Hi my name is Danielle, welcome to my True Crime and Makeup series! I’ve been interested in true crime for the longest time now, what started with me watching true crime on TV with my Nan from a young age eventually turned into studying for a degree in Law & Criminology.
When I first watched Bailey Sarian’s series I was completely hooked, I loved how she had combined two of the things I’m most passionate about and delivered it so well. She totally inspired me to take the leap and do the same thing on my channel, so all credit for the idea goes 100% to her.
I’m from the UK and will be covering cases from both the UK and internationally, let me know if there are any cases that you’d like to see from me! More cases will be coming soon so please subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

I actually grew up in the area where Roch had set up his commune toward the end. We were all told to stay away from any men driving a big blue van...my father had a blue van at the time and looks similar to Roch, so he was actually brought in for questioning! Flash forward about 15 years, my younger sister starts dating this boy with piercing blue eyes...turns out, he is Roch's son, who can be seen as an infant in group photos of the commune from back then. This case hits very close to home for me.
If you know, how did he end up traumatized? and did it affect their relationship?
Woah. Holy shit. How did he grow up?
Are they still together?
Whoah. Without giving the son's name, can you give us some more gossip? What does the son think? How does he feel about his father/mother?
I hope your sister and his son found peace
Coworker: "dude, you watching makeup tutorials now?"
Me: "ummm...yeah"
Coworker:"who's the bearded guy?"
Me: "founder of Loreal..."
Kinda felt easier than explaining the truth to be honest.
You'd be surprised how many people you know watch these videos on the regular.
Love the explanation great story
Quite literally snort laughed
Love your response, short and to the point 😂
😂🤣
I grew up in the small town next to Burnt River and I remember this story quite clearly. It was well known what was going at their compound but for some reason the police never wanted to get involved until they absolutely had to. As a child I remember the women would walk around town and sell their pies. My mother always bought one because she felt sorry for them but she would immediately throw it out. When we would see Roch in town my mother would make us cross the street. It’s true what the women say about his eyes. There was something about them and even as a young child I could feel him looking right through you into your soul. He was creepy af but weirdly mesmerizing by the way he walked slowly and proudly like he was God. When he was on the run for 6 weeks it was always believed he was never far from the commune. I know someone who snuck in there one night while Roch was still missing and he said he felt like he was being watched the entire time from the woods. Such a sad and disturbing story that is so hard to comprehend.
Jonquiere here and I thought it was a myth. WTF
I remember when they lived in Kirkfield.😮
Ugh that's creepy as hell!
I'm from Quebec, Canada, and Roch Thériault is DEFINITELY well-known. I've grown up with this story and I have vivid memories of my mom and my older sister reading the book by Gabrielle Lavallée and being traumatized by it. I've came across videos where they talked about the "Ant Hill Kids" cult and I didn't connect the two together because Quebec is french-speaking so we never use that expression to talk about this cult. Glad to see a french-canadian case getting some coverage and props to your pronunciation of Thériault !
PS You are right to say he is one of the most well-known criminal in Canadian history. I even saw his walking cane on display in a museum lol
I'm also from Quebec and I had never heard this story. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that we came from Ontario and stayed well within our english speaking bubble.
Zero knowledge of this horror * Ontario here at present but during his crazy I was out west ~
I’m from Canada and I’ve never heard of this
can you imagine being an adopted child, wanting to learn about your biological parents, and getting a DNA test, only to discover that you were this psychopath's baby? like dear god I feel bad for all those kids
I was thinking the same thing!! 😱
His oldest son’s are actually well known and have kept their father’s name.

The scariest part is thinking about how many places in the world have things like this going on right now and we'll never know about it. Such a horrifying thought
Yes in deed. Scary
Because we are indeed in hell
I always think about the dates and where I was and what I was doing when things like this were going on.
Even worse things....
@@stacy8935 How is that even possible...
This is seriously next level, and I am pretty desensitized to horrific things.
Same wtf.
Shit gave me nightmares

