonna happen to those 8s in a prefab box for 12s. Maybe build sealed boxes for each sub size for testing purposes. I think you will get more consistent test results and less likely to damage them during testing. Great vids!

      Running Any ( Brand ) Sub In Free Air Status At Or Even Somewhat Close To (Under Or Above) The Rated RMS Power Handling,, Is Risky And Especially When They're New And Not Broken In.. I Will Say The Sundown SA Should Have Handled The Power @ 800 Watts As Long As It Was Good Clean Power And It's Very Possible, The Sub Had A Weak Spot In The Voice Coil Windings From The Factory.. Any Brand Can Make Mistakes During The Manufacturing Process And After Installation In System Builds But I Only Get Concerned With,,, And Stay Away From Subs That Have Bad Reputations For Failures And Problems... I Don't Use Sundown Equipment And I Prefer Crossfire Audio But I Will Say, Sundown Audio Is Damn Good Stuff With A Great Reputation For Quality And Their Equipment Is Always Underrated For Power Handling And Output.. Understandably The Company Wouldn't Have To Replace That Sub But I Wouldn't Be Surprised, If They Went Ahead And Replaced It, Even If You Let Them Know How You Tested It Because It Wasn't A Deliberate Test By You To Tear It Up Because You Did Pay Good Money For It And That Put You Put Of The Sub And The Money It Cost.. Your Videos Are Definitely Great Content And I Look Forward To Them 👍💪

Anyways got to work and look back and its smoking all to hell. And started making all this static noise thru the sub. Yes I was slumpn pretty good. Was I clipping no. Havent done anything but pulled subs out think I know which one but its hard to tell. It wasn't as much smoke as yours. But pretty sure its hurt. The one coincidence I can see here.... Audiopipe amp. I have apcl 3000d. I need to do some testing but one thing i noticed not sure if it was after or had anything to do with it, but my remote plug was not quite all the way in plus the bass knob dial is pretty fd up like sometimes hard to turn sometimes soft. The bass knob only controls to the limits of the gain set on the amp so if you gain is set to halfway when you go to that bass knob and you max it out it's not going to go any louder than the gain on the amp so it's basically just to turn off all of your bass real quick if you don't want it to hit for a minute while you tune and things messing with things doing demos whatever the case may be when you just want to turn all the bass off real quick use knobb, therefore the game will only max out on your base knob to the point that it's maxed out on the setting on the actual amplifier You can't use the knob from go to go from 0 to 100 on the DB setting on your amp it will only allow you to approach where the gain is actually set on the amp but it will let you take the base away so you can't go above the setting on the amp with the base knob but you can go below and have no base all very minor amount

    I have had a couple sets of S.A. series subs before and I have never had an trouble out of them. I have seen a few different videos u have made and I'm wondering if ur tests are truly unbiased. It seems like u lean towards skar audio in a lot of situations. I can't say one way or the other honestly that's just how it seems watching ur videos. I have put well over double the rms rating to the S.A. subs on clean power with out any trouble at all. U could have gotten a bad subs also. I don't know all the variables in ur tests ofcourse because I didn't actually do the testing myself. I do appreciate the work and effort u put into these videos but I am very interested in knowing how u blew that S.A. sub. It has me baffled. I have seen others put 3 to 4 times the power to them then what they are rated for and not blown them. I prefer EMF audio over sundown, the banhammer's an amazing subwoofer 4 inch coil 3k rms currently 390.00 dollars (15"). Ok. So you had 40 volts at your meter and ran that Sundown at that voltage? That means you gave that Sundown sub 1600 watts of power which is way over the 800 you said you were giving it. I say redo the test and run the correct voltage. For 800 watts at the amp, the voltage should be 28.28. Remember to get the correct power output in voltage, you take the max power of 800 and you square root that number.
    When you did 40 volt setting, that is 40x40=1600 watts.
    28.28x28.28=799.758 watts.
