    Just to let you know. I am living in Finland. I had this surgery 2two weeks ago (patellar tendon full repair). I had plaster for two weeks. Now I have orthosis with 0-30° of flexion for 2 weeks. Then 0-60° for 2 weeks. Then 0-90° for the last 2 weeks.

    Great watching the video am at week 7 after surgery & am weight bearing but knee movement not great so the video has helped me realise it’s long road to recovery & not to try overdo it

    Have just ruptured right quad tendon, did the left 5 years ago. Surgery both times, was out of brace completely 8 weeks in and walking unaided 4 weeks later. Aiming for the same as right one wasn’t completely off. Lots of therapy including pool work, and you’ll get there. And, I am a Sports Therapist of over 25 years, so that did help👍

    I ruptured both after a fall in the garden and am at week 5 exactly. Just set the brace to 90 deg flexion. I can weight bare well in the brace.

    My knee was twisted as it impacted the floor. I fell so strangely and I heard a loud pop. 😢 I had to be taken in an ambulance to the hospital.
    History was quad tendon tears while trying to use the clutch in a semi. It was very stiff and I needed to use a knee brace to finish that driving school. I got my cdl but never did physical therapy. I went on to drive otr and that knee had issues since. That was 6 years ago.
    This fall was last week. I'm home on leave from work waiting on my first ortho appointment. 🫤
    It feels shifty in the mobilizer.
    The xray report said something along the lines of ossicle in quadriceps tendon stable and compatible with remote trauma or enth... something. The ER doc thinks it's a meniscus tear.
    I've got the swelling down and keeping it elevated. Taking naproxen and iced it. It's so weak and I can't bend it even a little without using my hands. Kinda worried. 😔

    Love that you’ve covered this. I sustained this injury 5 years ago in gymnastics; very correct that the road to recovery is quite long, but full recovery is absolutely possible. Great video as always!

      How long did it take you to recover please stairs are so hard for me and 5 months post op straight leg raises hurt so much

      Hi mate, 5 months still with difficulty is honestly no surprise; I believe I was still in a brace at 5months post-op. It is a long road and everyone’s recovery pathway is very different as it is a big injury. You will find your recovery goes through random jumps, then plateaus and occasionally there will be setbacks.
      Be patient, stick to your rehab and make sure you are working with a good physiotherapist. Best of luck!

    What a great fascinating video !!!! Strikes me as being very interesting you mention the vast majority of cases will need surgery ..I suffered a partial patellar tendon tear 2 weeks ago with absolutely no mention whatsoever of surgery just put in a brace for 6 weeks with leg straight....I was just rushed out the door !!!!I took a screenshot of the report which said ..distal patellar tendon tear measuring 2.5 cm in max craniocaudal diameter ...
    Prob should get a 2nd opinion ....

      @@thethirstyscholar1 thanks for the well wishes!!!!never got a second opinion but it's massively improved.i lost a lot of power and muscle mass in my leg as a result of being in a cast for 8 weeks ,
      I hope the tear you have is small and heals with no fuss !!!

    I had a large pop occur and then there was a large indentation below the kneecap, right where the patellar tendon would be. No pain though, weirdly. Just stiffness and tender, can it be a partial tear requiring no operation, just rest and then re-strengthening?

    Thank you for putting this into an understandable video. I am 8 weeks into recovery, some days good, some not so good. I had the "Pop", the void above the knee, no control of the lower leg at all. Therapy, therapy, therapy. lol😊

    Hi, I completely tore my left patella tendon on 25th April 2024 -- whilst trying to jump and grab a 12ft wall on an obstacle course. I'm in a knee brace set at 30 degrees flexion. I've been doing some physio exercises and I can do side and rear leg raises fine, but the normal straight raise I cannot get it to lift (very frustrating). I can feel my quad trying to lift it, but from my knee down it refuses to activate. Do you have any tips/guidance for this? Also today is 3 weeks and 4 days since my Op, I can slowly move around without crutches but should I be further ahead in recovery by now? Thanks. Byron

    I ruptured my quad tendons in January. due to complication, a bleed resulting in surgery to remove a haematoma I only started physio and hydrotherapy in May. I have approx 75 - 80 degrees of flex. half way through my hydrotherapy the consultant wants me to go back in to surgery for MUA and six days on a CPM machine.
    I sort a second opinion and was told not to go down that path, It is a long process requiring quality physio.
    Very confusing and difficult to decide

    Is there a way of differentiating between quad and patellar tendon? Or do we just explain to the patient either of those?

