It is so depressing in my low AZ desert garden, zone 9b. Our temps are finally leaving the 115's and up, but the damage is already done. I spend my days watering, covering and uncovering my plants just to keep them alive. I planted a number of big containers of sweet potato and at least they are doing well. Hopefully I will get a harvest from them. Nothing else I grew gave me any harvest. Hoping my fall and winter garden is a success this year. Only thing that grew really well were romaine lettuce which I planted too much of at one time. Succession gardening in this new season for me! Love seeing your beautiful garden and your beautiful flower arrangements! It is a "pick me up session!". Thank you!

Once I got the shade up it took at least a month for things to get out of shock. What lived finally started to look healthy again but the damage was depressing. Now that I have shade and mulch (alfalfa) things are growing..new plants sprouting…hang in there friend! It will turn around (hug)

I got an in line hydroponics filter for my hose. It has really helped with salt, chlorine, and fluoride removal. Highly recommend…not too expensive either!
Since I have zero space in my apartment, my uncle is letting me use his yard this coming fall to start a new garden. I may have to wait until September to plant a lot of my favorite plants because I only have small containers for now.
Spraying plants with water to keep spider mites in check was a huge revelation to me this season. It's against conventional wisdom to let your plant leaves get wet so I made sure to keep them dry. Then I realized the experts that give that advice live in places that get regular rainfall and are worried about diseases like powdery mildew. I rarely get powdery mildew. At the same time I realized that spider mites proliferated in hot, dry weather. The spider mites usually killed off of my cherry tomato plants early in the season. This year I occasionally watered down the whole plant and it kept the spider mites from killing them off a little longer than before. Next year I will try to do it more regularly.
I understand it’s depressing when you have worked so hard all spring and it’s too hot then comes the hurricane season her in Florida which destroyed my garden. Sweet potatoes were doing good till the dears ate all the leaves 😢I am giving up with gardening for now.
Wow I live in Sierra Vista, AZ zone 8b 4800 feet elevation and I have to water 3x/ week to keep my plants healthy and some still look bad. We have limited irrigation zones so part of the reason. My roses 3x/week 30 minutes each watering, vegees the same, flowers the same citrus the same. Trees in summer every 2 weeks 90 minutes. We use the adjustable bubblers that you can adjust up or down for more or less water.
If I already have watermelon and cantaloupe in my garden bed (the watermelon is huge, the melon is just tiny, just one cantaloupe plant is about 12 inch long with leaves and 3 tiny cantaloupes… Can I prune the watermelon? I’m going to prepare my containers and raised bed for tomatoes and jalapeño ! And I’m going to transplant my fig tree for a bigger container … And my husband is going to transplant a lemon and orange tree in my back yard… we are going to buy the trees … Thank you very much for taking the time to teach us all about gardening. 🤗🥰
August is good for making fall plans to attend and get entry times for the October "Great American seed up" in Phoenix and the DESERT botanical garden fall plant sale. You must sign up early for entry times. Both events are in October and are wonderful.
I planted some I'itoi onions last weekend from the onions I saved earlier this year. Today, as I was (finally) setting up a sun shade, I saw a little sprout coming up! I also found some I'itoi from Vilardi Gardens at Summer Winds Nursery in Glendale this weekend and bought a container. I'm going to let them get a bit larger before I replant them. Other than the onions, the only things left alive is an Eggplant and a Rosemary plant. I also bought and installed an automatic olla watering system from Thirsty Earth last month and so far, it seems like it is really going to help.

I've seen the iron phosphate kill worms on contact, still better than not treating, but just use sparingly as it can negatively affect soil life if over applied. What camera are you using? Really liking the production quality, been following over the years loving the new format!

That's great they lasted 3 years. Yes that happens often. Production usually slows down after 3 years so planting new ones (in a new spot) is a good idea anyway.
If I only knew I could amend my tomato plants, etc with worm castings, etc .. I wouldn't have ripped everything out of the bed, and may have had something that would have produced. All of that work for nothing. Maybe i should just throw in the towel.
Hey Growing in the garden I'm in zone 10b, so. California. Question on ants, I know they are part of the cycle to break things down. But how can I tell if they are making a nest! Is there a difference? When you see ants in raised bed should I worry? I sprinkled some diatenaous earth...

With the tomatos i recommend to cut the greenest cuttings and let it sit in water it will grow roots and grow again

Probably a couple of times a week. Checking the soil is the best way to know for sure.

Is the citrus fertilizer and worm castings needed on well established trees? Not at the base right! Farther out where the roots reach?

Generally, don't worry about them unless they are in large numbers or causing significant damage.
I HAVE TOMATO seedlings that don't grow quickly and some of the leaves (not all) dry up. Is it best to start over? Thank you
Shoot. You can start over or look for starts. Arizona Worm Farm has some.
Can any organic matter be used in raised beds when prepping them for planting?
If it has too much carbon it will use nitrogen to break down. I generally only use beans (cowpeas and fava beans) in the beds like this.

Keep things a little more moist - that can discourage them.

As nightitme temps come down you should see the worm activity pick up. I like fish emulsion better, but that may be a personal preference .
