Why is the MLB so white?

- Demographics in the MLB are... interesting. The NFL and NBA are majority-Black. MLS is one of the most geographically diverse leagues in the world.
Compare those leagues to the American baseball and a really interesting question emerges: Why are there so many white people in the MLB? Well, I think I found the answer.
This is the beginning of a series I'm making about race, class and American sports. Subscribe so you don't miss new videos!

Let me get ahead of this… use this as your Braves slander button 🤦🏾♂️🥶
Atta boy Harper......
arcia is such a clown
The video is pretty good, I can save the slander for another time.
nah this video was incredible you get a free pass
Our Braves only have MHII. Kinda sad. In the early 90s they had Deion, Otis Nixon, Terry Pendleton, Ron Gant, Fred McGriff, Brian Hunter and David Justice (about 5 of those dudes on the SAME TEAM).
First thought when I clicked this was what about the Hispanics and Asians?
Such an incomplete video. He barely even touched on Hispanics in the game which rival the amount of whites in the game. And many of those Hispanics are from DR, Puerto Rico and Cuba and are actually black. Just Afro Latino.
As a Latino I think he doesn’t mention Hispanics and Asians in MLB because there are systems in place to encourage these groups of people to enter the league. For Hispanics/Latinos there’s international free agent markets where they can find youth and develop them from a young age. For Asians they have well developed leagues like the KBO and NPB which develop some players fully before they come to play in the MLB. There are systems in place to bring these communities into the sport with minimal barriers. For African-Americans or black folks these systems and networks don’t exist and there are greater barriers that the creator talks about that prevent black kids from playing the sport. that’s why what Griffey is doing and what this creator is talking about out is important so that we do support and accept systems that help young black kids get into and succeed in the baseball!
@@e.pappolopolous5772that’s because they rely on the same system for every other American to get into the mlb. The mlb has tried so hard in recent years to make baseball more popular among African Americans but it just hasn’t seemed to really do much. The mlb can’t really make a system to get players of one race into the mlb over another. Along with this there is no lack of black players from Hispanic countries.
Totally agree
Because Hispanic isn’t a race or an ethnicity. Majority of the “Hispanic” players mark white, black, American Indian, or two races and more on the census. If the US had terms for mixed race people like mestizo they would prefer that instead of the marking two races and more.
Funny that you say that since the percentage of American players in the MLB is dropping. People say baseball is a white man sport but it’s obviously the most diverse of all sports.
Baseball is proportionally about as white as the country as a whole. Minorities are overrepresented in some of the other major sports.

@@DracoGoinCrazy_Then this video should only be a minute long, lol

The expensive angle doesn’t make sense. There’s a lot of MLB players that come from third world countries that make it into the MLB: they had an equipment to play. Also, football is just as expensive and has a lot of blacks, so explain that? Much more expensive than MLB. Basket ball is the cheapest of all the sports to get into it and yet it’s predominantly black. You would think based on your “expensive” angle that it would be the more diverse because a lot of people could afford it. According to infogram MLB players percentages: 57.7% are white, 31.9% are Latino, 7.7% are black and 2.9% are Asian. Baseball is by far the most diverse of the big 3 leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB).
I’ve gotten this questions at lot. The answer is that the MLB has invested hundred of millions of dollars to make baseball access dirt cheap (or free) for kids in places like the Dominican Republic- and thus made baseball a kind of public good in those places. That’s not the case for baseball in America. America doesn’t see baseball as a public good- so families have to pay. America does, however, see FOOTBALL as a public good. So football (which, as you point out, is also expensive) is significantly subsidized for families and players (again, in large part because of investments from the NFL, school districts, schools and parents). Outcomes *very often* map to what countries, states, cities and corporations invest in. America invests a ton into football. That video is loading.. subscribe.
How is 57.7 percent of ONE RACE diverse??? Babe that’s over half.
Blacks are underrepresented in baseball but it is not a white sport. Latinos are the most represented group in MLB relative to the population.
MLB is 58% white.
Yeah he explains why that is in a reply up top
Most of the players in the Majors appear to be Hispanic to me.
If someone had a gun to my head and told me to name 3 black players in ten seconds I'll be a dead man. Mookie Betts is the only one that came to mind with little or no thought.
@@eaglefly1870Mookie Betts, Jay Jackson, and Taylor Trammell, you are no longer dead.