Me too. Although, I can't handle stuff involving children and wish I hadn't listened to this one.
welcome to Canada. (I'm Canadian and even I DIDNT KNOW)
I'm really desensitized to true crime since I've been into it for seven years- but Christ- I had to pause this one several times due to the horrific descriptions of the torture. I wasn't even eating. Her narration really did this story justice.
Is it just me or did anyone else notice the fact "cult leader checklist" was way too fucking similar to the traits of an abusive person 🧐
it takes a certain personality to be a cult leader tbh
Yep...I thought the same thing. Every last word was my ex. 😳
Narcissists are not very original
Exactly 💯 right
It makes sense if you think about it.
Abusers do what they do because they want to control the people around them at all costs. That's why almost all abusers are extremely charming to people who are in their outer orbit, because charm gets you a lot when you aren't super close to someone. Plus, being charming is an excellent way to insulate themselves from abuse accusations when they ultimately do leak out.
The second that being funny and effusive and charming stops working, they move on to the next tactic. Whether it be psychological manipulation, scare tactics like breaking things and screaming, using isolation or finances to keep their victim trapped, or actually getting violent, whatever they need to do to gain control, they will do it. They will even set themselves up in a way that helps them justify their tactics. For example, my ex was only ever physically violent towards me when he was drunk, but once I got out from the relationship I realized that what actually happened was he would drink in order to be physically violent.
Cult leaders do the exact same thing, just on a bigger scale. It's all about controlling other people in order to meet their wants, whether that be money, sex (often with minors), fame, an audience for their ramblings, etc etc etc.
Danielle: “so prepare yourself for this one.. and don’t eat!”
*Me cooking and getting ready to eat*: oh shit
Me eating my midnight snack (roastbeef sandwich)
I did the same
Me literally opening a bag of popcorn….
i always sit down and watch these with breakfast 😅
Same girl same 😩
I actually watched a documentary on this same cult. The gentleman who had been castrated absolutely regretted what he did. There was also a gentleman that was brought in by his girlfriend who was part of the cult and he started seeing signs that things were not okay. He managed to escape and begged her to come with him. She refused. I just can't imagine how one person can have this much control over multiple people. When you said he prayed on weak individuals... that's what made sense.
What was the name of the documentary?
(Canadian here!) I’ve watched A LOT of true crime, but this level of torture left me physically ill. This is one of the most gruesome accounts I’ve ever heard. The way he carved her arm! 🤮
I really appreciate the empathy you show for the victims in your video. You do absolutely zero victim blaming.
Very interesting case. I’m going to watch something therapeutic now.
Danielle is great for not victim blaming! Sorry but adult individuals who are not restrained and put up with this kind of abuse are as mentally sick as the abuser! I don't understand and will never understand why their survival instinct is absent.
Yea same I stopped watching after he did surgery and killed the two year old boy
Canadian too and I had no idea either!
Also Canadian! I’ve never heard of this case before.
& I thought Robert Pickton was sadistic…
His cellmate who killed him deserves a freaking medal
i bet he killed him because he never shut up... i’m sure he just never stopped talking.

Spoiler alert much??
I felt the same way about the man who killed Jeffrey Dahmer

What a horror story.
As soon as you said "don't eat" I immediately looked down at my bowl of ice cream and scarfed it down during the ad break. Now I'm hoping I don't throw up
This is the first time in 2 years I've felt compelled to comment on one of your videos... because I was NOT ready for the tooth / string / door pulling compassion. As a avid true crime listener, I appreciate how you present the information in the most tasteful way possible- even when talking about the worst people.
Just when I think this story is at its worst... it gets worse.
Also who complains about anything around this guy?! My leg could be falling off and I'd be like, "I'm good, never better!"
Right? That’s what I was thinking the whole time!

Me too 😊😊
Never better lol 😂
This
I met Gabrielle Lavallée, one of the survivor from Roch Thériault’s cult, when I was in high school. She made a presentation in my class of ethics. I remember finishing the school day completely traumatized and there began my obsession with true crime. I can’t believe this took place in my province. It is a very well known case in Québec, along with Karla Homolka’s.
Im from mtl, but I'm a little too young to remember both of these cases, along with the "Don't Fuck with Cats" guy. Found out about that case when I was in my third year at Concordia 😳

