For any of y'all who are emulating Andy McKee's style, I knew him when he was still working and giving lessons in my home town and he played Guilds exclusively at that point because he said the relatively thicker solid wood tops, vs say a Taylor or other maker, stood up to his percussive expression. He also preferred the wider nut.

A guitarist friend in north Idaho was concerned that his Guild F50R was getting a bit worn, so he picked up another one a year ago. He and his wife tell the story that he called her at work, which never happens. On this rare occasion a month ago, he had to call as he found a 1976 Guild F50R. Very sweet to hear the sound on Sunday mornings of one of the three in rotation (or a Martin or a Taylor) (while working the tech desk at 1st Pres). 👍

I have a G-00 and the first model G-45. The player port on the G-00 is fantastic. It’s definitely a bonus to me… I prefer it.
Just picked up my Guild today..Waiting for it to acclimate. They both sounded great....They are different
i think that Gibson Walnut sounds like a brighter Martin D15, i like them each for each of their diffs, and yeah the Type of music you're playing and most importantly Your style of playing, is the starting point on looking for a sound'ing guitar. The journey's where it's at :)
Still love my Gibson’s…incredible guitars, a lot of clowns jumping on the hate Gibson bandwagon…there’s a reason most of the legendary guitarists/rock n roll songs have a Gibson as the main guitar…I agree that the management there as sucked the last 5 0r so yrs…getting better though…those guitars deserve the best
The Guild's Low E string was slightly sharp during the demo, so it makes it a bit harder to compare

The Guild F150ce with the solid block fretboard inlays are even better. I wish they still made the full F150R but they stopped that
between these two guitars i definitely like the sound of the Gibson better. It was warmer, but I am not a big fan of the Gibson G series. They seem overpriced for what you get. BTW I have a 1990 Martin J40 (J for Jumbo) and while it is definitely loud, when I record, it is perfect for fingerpicking. You don't hear much about them from the Martin line but the J40 is definitely an outstanding guitar!!!! I enjoy all of your comparison videos.

I sold my j200 and kept my guild D50 ,no comparison
They both have similar sounds but the Guild seems to be a little more touch responsive.
I'm very much looking forward to the podcast continuation of this topic, because I talk a lot of trash about Gibby. But its mostly aimed at issues of responsible wood sourcing, price, and lack of involvement with young artists. Chris made a lot of good points. I might just be mentally trapping the company in 2015. I'd love to have a better understanding of the corrective steps they've been taking, because I'll be quick to admit I did not notice, and I'm probably wrong for that
They also aren’t a great company to work for. Part of the reason quality is going down, is because they pay dirt wages in Bozeman (median single family home is $900k) so they struggle with retention. Just look at how many job openings they have now. With what they pay their workers, they could easily lower the price of their guitars.
I own a Guild F-150CE - a repaired job I bought from an eBay auction earlier this year. Got it cheap. I guess the glued top scared some people away. But it looks purdy, plays well and sounds great, acoustically. It did need a set up. The pre-amp is garbage; but I'll swap that out for a K&K pure mini pickup.
All acoustic guitar tops are glued anyways lol

Thanks for this video. They both sound good--just different. Cooper, I'm with you on the player port. I don't want the guitar sound coming up at me from there, especially if I'm singing and playing. It's a subconscious thing that a singer/guitarist will sing louder to get out in front of the guitar's volume--not necessarily what you want to do, depending on the song. The player port only makes this worse. For instrumental music, I guess the player port is okay, but no player port is okay by me too.
Both sound great, and I couldn't really pick one over the other simply by listening to these demos. The Gibsons definitely need some coloring/yellowing, whatever! Wahi' Valleys

