  • **Open for Awesomeness** When you hair is transitioning from constant heat styling to your natural waves/curls it can be very very hard to get your curls to clump together. These are all my tips and tricks for really enhancing clumps! And this is all done with upright styling techniques!!! Keep in mind that really really big curl clumps can weigh down your hair and make your curl pattern appear straighter. But knowing these tips can help you get bigger clumps and then you have more control over how big your curl clumps are.

    The timing of this video was perfect! 😊
    I have been on my wavy journey since March of this year and I've got long, dryer (colored) hair and I watched one of your other recent right side up styling since you've been expecting 🥰 and it did help, but the detail of this one has been super helpful!! I've been doing upside down styling in the shower and actually using those stylers haha but the results are best when I just put it in a bun and let it air dry, for forever, and have been thinking of investing in a diffuser before winter!
    I have had a lot of tiny knots from trying to brush away from my face upside down and applying the products and then waiting for the scrunch out the crunch part hoping it doesn't look like a mess when i did all the styling upside down 😂 I've been needing this upright video! Thank you so much for sharing!

  • @journalersketcher
    @journalersketcher Před 2 lety +2

    Courtney, you lucky woman. Even though I have coarsish hair, doing the amount of scrunching you do will absolutely kill any waves I get and no styling product will bring them back.

    • @SwavyCurlyCourtney
      @SwavyCurlyCourtney  Před 2 lety +1

      Maybe try adding more water? Normally, I do this upside down and have a video on this as well. BUT that being said, do what works for you!

    • @journalersketcher
      @journalersketcher Před 2 lety +1

      @@SwavyCurlyCourtney Thank you. I actually do (at the end of my shower I probably spend 5 minutes adding waves to my hair). Still, more than 1-2 scrunches kills any/all of my 2a/2b waves (except the rebellious 2c face-framing clump on the left side that starts behaving like the rest of my hair when it's below my shoulders). I found that I get the best/most beautiful (get the most compliments hair) when I fully rinse out my conditioner and don't use any product. Granted, waves last no more than 2 days but by day 3 post wash my scalp starts wanting to be brushed and I oblige.

    Courtney, I'll be honest and tell you I took a break from your channel a while back because I didn't feel I was getting any new info. I recently re- subbed and this video has been a game changer for me. I thank you! The upside down technique was all I had been doing because who doesn't like more volume on top?! But after watching this, the very next wash day I did the right side up technique you shared and holy moley did my hair love it! Better clumps, better curls! I'm so grateful and will never unsub again! Some times a little change makes a big difference!

      This really helps me as I'm disabled with a myriad of congenital diseases n deformities inside my body. 5 major surgeries in the past 3-4 years. This is so helpful for me! I love styling upside down too but knowing i can get fabulous hair styling upright is AWESOME! n I'm a micro-ploppin' Queen! T shirts only but I'm hoping to get a microfiber towel when I have more funds to throw at my hair! Till then, I'm learning a lit working with what i got. I hover diffuse then pixie diffuse all on low n cool. I do 20 seconds each section! On n off. As long as I'm careful n don't touch my hair too much while diffusing, it works well for me for now. Always experimenting with different techniques n products though. Loving every minute of it! Oh! N sleeping in my satin bonnet changed my curl game too! I'm resting on my recliner a lot of the day so the bonnet or satin/ silk throw over the back of my recliner really protects my hair n style!

    I usually do upright styling & brush everything back, too, I just haven't thought about squishing the products in. Thank you, Courtney! The way I dry my hair to get volume & more curl definition, is sort of pixie diffusing & I find it helps with the drying time. I let the long prongs of the diffuser bowl do the work. After placing a section of hair in the diffuser, I give it a little twist & bring it up & instead of placing the prongs of the diffuser directly on my head, I'll just tilt the top of the diffuser towards my head, while having the bottom of it touching my head. I'll even pull the diffuser away from my head, too.

    You mentioned Styling Snot Gel in another video and I was intrigued by the name. I found it on Amazon and was even more intrigued by the price. I bought it and I freaking LOVE it. I don't know what will happen when the dew point changes, but for now, it is my absolute go to. I get a cast faster and better than any other product. Thank you for sharing that tidbit!
    I'll try brushing my hair back and some of the other things you've mentioned here. I go back and forth between you and Manes by Mell. I do brush the gel in, but I have found that the methods used by Mell don't work for me. Like I said, I go back and forth, I try (with success and failure), I adopt and adapt. I've learned so much from both of you.
    Thank you for all that you do!

    I switched to upright styling in the last couple of months and it's helped me so much! I no longer have weird parts in my hair (especially in the crown area). Probably the only thing I do differently than you are doing is that I do flip my head upside down to diffuse. As long as I comb my hair straight back while I'm in the shower before adding my products, I will still get that volume. Like you, I flip my hair upside down to root fluff... I'll do it several times in a row, like a hard rocker. LOL

I've been trying bending over slightly at the waist so my head is facing the water stream and it hits direct onto the top and sides of my hair without killing my back lol. And I JUST got upside-down styling to work! Lol, I will give it a try next wash day. I think the combing everything forward is what got rid of my crop circle (plus trimming out my copious layers that one blog said caused stringy curls). Maybe it's the combing or brushing straight forward or back that fixes that problem. I will report back. 🥰

    I began my wavy hair journey some weeks ago and I'm looking forward to trying all these different techniques :D. I tried styling my hair upside down and while the first time was great, I hadn't volume at the base at all, and my hair is not fine. Today is my wash day, I will definitely try this method, so much easier for a lazy person like me. Also the amount of products you used is not a lot, and for people who don't have all these curly hair products yet is amazing. I have curtain bangs so I will be using the finger method to style those

    I wish I could have seen the full drying technique, because I was very surprised your hair went from being smoothed back to your normal, easy to flip waves. I have to “organize” my clumps w a wet brush in the way I want it to dry on my head when it’s dry…I can’t upside down style, that’s never worked for me and I get some movement like 5%, from up right styling but def not from smoothed back wet to dry waves that can flip across the center part…that was magical how you got that to happen 🙃

    Hey Courtney. I can't believe it has been 6 months already! You look so good and I hope you have been feeling good as well. I switched to micro-plopping a while ago as I found it worked much better for me and just recently started trying upright styling due to lifelong back problems. This video was well timed. Both ION and Shark have come out with similar priced Dyson dupe hair dryers so I was wondering what they were like. Still quite pricey but half of the Dyson. You will have to let us know what you think.

I just used the Cantu shampoo for the first time today but used a different conditioner because I noticed the cantu conditioner is not curly girl approved so I didn’t buy it. So excited for right side up! Brushes can do ok for me, but my biggest frustration with volume is my hair grows from the top of my head straight forward! so upside down styling looks great from the clumping perspective but it always sticks flat to my head in the weirdest way. I have good news for you then. I ran this on one side and my Dyson on the other. The Shark side was noticeably less frizzy and more defined. I think it could be the diffuser shape. You're the only person who says to apply conditioner with soaking wet hair. I cannot do it. My hair gets zero conditioner when I do. So, I have to squeeze out almost all the water then apply the conditioner and add water to move it around. Maybe once my hair isn't so dry I won't have to do it this way anymore

  • @ellenvanhetnederend831

    Hi I follow since June last year when I started the CG method. Now I do have a question about the Snot (in Dutch it means something you don't associate with hair). People say this is a very heavy gel. So I'm wondering if you also think it is heavy and your waves are going to hang down. I also have waves and not very thick hair. Good video about standing up styling.