💚Jesus lived the life we couldn't live and died the death we deserve. Repent of your sins and trust in Him💙
Sorry I believe in something bigger than us out there but I'm definitely in no cult, nor would I ever want to be. I don't think that people who believe in God are cultish. That's just an unfair thing to say
This is a absolutely fascinating case
I know this case, (I'm in the US) because of the movie, Savage Messiah. It's definitely worth checking out. There's also a documentary. Apparently, Roch especially hated male children. One woman escaped and took 2-3 of her kids. The boy could barely speak or walk. Not because of a disability, but because he was neglected.
I have seen the movie and I agree, It is worth checking out
That's how I know of this case as well. That movie terrified me to my core. I watched it once over 10 years ago and never watched it again. I still have nightmares about it. It has plagued me that there is so little information about this story out there.
Fellow Canadian 🇨🇦 here! This story was terrifying 😳🤯😱 I was born and raised in Ontario (i am 37 years old) and never heard of this case before! Well done Danielle 👏 I am binge watching your video's as i am a new subscriber and love your channel! ♥️
I feel for the first wife, I can only imagine how lucky she feels for dodging a bullet. So glad she was able to get away.
I have to admit that I smiled when you said his cellmate killed him. He deserved that and more.
If the cops would stop putting these idiots in 'Protective custody'. They would all get murdered by other inmates!

Honestly murder is never justified but he kinda deserved it. Shoutout to his cellmate
I'm in my 40's, and from BC, Canada. I'm an avid fan of true crime, and because of the life I've lived, am pretty desensitized to anything horrific, including this case. I'm doing a lot of work around that. Thank you for sharing so respectfully, and for keeping it intriguing. I have never heard of the Ant Hill Kids before now.
I am from Quebec and this is a very well known case.. since life sentence is 25 years here (and you rarely do the actual 25 years), we were all afraid of the day he was going to get out which was coming really soon and everyone felt a certain delivrance when we heard on the news that his cellmate had killed him 🙌
I think the only reason Jim Jones gets more attention (besides being an insane narcissist) is because of how many people died and the fact he murdered a U.S Rep who came to investigate. But nah this dude would have made even Jones cringe
this dude is worse however Jim jones and that suicide/mascare still sticks with me to this day because of all the people he was able to influence & a majority of those that died being kids...but so many people!! terrible and frightening. glad we learn from our history. there have been cult mass suicides but not to that degree and I don't think really since the Hailey bop or whatever comet one.. where they all wore the nikes etc. but yeah..
@@sarahluke5253 the comet thing was "Heaven's Gate" in 1997. 39 people died.
@@sarahluke5253 This dude was ten times more gross and sadistic than Jones 100 percent. Jones was full of himself and used bodyguards to enforce his rules but if I’m remember he didn’t actually assault anyone in the group sept maybe his own wife so yeah even Jones would have called this dude a pos
This is way to disgusting 🤮 I can’t unheard 🤢
Jones and Roch were both psychopaths. They didn't feel empathy. If anything, they would have been jealous of each other, and compared who had more power over his followers, though of course each would have verbally condemned the other. It's hard to say who was "worse" - it depends on how you define "bad." But Jones did things you might not know about, very violent indeed, besides just ordering the mass murder. He was a true sadist.
"I'm really sorry I told that story." Oh, Danielle, you sweet, sweet soul.
She is really so sweet
Isn’t that the point?
If you’re not horrified or sad, you are a psychopath! She is a real human!
As a Canadian- THANK YOU! Please do more Canada cases, lol, despite our reputation we DO have some pretty crazy cases...like this! Even I didnt know until you told me! xoxo Ottawa
have you heard of the current Cult that has just settled into Richmount, Saskatchewan. We need to expose that one as well. Yes, I too am Canadian, and I live in Manitoba.
Like Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka
I'm from Quebec and I've heard of this case! I can understand why other Canadians haven't heard of it, we're pretty individualistic as a province and tend to see ourselves as a bit of an outcast. There's also the language barrier, plus back then I think a lot of local news didn't tend to make it past the provincial level since information wasn't as readily available everywhere. We have a few pretty well-known cases that wouldn't ring any bells to someone outside of Quebec. Pretty wild to see something I've heard of growing up covered like this!
Exactly = is this what is happening with the PETER NYGAARD story ?? Why is that story not being addressed, and publicized. Bet no one knows about that insane Canadian Story either..........
After hearing all that, I now understand why the mother left her child outside to die. I guess it must have been a less gruesome death than the one Roch would've eventually inflicted. So horrific and sad.
Yep 😕 I can understand & 99.5% agree with Gabrielle, unfortunately 🙄😥😢🙄
She gave that baby mercy. Freezing to death hurts for only 5 minutes before everything goes numb and you fall asleep. Compared to a life time of torture.
Yeah. Especially since she couldn't get away from the cult to give the child to authorities, what she did was literally the only option for the child. In a weird way, at least it was HER decision.
And it also speaks volumes to her view on the "quality of life" living under that psychopath as opposed to being killed.
THIS absolutely fucking insane😭
Even his cellmate, a murderer, thought he was immediately insufferable and put him down. I don't understand how all those people worshipped a mean, disgusting depraved drunk.
People simply choose their loyalties or faith.
@@joshanonline often without feeling like it is a choice.
Spiritual desperation will lead people to some very sad extremes. Some people want so desperately to have a religious group to belong to, somewhere they feel spiritually uplifted, and they fall in with false prophets like this joker. Religion is a powerful driving force for many people, so if they genuinely believe that someone is divinely blessed, if they believe they speak for God... they'd go to such horrible extremes for them. :(

