Mr. Speakman is so tough, he even kicked cancer's butt! He used his Kenpo 6.0, which is 5.0 + chemo & radiation... the perfect weapon indeed LOL.
I had cancer in 2013. From 220 to 185. And weak as a kitten. It made me a kinder person.
Me, I'm incurable. I cut everyone and everything negative out of my life.
2014 for me. Still here. And I'm grateful.

The biggest or hardest battle, is usually with our self, and our fears, keeping moving and breathing, never deliberately holding our breath or pausing, if we are standing still, we are going backwards. its often a life changing event, that makes us change, finding a way, i loved that comment from Jeff.

I began my study of American Kenpo under Paul Mills as a teenager and had the honor of meeting Mr. Parker. Although I have studied other Martial Art styles over the years, Kenpo practitioners are special to me, especially those that knew Mr. Parker. There has always been a sense of family among Kenpoists. Mr. Speakman's positive philosophy of life and Kenpo after overcoming cancer is truly inspirational. He possesses both the power, wisdom, and humility of his teacher.
I cannot wait to get started in training in Kenpo.I have looked everywhere for this style and I finally found it and I am too hyped!
Had a similar situation minus the medical issues. I left my Goju Karate teachers to do it the way I see it. I feel martial artist has to make these systems work for themselves.
So good to see Jeff Speakman back in good health. I met him years (!) ago when he visited our Joe Corley American Karate Cumberland school during the press tour for The Perfect Weapon. (I was chief instructor at the North Springs school at the time.) Another Kenpo great, Jay T. Will (R.I.P.), was living here in Atlanta at the time and helped arrange the visit. Great gentleman, great martial artist.
I always told my students who weren't able to make it there that day that Jeff was one of 2 guys I ever met that had the fastest hands imaginable. (The other was Jay T.)
I’m a big fan of Mr Speakmam , his movies & his kempo system. I hope one day I have the honor to meet him. 🥋🐉👊🏼
This was great! I learned so much and got to see another previous Goju Ryu practitioner who applied some skills to his new art and love Kenpo 5.0. It was awesome to learn
I understand what he means about that liberation from fear after surviving cancer, because I myself am a kidney transplant recipient who for several years endured dialysis and even survived peritonitis. There’s a lot of truth to what he said, after surviving a terrible illness you feel liberated from fear. It’s like Bruce Lee said, “only by dying do you liberate yourself from the fear of it. So master the art of dying.” A life threatening illness will definitely assist in that, although I most definitely would not recommend that.”

I wanted to meet him when he was on grand cayman years back. But he did a little demo with instructor Bob Daigle at the time.
Intelligent, realized thoughts and observations. I am so glad to have my opinion about Mr Speakman reinforced and strengthened by the word he speaks and his viewpoints. Amazing man.
What an outstanding human being, who bravely overcame, his near death experience fight with throat cancer, thus emerging victorious from it, also continuing to live life to the fullest and to his maximum potential!
I admire his humility, yet courageous tenacity, to row against the current no matter what, in other words no giving into the peer pressure of his critics and detractors, instead choosing to go his own direction, honouring Grandmaster Ed Parker by going in his own direction.
In the end we all need to do, what is personally best and beneficial for us,cause even if we try to follow someone else's path or vision, there will always be critics and detractors, no matter whom we choose to follow, align with, or try to appease.

I had a question relating to Jeff Speakman. He made Perfect Weapon (1991) around the time Steven Seagal put out Out to Justice. Steven Seagal recently was featured in a video 24 hours with Steven Seagal where Karate Black belt Jessi e Enkcamp visits Steven Seagal. Will any Kenpo Karate person review the 24 hrs with Steven Seagal. Two MMA fighters, a Aikido instructor, and a traditional Japanese Karate instructor gave reaction videos of the two part series. There is a backlash between MMA and traditional martial arts because one of the MMA reviewers reviewed the techniques, but ignored the spiritual philosophy because they feel that's not important in martial arts.
Fair question but I'm not sure who will do it. We don't generally do reviews or reactions like that on this channel, though that doesn't mean the topic or a similar one won't be addressed at some point.