I have a first generation G45, and, after playing one of the new G45s, I'm convinced that they are not the same and the original is better than the second generation.
I just bought a G-200 last Saturday. In my view, it’s the flattop for archtop players. It excels at Big Band/Swing rhythm chords and chord melody playing. Its depth is very similar to something like an L-5 or L-50; for that matter, of a Martin 000 or 0000/M. The extra bass resonance comes from the width, not from depth, again like an archtop or an 0000/M. And those are really the best comparators, not the J-200 or J-185.
I actually prefer the simple appointments of the Generation Collection and their equivalents in solid body electrics, the Tributes (I have a 2016 LP Tribute P90). But Gibson has a long history of making such instruments, going all the way back to the 1920s with the Junior line (and I have an A Jr. archtop mandolin and L Jr. archtop guitar), so it’s great to see them getting back to their roots in value priced, simply appointed instruments.
My hope is that they will apply this concept to archtop guitars again. Archtops don’t have to be blinged out $10K-plus instruments. Using the finish and materials of the Generation Collection should permit one in the $2,500 range, max, roughly the price of a J-45 Standard. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, but I definitely got my G-200 because it’s the closest thing to an L-7C, L-5C, Super 400C that Gibson currently makes, and I am definitely satisfied with my purchase.

06/24/2022: What is the difference in the quality and tone between the Guild D-150ce Guitar Westerly Collection Acoustic-Electric Guitar, and the same guitar made in China?

Yeah, i agree. I played the guild yesterday at the guitar store before watching this and it has that nice big round bassy jumbo sound just like the video.
What about the Epiphone Texan built in Bozeman?
I listened and could pick the Guild every time. It sounds better, better bass, to my ear than the G-200. I've tried several SJ-200s but haven't found a good sounding one with a comfortable neck. What's the Guild neck profile? Great comparison. Thanks
Got the f2512 and it’s just the best sounding! Guild really does a good job and I just ordered the f 240e to see what they can do for $300.
Gibson actually had a good G series a few years ago with the G45 and others that were affordable along with the fantastic J15 all solid wood with Walnut B&S with Sitka Spruce top.. They were on a good roll with those and decided to change it with the ported thing. It seems too gimmicky. AND they are now up higher priced and the Epiphones( love the Inspired by J200 with solid maple and solid spruce and still cheaper) are getting much better.even they are getting pricier as well. I would, in this realm, go with the Guild. The Gibson is alright. I would prefer the Guild in this instance.
Everyone hears things differently. I actually think the Gibson sounded great on every song and the Guild was great on the last blues piece. I will listen again and wait for a 000 15SM

guys i know I'm kinda off topic here, but I'm really torn between the Taylor Academy 12 and Gibson G-00 and looking for help. I value comfort very highly (small stature+hand injury) and I like fingerstyle most. Thank you to anyone that helps.

Luke, I started out with the Academy 12 (mahogany neck, and gave the 12e maple neck to my SIL, who likes the concert body as more comfortable and easier to play that he took his Breedlove Atlas dreadnought to the pawn shop since they're moving). Take a look at the Breedlove concert body, too. (B-stock demo Organic Concert E solid Torrefied European Spruce tops, African Mahogany back & sides ~$350-425). The two founders of Breedlove Guitars worked with Taylor Guitars, and the cross-pollination in the industry begat great products. As always, check out the manufacturers' web sites. (Disclaimer: I now have that Taylor 12, two Breedlove concerts. a Cole Clark Angel 2AC, an Ibanez AS73FM-TAF semihollow electric (lighter strings), and a baritone ukulele to maintain. It's always possible to find a deal...

Definite difference! The Gibson sounds way better to me, but to each their own.
The guild has more of a “lonely” sound to it

