RIP. Hard to believe Mick Goodrick is gone. It means he was mortal, something I questioned for decades.

I was lucky to study with Tim while I was at Berklee, the best guitar teacher I've had in my life!

I learned from Mick. I was not advanced or philosophically adept enough to understand what taught. I was too young. I get this now.

I studied all the books by Mick for a very long time and I am of course still doing it. It is the first time I “hear” him talking but it is like I know him since ever, from Gary Burton on. Thank you being in this world. ❤

Geez, almost 30 years ago much came to my small east coast Canadian university to do a clinic and performance and stood inches from that Klein guitar of his and I'm so glad he's still playing it! I'm still playing the dang guitar I was playing then too!!

I just stumbled on this video. Thank you Tim for posting this. It's so good to see Mick again here.
In the time before he retired, the world was in chaos over the pandemic and nobody knew what would happen next but I thought the time was right to try to gather as many questions as I could ask while his world was still in teaching.
The more detailed my questions were, the more cryptic his answers were. Yeah I accepted that, but it was frustrating. Especially when it came to his ideas behind and about voice leading.
The lockdown provided me with an opportunity to study this material with others on Skype and I saw Mick regularly, and the more answers I came up with on our own, the more I'd bring to him with a sense of discovery. It was THEN that he'd give some profound insight that would push me to the next level.
He was reluctant to ever give the first step unless he was convinced I had come to it on my own. Then his hand was out to pull me to the next level; there I'd find more questions I hadn't imagined. And it would begin again.
Great to see this video. I'm inspired to try to write down what he gave me...and to realize just HOW me taught so much by making his students discover it for themselves.

Thanks for sharing! @ 10:17 The guitar is a complex instrument, yet there are also simple basic memorizable chord shapes that essencially render it as an autoharp for pop songwriters (nothing wrong with that). While almost anyone can pick it up with a little effort; at the same time there’s another universe of possibilities for those who want to go deeper.

Mick had this hilarious thing he'd do. His right hand would be on the tuners at the tailpiece, and he'd reach up into the air above the nut and "tune" an air tuner 'til the guitar was in tune.