Hey Master Dan I know Master Kelly has a school down here as far as I know and understand in Delray has he stopped teaching because I can't find his school anywhere or does he no longer teach in Florida? Cuz I've been really wanting to get back in Roots with him I was a student a long time ago when I was a kid and I would like to be able to get back in touch with him he probably won't recognize me now but I would really like to be able to complete my training with him considering the fact that you may know him personally I would like to really be able to get a chance to get in contact with him as far as tempo I want to learn as much as I can but there is no decent schools where I'm at as far as tempo I know a guy named professor piero Joseph pierro but he's Chinese temple I think he's a little different I just really wanted to figure out what I can do to get in contact with Master Kelly I enjoyed learning from him he's very simplistic mind but yet over the top and got got it to a point where you can understand it even the most simplistic of terms he puts it in a different perspective in a different scenario to a point where you could understand it either that or I'd like to be taught by you yourself if you ever decide to start teaching yourself as a full-time instructor I just would like to be able to get in contact with either you or him as far as being taught I really want to be able to learn the art of kenpo I have some experience with it I just want to finish

How did jeff get cancer?Did he smoke or drink heavily?
He wasn't much of a drinker or a smoker as far as I know. Sometimes lung and throat cancer can develop from other situations or even on it's own, it isn't always from smoking. I'm honestly not sure how he got it.
He should choose a successor just in case.
I think he's got people in place. He has people that run the organization very closely with him.

How did he get throat cancer?
He didn't say, there are many ways to get it. I remember when it was announced years back and it wasn't clear how sick he was at the time. Thankfully he made it through.
@@ArtofOneDojo thanks for the reply. I was wondering if anyone ever heard him say why. He doesn't smoke and usually that is how people get to stage 4 throat cancer. That is why it has always stumped many of us, on how he got it.
If memory serves, Mas Oyama died of lung cancer though he never smoked. Cancer is something that overpowers one's immune system. The causes are varied.
So jeff does smoke?because throat cancer is always caused by smoking and drinking.

No, throat cancer is NOT "always" caused by smoking and drinking. Smoking and drinking CAN increase risk factors, but so can some viruses (HPV, and Epstein-Barr virus can cause Cancer), Gastroesophageal reflux disease (Gerd), and exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals. There are a lot of possible causes for throat cancer, it's not "always" smoking and drinking.
I already answered this the first time you asked and I said as far as I knew Jeff was NOT a smoker or heavy drinker.
Oral sex is a major factor for throat cancer. For both men and women.
Hi you might find this interesting there is a medical system called German new medicine. And when I heard you tell me about your cancer I thought about it. You are afraid to speak and that's what caused the cancer very interesting stuff German new medicine have a look it might be something you find interesting
Who is afraid to speak? Neither Mr. Speakman nor myself were afraid to talk so not sure what this refers to. Not talking however does not cause Cancer, though there various ways cancer can develop and be battled.

A person who puts a gi on and throws a belt around his shoulders for an interview is over compensating for self doubt in skill , you would never see great ufc fighters do this .true skill shows thru even in a T shirt
Or maybe....just maybe....he's just wearing the belt casually around his neck. It's actually not that uncommon. He's in his office setting at his school, and we do have a thing in Kenpo where we don't let the belt touch the floor so it's common to wear it around the neck. As far as him wearing it in the interview...so what? It's not out of context. His belt is very unorthodox so unless you know specifically why he has this particular belt no one will even know the rank of it.
As for overcompensating....I don't think you're going to find any one who actually went to one of his seminars and FELT a strike from Jeff Speakman who will agree with you on that. He doesn't have to compensate for anything.
I get what you're saying but this is certainly a nitpick.
Master Speakman does not have self doubt in skill. He created his 5.0 system because of his skill and knowledge.
Beginners mind is one of the most important states of mind to have in Karate. It means having an open mind to peoples opinions and different ways of training.