      Yes mainly location of pain… more proximal = quads, patella and distal to this more likely to be patella

    I ruptured my patellar tendon while just running down the basketball court. I believe my tendon had to have been weak due to sports. Interestingly enough, after my first surgery, there was still a tear in my patellar tendon that required a second surgery. Recovery has been rough and being at 38, I'm not sure I'll ever be the same. I hope everyone has better luck than me.

      My husband is 53 he did both his completely off the bone fell at work I do believe his tendons could of been weak he is on statins too . I said they can waeken your body .

      I tore mine 20 months ago when i was-50. It’s been rough. My right quad is still a little smaller than my left and it’s hard getting used to different shape post op but I’m doing much better now. You really have to rehab like your life depends on it.

      I did the same thing playing basketball (at 43). It’s been a couple years and still not the same. Some atrophy is there and weakness along with balance issues. Trying to work it back to what looks to be a new normal

    I am now 4 months post op, around 100 degrees' bend. getting around without crutches, but knee swells up and gets very hot after exercise, also my calf swells when sitting, so a little worried. Can anyone tell me if this normal ?.

      I’m not that worried, well I’m starting to think it’s runners knee I’ve been told it can radiate around the knee cap and I’ve also been told it can sometimes be tricky to heal…

    I would bet that being on testosterone for the last 8 years contributed to tearing my quad tendon recently. I'm not a big framed guy, but I can throw a heavy barbell around easily. I was doing front squats with 225 pounds a few years back and injured my lower quad near the patella area. I think I partially tore it then and wore it down doing heavy squat cleans for the last 4 years. Finally... POP! And here I am recovering from surgery, probably never doing an Olympic lift again. I'm 57, btw

    Well I just did a bi lateral patella rupture as well as bi lateral quad rupture. I've been in bed for 7 weeks 24/7 I'm not allowed to stand or bend knees. Doctor said he hasn't seen anything like what I did in his 34 years as a surgeon.

      Funny you say that, I’ve got exactly the same injury injury only I’ve got multiple fractures within the partella itself aswell. Doctors told me the same thing, and asked if they could document my case as it was so unique. How’s your recovery going?

      I have a patellar tendon tear and quadricep tear as well, not completely torn, haven't walked in months without crutches.

    My husband has snapped both quadriceps tendons both completely off the bone 2 months in still has his braces on and 90 degree movement it's going to be a long recovery 😢

      If it there is a FULL rupture (completely severed) then no, the body will not be able to restore this

      @@tarot.energymy understanding is that since it is connected to the quad tendon the patella is pull up when rupture occurs and too far away from the rest of the tendon to attach by itself

    It happened to my neighbor. A patella tendon rupture. He just had surgery. I feel sorry for him. He was running in the mountains as a vacation when it happened. I don't think his extreme activities are worth the risks.

    Well you possibly have been stalking me haha im 60 and I skid off stairs i knew right then my kegs wouldbt move. Ive never felt pain, even close to what Icfelt during that fall

      I finally started therapy a bit late. 2 visits in my legs starts swelling like a balloon . Therapist says it's probably fluid from finally using leg. The mire I stood the harder it got to breathe. I went to E.R to find out I have a blood clot in my groin going down my thigh. I also have 2 clots in each lung. That's what 60 days in bed does I guess lol. I have to stop therapy and take it easy . I can walk with walker and walk in pool. I did 5 days in hospital on I.V. blood thinners. I'm home now on oral thinners. They said uts going to be a long time for clots to dissolve. When it rains it pours lol. Keep posting your progress . I want to keep reading your progress. You are on a mission to get healthy no doubt. Your posts allow the crest of us a chance to see what we might have coming our way lol.

      @@MiamiMike638the doctor told me to keep walking around and weight bearing on my bad knee which I’m glad he did (2 month old at home aswell as running my business I didn’t really have a choice) I’ve been averaging 6000 steps a day with my leg in a Zimmer splint. Although there has been pain I believe using it so much has helped promote blood flow and has helped it heal faster. Aswell as minimising the chances of blood clots. With these types of injuries a lack of blood flow to the patella post injury can prove quite problematic I hear

    It's incorrect to say anabolic steroids make tendons weaker by altering the makeup of the tendon. Many anabolic steroids actually promote greater collagen synthesis and can actually improve the capacity of tendons. The problem arrises due to steroids tendency to promote significant gains in muscle strength much faster than their respective tendons can keep up, since connective tissue adapts (both positively and negatively) much more slowly than muscle tissue. Without the awareness of that and the discipline to adapt their training appropriately, it's a recipe for disaster for many steroid users.
