      Largely very good interpretations, but I do think his No. 15 is a little too fast and showy for what the piece actually is, although still a technical marvel. I may just be jealous, though.

    I've been practicing the Glass Piano Etudes for a couple months now, and while No. 5 is probably the simplest (and slowest) from a purely structural point of view, it really requires a deft ear and hand to bring out the full emotional resonance of this piece. Some of the "harder" etudes are actually easier to make sound good once you get the technical nitty-gritty out of the way, but with this one, there is complete transparency between performer and listener since the music is just so direct. I applaud this performance, especially the restraint to keep the tempo so rubato. I find the inclination to speed up a little over time hard to resist.

    • @wzdavi
      @wzdavi Před 3 lety +10

      I totally agree. The trick in this piece, is too bring out the emotion in this etude. Technical skills aren't too challenging, pulling out the mood of the piece is the hard part.

    At first this video popped up, I was like, who is this guy, bad composure playing the piano sticking his neck out, he is out to get himself some spinal pain in the neck, and what is wrong with the music, why is it so slow and not changing, but as soon as his right hand hit the fist note, suddenly I was dragged into this psychedelic outta space, or feeling stuck in time or something, I found myself kept listening after several minutes, and obsessively searching for Philip Glass in the next few days, and buying his etude book, and begging to play his piece, and sharing his Video. That is what a thoughtful stable as-if digitally composed multi-tracked music which fully displacing acoustic music instrument’s flavor can do to modern listeners .

Andante, and that makes my day.

      This reminds me of the opening to a Quantic Dream title (Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human), and all of the depth of sadness that you're about to embark on. The stark simplicity and resonance between pauses and the last key played, that just brings this - melancholy to the track, that really makes it feel grounded and depressing in a grey-skied world. I love it though. It *really speaks to me.

    Glass finds harmonies, sometimes even in just intervals, that seem hidden from access to the average mortal. Then he assembles them in metrical scaffolding that might be called non-Euclidean. It's about as "Road Not Taken" as possible from the would-be ascendant to the throne: dodecaphonic composition. (That king died before his gluteus could maximus.)