Are we counting people that are from Hispanic countries but are clearly black/ of African descent?🤔 because then u have a good number to pick from
@@drewscott176 just African descent
I think you’re completely missing the point that black kids just don’t like baseball as much as football or basketball, you’re spot on with the historical stuff but now there’s no evidence any team would turn away a player because of his race, baseball is all analytics these days so whoever is in the mlb is there because they’re the best. Also I played basketball, baseball and football in school and baseball was by far the cheapest so I don’t know what you’re talking about there. My bat and glove and cleats were like $15 combined secondhand
Thank you!!! I don't get why people have to make all these excuses and theories on why black kids don't play baseball instead of just realizing or admitting that they just don't like baseball anymore. You play and watch what you like. Black people like football, basketball and boxing so do that. White people like football, baseball and hockey so do that. Hispanics like baseball, boxing and soccer so do that. Nothing wrong with that. I love baseball and could care less who plays it or watches it. I'm still gonna watch it religiously like I do football and boxing.
Thank u
Youre just racist 😭@hennylo68
😂😂😂 your insane black people like baseball school and neighborhood government don’t support the programs this is from experience. You don’t know what your talking about.
You can't start playing baseball in school. He said you need to be at least 8 years old to start. Basketball and football you can start in high school. Baseball is a skill, you need to learn the mechanics and repetition at an early age. I played football and wrestled, I knew not to try out for baseball. I used to love baseball, I loved watching Jose Canseco and the late 80's to mid 90s Oakland A's before they became a minor league team. Soon to be Las Vegas A's.
If it was mostly about money then someone needs to explain to me why so many Hispanic players that come from extreme poverty still make it?
If I had to guess teams send more scouts to Hispanic countries and it’s a lot easier for people to be in leagues
@@user-tu7cx6gv1sthat doesn’t explain why they get into baseball. Mariano Rivera talked about being so poor, he learned baseball by using a stick and rocks. Scouts will go to the DR or Puerto Rico to scout high school talents. There is a literal baseball city in the Dominican Republic (I’ve been there, went to the red sox and braves facility). 99% of those players in the dr camps won’t make it onto an mlb team. Yet in the DR and PR, kids still learn to play, even in extreme poverty. Could it be that baseball is just not that desirable in the black community? Football and basketball. If I ever talk sports with any of my black friends, they almost always talk football and basketball. Rarely have I ever met one that likes baseball.
@@christopherkimber7679I think that has a lot to do with it for sure. I think that even in more impoverished areas, many young kids can still figure out some way or another to practice playing baseball
@@christopherkimber7679it’s because the whole sport is super popular in those countries and it’s one of the only ways to get out by going to the MLB
Hate to say it, but they are a cheaper labor pool.
There are a lot of black Dominicans and Cubans in the MLB. In fact, Latin Americans make up the majority of players - many of whom grew up dirt poor. I don’t think the reason for African Americans being a minority in MLB isn’t economic. They tend to be more interested in basketball and football for whatever reason. Baseball tends to be a game where fathers introduce it to their sons by playing catch at a very young age. Sadly, there is a lot of fatherlessness in the African American community. I think this is a big contributing factor.
Dominicans are like 70% of the league
Why is the NBA so black?
So you didn't check out the video? Wtf bro? Btw basketball has way more white players percentage wise than baseball.