I am voting for the gibson.. Better balance IMHO. And that 1 and 3/4 nut width would be important to me.
I'm with Cooper. I gave the walnut Gibson J-15 a serious look, but I wouldn't give the G45 a second look. I'm perfectly content with what I hear when a guitar projects forward. I have no need for a player port and would be insulted if I had to pay extra to cover it up. For the record, I have always felt that acoustics with their electronic controls cut into the side are unsightly. That is utilitarian rather than aesthetic choice and not one I would ever make.
I play on stage, so choose “utilitarian” or “aesthetics” every time! Only what the guitar sounds like to the audience is important… I really don’t care what a guitar looks like. And, what is sounds like to me is not that important. For me, a guitar is a tool for a job. So, my #1 is a RainSong Jumbo with LR Baggs Stagepro Anthem, side mounted full EQ, mic/piezo blend and tuner, all instantly accessible / adjustable on the side of guitar. The sound hole mounted Anthem has no EQ, or phase switch, and you have to fish around in the sound hole to adjust mic/ piezo blend if you get feedback. Keep strummin’!
@@jed1166 Having those pickup controls in the soundhole is exactly the aesthetics over utility compromise I would be willing to make. Would you prefer to have the same pickup system with the controls mounted on the side so that you wouldn't have to "fish around in the sound hole?"
@@vocalion9519 the LR Baggs Stagepro Anthem that I do have in my RainSong is NOT the same as the LR Baggs sound hole Anthem. The soundhole Anthem has a mic / piezo blend knob and a volume knob, that’s it… My Stagepro has a volume slider, mic / piezo blend slider, a phase switch and notch filter to cut feedback, a chromatic tuner and a 2 band graphic equalizer. I am not a superstar, so when I am on stage, I don’t have a sound man sitting at a mixer… I am my sound man! And it is a lot easier and efficient for me to control most stuff at the guitar, rather than walk away from the mic, and go the board. So, I did choose the Stagepro version of the Anthem, and am glad I did!

These are both great guitars, but these old ears that have been exposed to a lot of noise on the job, seems to favor the Gibson.
I feel satin guitars sound great when you buy them, but then when they open up, many become just a mush of sound.
I like Guild, but I gravitate towards smaller body acosutics. Also disappointed to see it's made in China, which is a no-no for me right now.
I will put my taylor 414cer against these. Big money but worth it
Faith guitars make wonderful all solid wood Indonesian made guitars. Their Neptune & Jupiter bodies would be worth investigating. Have you heard /played any Faiths, if not they would be seeking looking at NAMM. I have 4 Faiths, 3 Taylors (552ce, K22 & K26), & 5 Gibsons ( J200 Std, J200 Quilt Anniversary, Hummingbird Vintage, Hummingbird Custom, & a Doves in flight) that's how good they are.

How is Gibson 'lowering' their prices after going bankrupt a 'good thing' ... they "lowered" their prices following their previous 35% increase (causing their bankruptcy) in effect going back to their pre-bankruptcy prices, except not quite, they are still noticeably more expensive than they were before their price hike. It's easy to come across as giving you a good deal if you are discounting already 'overpriced'' goods.

I would not buy a guitar with a "player port" or any sort of controls protruding through the side of the guitar. But then I don't like PU's in acoustic guitars either.
My SIL toured the Bozeman facility while he was living there, and as he was leaving, he was offered a job at Gibson. He declined, and completed his education at Montana State University instead. (Go Griz!) He isn't that thrilled with their QC... Maybe it has improved after the first year of the production run (like cars and trucks).
Gibson best at a clear and brilliant sound.
I personally don’t care for the port. I would absolutely consider a Gibson with out it.
But, if you want a Jumbo the Gibson isn’t true to spec.
The g series look like guitars that are not finished
Talking about sound is like dancing to architecture. But the g200 sounds better to my ear. I don´t like these varnished sounds they are like dead and presence-cutting sharp.

Don’t waste your money buying new acoustic, buy old ones which are much better.
Why would anyone buy an American made guitar that is more expensive and inferior in quality to one made somewhere else. Buy a high end Yamaha, they’re superb and have better quality control so are more consistent.
How can you possibly compare a high quality US made musical masterpiece with a gibson?

Dudeee, is Gibson paying you or something?! Guild sounds better, the wood is better, and the soundhole is polarizing, if not more disliked than liked, and sapele beats walnut every time. As someone who lives in Bozeman, where they make Gibsons, I can confidently say I’d never buy one. I’d always go to guild USA, Taylor, or Martin before going to Gibson.
I’am with you on that statement! I never found a j-45 that didn’t sound thin. Now the Epiphone ibg Hummingbird sounds better tan any Gibson I have ever played. . Maybe Gibson needs to go to China to get a little schooling

Was this a Gibson commercial . The guild wins hands down. The Gibson more of a fad guitar . Cheap wood , cheaper finish , and a hole in the top . Not to say it is twice the price . Seems like Gibson trying to get back some of the money on the so call price drop. How in the world do you praise a company that went up 35% then drop price a little. That’s not a price drop . That’s a company that tried to empty the pockets of Americans . Then dropped price to cover their ass !
