Process of a Pastel portrait, Big size portrait

I wanted to come back with a very special portrait..And having something good to show. To paint this portrait was very intense and emotional for me and it came to me very quickly. Giving freedom to my emotions expressed through the colors and strokes. This is a portrait of a young gifted craft-man who passed away recently...The portrait was commissioned by his mother...
For this work I have used mostly Unison Soft Pastels on dark grey Canson paper, the biggest size available, 29 x 43 inches. Big sizes allows me to be more expressive, something I felt necessary in this case.

What you did here isn’t only a portrait but you’ve brought back to life one of the most important people in the world of a mother who lost her precious child. That’s simply wonderful, she must have absolutely loved this! So good of you to put this much feeling into you’re portraits.

I do understand about portraits coming quick but honestly, I try and I learn, struggle, win some lose others, but the way you master this craft must be a gift from God. I just never will be this good. You are an amazing artist. I was born with a burning desire to do what you do but it never is this easy. God bless and keep you theres no doubt you have a responsibility to record life as you see it.

Beautiful job but I wish some of these painters would name the colors they used and why they used them so we can learn from them.
Do you see those marks on the side of the painting? She's figuring it out for herself. Art isn't paint by numbers. It is practicing and using your eyes, testing your materials, to find the right colors.
@@mercster Hello Mercster, This is absolutely correct. I use a lot of different colors and sometimes I am not really sure which one I need to apply, so I test them on the side of the painting... Thank you for following! Graciela.
@@bograart No problem! Great painting. I'm a beginner, i mostly use soft pastels.
There are so many pastels in a box that naming them all would make a video like this hours long and most of us would switch off. Besides the name of the pastel varies depending who the manufacturer is. Just enjoy the process. Colours really don’t mean much, some deliberately use colours that clash for effect. It’s a great video, just wish mine were 1% as good. Thanks GB for you efforts. Now it will take some time to clean your hands and the floor. A good painting like this paints itself.

Wow, that was so incredible to watch...mesmerizing. You are a true master, to watch you draw him so realistically, even before you painted, wow! Then you showed us more magic, using pastels to create, what emotion! Your obvious confidence, your strong, unhesitating strokes with your pastels... Fabulous! I subscribed to your channel on the spot. Now I'm going to watch whatever other videos you've already put up, hopefully I might pick up a tip or two lol. I have pastels but have been a too intimidated to use them so I'm just practicing drawing with graphite pencil. I would just like to add...What an amazing tribute!! Don´t be intimidate by using your Pastels, on the contrary...Enjoy to play with your colours. Do not be afraid to break them neither! They are made to be used, think about them as a colours in your pallet that can be mixed, smashed or erased if you want to...Just keep drawing but with colours. I am sure you will find your own way to express yourself!
You are doing right by practicing drawing since drawing is the base for painting in Pastel technique.

This is a beautiful portrait. The key, not withstanding the emotional connection, seems to be the accurate sketch at the beginning, the charcoal outline. For me, that would've been job done, but you took it to a whole other level. It's an amazing study in pastel.

I'm in awe of your technique and the consistent results you get with your portraiture. Can you please please please do a tour of your studio? I would so love to see the actual pastels you use and hear of any hints and techniques that you would recommend. I'd love to see how you organise your paper and art works and how you organise and store all of your pastels. What are you are your favourite brands? And what are your favourite colours to use? Do you choose a small amount of pastels before each painting, or do you lay them all out in front of you so you have full access of your supplies? Many questions !!!

Amazing as always. I loved the slowed down style of this video because every move you make just looks so powerful. Soft pastels really are a wonderful medium and I think you are by far the best in painting portraits with them :)