New subscriber... I heard Jessie Dollemore recommend you a few months back and have been watching you as guest host for the week of June 24th 2024. Love listening to your content (and your voice frankly) you just have a really cool way of expressing yourself and bring focus to topics that I find really insightful. I watched this MLB one just now, it was interesting too, and that is coming from somebody who couldn't care less about MLB, still found the mini history lesson and context of past rules and 'gentlemen's agreement' compelling to stick around for. Good stuff... Glad you are getting a chance to reach a wider audience now.
Love your show and will be following on a regular basis. Jesse Dolliemore is promoting you and I can understand why.
This is a great video!
Sooo are we just going to ignore the massive number of Latino players in the MLB? Just the two races? Dude, come on.
Yes, the percentage of Black players in the MLB has shrunk by a lot. Totally valid point and criticism. But the idea that White owners are playing a part in this, or that baseball in general is just so racist, is ridiculous when there are tons and tons of Latino players on each and every team. Some teams are majority Latino!
My dude. We're both Braves fans. Care to share with me the single most popular player on the Atlanta Braves team right now? Yeah, Ronald Acuña, Jr. In case you haven't noticed, he ain't White. And the only reason the Braves don't have more is because they got suspended from the international draft because they were courting a Latino player too aggressively.
And this is to say nothing of the rising number of Asian players in baseball. Shohei Ohtani, a Japanese guy, is the most popular player in baseball right now.
Are you sure you follow baseball?
The editing is so crazy good

Great video! My brother played in the minor leagues in the early 1990s for the Tigers and the Pirates. And yes, Jesse Dollemore sent me here.
Ken Griffey Jr. said on the Pivot Podcast two things why baseball in the black community has a low turn out. You hit on one which is the cost of entry. The equipment alone at the low end can cost $200 for 6-7 year old. Compared to basketball and football where outside of sneakers and cleats, the uniform and pads are mostly provided by the team or organization. The other reason is that the sport is not watched or was played by someone in the house. Not saying someone in the house has to watch but if someone did play or is an avid fan, the child will be too.
For both of my kids (softball & baseball) I spent year one total $500 between them both. Not including registration which was lower since my wife and I signed them up early. Since I have been upgrading their equipment as the season goes on. Two new bats at $100 each. New cleats are needed soon since they are both still growing ($32-$75). I challenge my kids to do their best on the field and in class room. My oldest will get her custom glove ($149) for next spring since she was able to maintain an 92 average in math and get 5+ hits this fall season. My youngest wants to play catcher now, so I'm trying to figure out how to incentivize him from school and on the field accomplishments to obtain catchers gear by next spring.
I grew up watch baseball with my dad and played. I was decent but didn't play after high school. I was decent but the HBCU I attended did not have a baseball team. We had a club but that fizzled out towards my senior year. Chris Rock had a special I believe five or so years ago about being a black man who love baseball and trying to have conversations about the game with other black men but finding out they don't watch the game like he does. I run into this a lot with other black men too. If I see a dude with a fitted on I would bring up the team or what happened in the sport I would get blank stares. I've been told that baseball to them is boring and some just don't get the point standing around waiting for the ball. I try explaining the strategy when you have runners on base and the pitch count, but they don't care about it.
This is a great video series to do and I hope everyone understands Black/African American players in the MLB is a great thing! Right now I see many young Black/African American players coming up. There are many social media pages showcasing the future talent. I hope they get the eyes on them to make it to the league and inspire the next generation like Ken Griffey Jr. inspired me.
Thanks for sharing.
Your point about not having many other Black men to talk baseball with is very true. I am at the point now where I go to alot of games by myself for that reason.
I have a childhood friend (who is like a brother) who I text with practically daily during the season. And another friend who I played in a mens league with who calls a couple times a week JUST to talk baseball. And maybe one or two others who I occasionally talk with. But that’s it. Four friends to share something I am passionate about, with.
I watch every night. My kids are baseball fans because of it. I am thankful that I can share that with them.
But yes, the equipment for two growing children is $$$$$. We were blessed by their school because they gave us some their equipment (which was unused because of a lack of interest in having a team). (And we got the equipment because the head of phys ed is a Black man who knows I have my kids involved in baseball). If not for his generosity, I’d probably be thousands of dollars invested in equipment… for children… for one sport… just for practice…. I don’t know how you can be properly outfitted for baseball without alot of money.
Anyway, I hope your daughter gets the glove she wants!
@@callmejay05 my friends would go just to hang out, because baseball tickets are fairly cheap where i am.
No he said it was because we can't hit a curve ball. Shtooopid
Surprisingly it happens with Hispanics that are from the U.S. as well. We grew up as typical Hispanics in the U.S. but were mainly into football and basketball and casually watched baseball. By the time H.S. hit my brothers and cousins pretty much stopped watching baseball I for some reason began loving baseball. Now as a 40 year old I still love baseball and watch it all the time religiously, I really have no one to talk baseball with because not too many friends and family are into it. So while many Hispanics outside the U.S. love baseball, the ones that grew up here have lost interest as well.
If the equipment costs etc are the problem then why is there so many Dominican, Puerto Rican, Latin Americans in the league? The wealth distribution/disparity in those countries is much worse than the US.
This is dope. Im brand new to your stuff and now im subscribed 👍