Stockholm syndrome
French Canadian here, we learnt about this in school, there was a whole thing to raise awareness on how you could get swiped up in this, how it looks like, what could happen, etc. They also showed us the movie a couple of years later (it came out in 2002) and I've seen it at school at least every other year until high school graduation. We had that whole week where we watched documentaries and movies about school shootings including but not limited to the Polytechnique shootings, cults documentary (this one and Raël, a French one) and all that stuff. It was in the "religion, spirituality and moral studies" class we had.
It's a good thing they made sure to bring awareness about in school, it's always said that anyone could be dragged into a cult under the right circumstances and the right time
No matter how many times I come back to the Ant Hill Kids, I'm never actually ready. These things shock me all over again, even though I already know about them
Danielle… I am speechless. This has to be the worst torture I’ve ever heard of about a cult. I cannot even begin to imagine your horror while researching this.
Sadly, there's Alot more Cults out there 😪 & the same (or worse) tortures regularly go on & it's daily. In a way I feel bad for them All, however, they're "drinking the Kool-aid", signed contracts, etc. (Checkout the way Scientology operates) & you will see.
@@joannewolftail5773 0]s
@@joannewolftail5773 What is a contract worth if you were manipulated into signing it? As she described, many of those people just need help, they are vulnerable, they have no clue what to do with their lives and they believe that the leader would help them.
I had a tough childhood with lots of mental health stuff going on with my mother, my sister and myself, and both my mother and my sister were obsessed for a while with some random evangelical churches. It was luckily not the same thing, but it made them feel better and I already found it creepy enough for the standards where I am from.
Why I didn't fall for it? Not because I was "better" or anything, I had just always been into logic and science so no matter how great something sounded and how sad I was, I didn't just believe things with no proof.
So what, some people have minds that work differently. My family members are really compassionate and intelligent people. They went/are going through higher education. They were just hurting at that time and longing for some comfort. And even if other people aren't that intelligent, do they deserve to suffer because of the way their brains work?
In my opinion, victims, as the name already says, are absolutely not to blame. You should try to protect yourself as best as you can, but a crime is still a crime. Manipulation is manipulation, and it is wrong, even if it is hard to stop all kinds of cult leaders from doing it.
I bet, if everyone of these victims had a charismatic partner instead, who supports them throughout their lives, they could both appear normal and be happy.
Sorry for the rant, but this is my opinion.
... you can't go through horror by researching something... you go through horror by living it...
I cant imagine the horror of the cult members as they suffered this.
I was raised S.D.A.
My "mother" held my hand on a wood burning stove when I was 3. They didn't take me to a hospital but to my grandmother instead. She used the S.D.A. home remedies on it. I believe my grandmother always wanted to escape it protect us but she was always so scared also. She had taken Polaroids of the injury to save for evidence. I didn't know about this until she showed me when I was nearly 30 years old. It had burnt so badly you could see all the tiny bones of my hand through the thin layer of skin that was left.
Six months after this incident my "mother" pulled me out of a car throwing me to the asphalt road forcefully enough that it broke my elbow very badly. This time they were forced to take me to a hospital because my arm wasn't functional. My "mother" left me there at the hospital as soon as my grandparents arrived and they stayed for x-rays and surgery to put metal pins in my elbow.
This is the tip of the iceberg. In my experience the S.D.A. religion fosters disfunction and abuse. Especially towards children.
I'm nearly 40 years old now. I've only fully escaped my family roughly 4-5 years ago.
I've written the first book of my real life experiences but it wasn't very good. I found it very difficult to go through this stuff and that definitely impacted the writing quality. Still I hope to write two more, even if they aren't that good.
I only want for them to help someone else. I thought telling my story might bring about some good if it helped even one person.
Light in the Corner by Bobbie Dunlap. It's on Amazon.
Many clusters of S.D.A. religion still functioning today. Including their main "medical" center in California. It still boggles my mind that they get away with so many harmful practices even today.
Wow that is absolutely horrific! You have my respect and sympathy and hope you are in a much better place today. Were charges ever brought against your abuser? I see your book! You are beautiful too I might add! I’ll definitely read it on kindle thanks for sharing your story with us and the world.

