    This was the first EF-5 tornado to strike the U.S.

    • @railfanjackson4531
      @railfanjackson4531 Před 4 lety +22

      It was the first tornado to be rated EF5 since the implementation of the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The last “5” rated tornado was the 1999 OKC tornado, and back then we were still using the original Fujita Scale. The Enhanced Fujita Scale was adopted only around 3 months before this tornado struck.

    I was about 5 months old when this tornado hit Greensburg. My dad was sitting with me in the recliner and he was just about asleep when Ksnt came on and said we are tracking a dangerous tornado in Greensburg. My dad started getting calls and he went to the capital that night I think. But looking back at it 16 years later. It’s was a tragedy and made history in kansas. lots of lives were injured that day.

    If a scenario, such as what happened in Greensburg occured, it would warrant a Tornado Emergency. Both PDS Warnings and Tornado Emergencies can be issued in either a SVS or new TOR. NWSI 10-511(Dated October 24, 2012) 3.3.4.1 states:
    Use of “TORNADO EMERGENCY” terminology is appropriate for the tornadic situation if all of the following criteria are met:
    a. Severe threat to human life is imminent or ongoing
    b. Catastrophic damage is imminent or ongoing
    c. Reliable sources confirm tornado (either 1 or 2)
    (1) Visual
    (2) Radar imagery strongly suggests the existence of a damaging tornado
    (e.g., debris ball signature).
    The listed impact for a tornado emergency is listed as catastrophic. PDS warnings list it as significant, and regular tornado warnings say possible.

    The day of the Greensburg EF5 it was a moderate risk day(15% hatched for strong tornadoes), no PDS tornado watch but a 50/30 prob for 2 tornadoes/1 EF2-EF5 tornado, but a tornado emergency was declared.5-10 minutes before it hit the town.
    The day of the Parkersburg Iowa EF5 tornado there was a moderate risk(15% hatched for strong tornadoes)there was a PDS tornado watch, but no tornado emergency was declared before.it hit the town. Likely more intense than the Greensburg tornado. Debris from homes were granulated into tiny pieces.
    The day of the Joplin EF5 tornado it was a moderate risk day(in a 10% hatched area for strong tornadoes), there was no PDS tornado watch nor was a tornado emergency declared before it hit the town.
    The day of the Moore,.OK EF5 tornado there was a moderates risk(I believe it was either in a 5% or 10% hatched area for strong tornadoes, tornado watch had low probs 40/20, but a tornado emergency was declared before it hit the town.
    The EF5s on April 27, 2011 and one on May 24, 2011 were both high risk days(45% hatched area for strong tornadoes), were all in high probability PDS tornado watches, and multiple tornado emergencies were declared.

      I was tracking that very storm when it hit Parkersburg because I had family there, there was indeed a PDS watch for portions of central and northeastern Iowa, but there wasn't a tornado emergency, as of 2010, the NWS office in Des Moines is now able to issue tornado emergencies, even though Iowa has only had one, and that was for Cherokee county in northwestern Iowa during the EF4 on October 4th, 2013

      its like what a lot of people have been saying for the longest time. "nature is very unpredictable and can make a total 180 in a instant!". thats why you hear a lot of storm chasers say to "stay about a few miles away when wanting to videotape a tornado" and plus the fact that sometimes those storm prediction models the weather people use don't come close to predicting events like moore and greensburg and joplin.

    • @cubby091398
      @cubby091398 Před 8 lety +1

      I believe the Parkersburg tornado was more intense than the Greensburg tornado. In Greensburg the debris was mainly the size of sticks and boards. In Parkersburg the debris from the most well- built homes were granulated into pieces no bigger than a quarter.