This was really good. I have to admit, I sort of got reflexively turned off by the title because my brain dismissed it with "Well what about Dominicans?" but like, your videos are very good and I thank you for pointing out these disparities I generally try to be concious of, but generally hadnt been so when it came to baseball. 10/10 video's
i do think baseball's popularity will skyrocket in all communities in the future because of its longevity. Arian Foster's interview with Rogan states he will not allow his kids to play football because of what he experienced. Calvin Johnson was a dual athlete in college and regrets not pursuing baseball instead. A lot of football parents might push baseball over all other sports because of how safe it is on the brain.
Only issue is the nil money in football and basketball. Dudes are getting millions before going pro which really incentivises a lot of these kids to want to only play one of the two main sports. Plus I think baseball is suffering from the fact football is year round now with 7 on7’s and basketball too with aau a lot of these kids back then would spend the summer playing baseball. What you said is true but the money is talking way too much in the two main sports. Baseball when you make mlb is better than being in the nfl money wise for me way less risk of brain injuries.
@@willardmatsaudza3101There's 4 main sports in the U.S. not 2. Baseball and hockey round up the 4 main sports. Also, the main reason is baseball is too hard of a sport so you don't get money right away. Even if you're the number 1 pick which is a lottery ticket in football in basketball, in baseball you still have to be sent down to the minors to develop your game before being able to be called up which takes about 3 years. So they won't be making money right away. They're doing a lot better now and calling guys up a lot earlier at around 19 or 20 where before you had to stay in the minors til about 23 or 25. But that's only if you're really good. A lot of these kids come from poor backgrounds so don't wanna wait another 3 or r years after college to develop their game.
Pretty convincing argument. Also very well-researched.
And clearly presented I am impressed.
Why so the NBA so black
I'm really glad I found your channel. These are great topics that need to be talked about and exposed. Thanks to Jesse Dollemore.
The ‘baseball is too expensive’ reasoning has some truth to it, but it should really be phrased as ‘baseball is too expensive in the U.S..’ The travel teams and academies for American kids have so much money in them. That plus equipment makes the sport extremely expensive. The sport is still as popular as ever amongst poorer kids in places like the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Cuba; who don’t have all that equipment or organization. Which indicates this is a wholly American problem.

I think a lot of people in the comments hit on a lot of good points about how baseball has to be passed down from other family members for a child to be interested in the sport. I also think the coverage and access to MLB has changed over the last 20 years. The way MLB was covered when I was in high school was larger compared to how little baseball gets covered during the sports debate shows. Also, I feel like because MLB has had trouble marketing stars they've just relied on marketing large market teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs etc and it feels like the game is more regional instead of a national game.
I told you earlier that your show was referred by another podcaster very strongly from his platform. His name is Jesse Dollemore of the Dollemore Daily Show.
Actually it isn't "white." There are a lot of "black" players. The majority of them come from the Afro-Caribbean and the Caribbean region of South America. Not to mention the players from Asia and the mixed-race players from the Caribbean.
The concept that "black" people come from the United States alone is a very narrow perspective. The African diaspora covers the entire Western Hemisphere.
Nice!

Really nice video.
1. You didn’t mention that the lack of cultural relevance of baseball today.
The biggest female star in the 50s was Marilyn Monroe. She married Joe DiMaggio.
The biggest female star today is dating Taylor swift. She’s dating a football player. Ciara is married to a football player.
If you asked Americans to name 10 current baseball players how many could complete the task? 20%? maybe 30%? How many would still say Derek Jeter?
Most Americans would have trouble identifying Mike Trout. They would have little trouble recognizing Willie Mayes or Mikey mantle or babe Ruth in the 60s.
I can’t remember last time I had conversation I had about baseball with anyone. MMA is certainly more culturally important.
2. football is an even more expensive sport than baseball and yet black people are thriving on the gridiron. Dominicans have far less money than American blacks and yet they’re doing quite well in baseball today.
I was surprised you didn’t mention a few of these realities.
Otherwise nice work.
Really great points that are well made. I’ll cover the football part in an upcoming video - as a sneak preview, I think American communities see football as a public good in a way. Especially in Texas. So much so that families are much less likely to have to foot the full bill for their kids’ participation. I think this mirrors, also to your point, the way baseball is appreciated in DR or other Latin American counties. Thanks for the comment - really good stuff.
Football is a lot more subsidized than baseball by large bc it makes so much more money due to fan support. It's similar to soccer in other countries. Baseball in America is treated like chess in the DR. It doesn't draw as much attention or numbers to have it subsidized thus making it more expensive for individual families
That's my point. One of the reasons for the dearth of Blacks in baseball stems from its lack of relevance. If baseball was subsidized, it would make little difference.@@localblackman427

Holy crap. What a high quality video. Well done. I think that to white, American mlb fans, the issue of African American representation in baseball gets overlooked, because the sport “feels” so dominated by Latin players. As a fan, it seems like the vast majority of the post-game interviews of players are split between white guys and Latin players who need translators. Now to the viewer, without much forethought, it likely seems to be an extremely diverse sport, in which African American representation could be overlooked by average fans.
I think your looking at the color of the skin too much, maybe you should focus on the game and you’d recognize why the players are getting interviewed.
What a dumb comment
That’s such a dumb take. Sports aren’t about “representation” it’s about having the best players. 🤦🏿♂️
We live in a small rural town in North Carolina. Our youngest son loves baseball and plays baseball. It has been so disheartening to find a team for him to play on. He played for two years on a team that is in the next county over from our town. When he was able to play baseball for our district high school, the season was cut short for various reasons. Our son also wanted to start a Blitzball league with the local recreation center during the summer of 2023, but it never took off. I would love to see the MLB take an interest in our African American children and sponsor some Summer league programs.🙏🏾
Let’s go Braves ❤, appreciate you taking the time to talk about this topic, it’s something I noticed as baseball fan . When I was younger we had hero’s as Barry Bonds , Ken Griffey, Junior, Frank Thomas etc and now it’s kinda hard to find black players (non Hispanic)

I grew up a Braves fan as well, but I have to say, the Braves and I are not on good terms ever since they moved the stadium out of Atlanta. As a Georgia State Alum, I shouldn't complain since we did get our own football stadium out of the deal, but the organization's choice to build the new stadium smack in the middle of the suburbs, in my mind, is a clear indication of who they want attending their games. My break-up with the Braves, was one of the hardest ones of my life, but it's one I had to go through with as a matter of principle.
You also have to consider the deal Cobb County gave them. The owners profit off The Battery year round on top of the stadium sales. I believe it was more of a financial decision than a race one.
a record low of 59? There were many years when there were NONE.
What about the cost of American football gear?
I use to play little league baseball and when we move there was not where for me to play in the area only football and basketball,it’s funny because I said this was the reason there was not a lot of professional black baseball players and I said this many years ago to my children.
This to ask a question. What about before basketball was, near 100% white?