I really appreciate the respect and kindness you put into these videos and thank you for showing your emotions too. Sometimes I feel that a lot of us who enjoy true crime can become numb and jaded to all the awfulness that comes with them; so thank you for showing that thats not true. You have great respect towards these people that have had to endure this horrific shit.

I learned about this case in highschool too probably like 15 years ago! (French canadian from Qc here) We heard the testimony from a woman who’s daughter got caught up in this cult. It was a horrible story :(

I can't handle it when children are involved. It fills me with so much rage. It isn't that I don't care about the adults, but imagine being dragged into this cult by your moronic parents, or being born into it, and through no fault of your own suffering through all this hideous treatment. Some people are irredeemable, just evil.
Well said
The thing is that people who join cults and fall for it are not necessarily morons, or even have any mental problems. Cult leaders want people who are good workers and have a lot of money so they can work etc while the leader does his thing. Normal everyday people fall for it.
I agree. If the adults are idiot enough to follow these weird freaks then they get what they deserve but putting children into the mix is a whole nother thing. These women that allow their children to be abused, molested and killed are the worst kind of females.
You took the words right out of my mouth! As a mother every crime against children is just so hard to endure!

This exactly! I even had to pause the video for a while, thats never happened to me.
My god you were right about how disturbing this was…I’m Canadian and I never heard about this. Tbh I’ve been trying to stay away from true crime and make up because I don’t find it totally respectful the way some people do it (eg. Making jokes, pausing to talk about makeup, telling the story incorrectly w/o bothering to correct it or claim that they aren’t sure, etc.) but I think you told it in a very respectful way and the makeup didn’t distract from the story nor did anything else. Thank you for telling it the way you did.

Not that others aren’t as important, but you gotta walk before you can run.

I’m not sure why, but this reminds me a lot about the Japan Cult Aum Shinrikyo run by Shoko Asahara, and it’s been said to be Japan’s most evil cult. There were TV appearances, thousands of members both in Japan and the rest of the world, and they’re even responsible for the Subway attack in 1995, which was considered to be Japan’s worst attack since World War 2. It’s definitely a case you should look into, but be warned - some of what Shoko Asahara had done during his time as a cult leader is beyond sadistic and evil.
Gonna go research this!

I’m a little worried about Danielle, as she does tend to get very emotionally involved in her cases. I can only imagine this taking it’s toll on her own mental health after a while. Instead of letting her emotions tell the story, maybe it would be better to just stick to the facts as a way of self preservation 🤷🏼♀️ To distance herself from her own feelings so as not to be effected more than necessary, because let’s face it, researching some of these cases would have a huge impact on anyone’s mental health. I know I couldn’t do it.
Precisely Donna and well said.

This story says a lot about the strength of the human mind, for people to have endured that type of torture CONSISTENTLY. I couldn't help but enjoy the ending. No blaze of glory, just one roommate who got tired of his shit.
They must have been suffering from extreme mental health issues that helped them survive it somehow. I heard that people who experience severe trauma can feel like their own body doesn't belong to them, to protect themselves from unbearable situations.
I am not an expert, but I am trying to describe disassociation.
It must be hell on earth to live with such memories, maybe getting flashbacks from them for years or for your entire life.
That's both impressive, and mostly very, very sad. Something like that just should not happen, anywhere, ever. And I hope that the world will get better at preventing it.

Okay, never gonna condone a murder, but "that piece of shit is down, here's the knife, I've sliced him up" was definitely music to my ears, and probably to the guards' ears as well

I’m Canadian and this is my first time hearing of him. Seems like Canada does a good job of sweeping things under the rug …. Just like with the residential schools - we never learned about them growing up
I actually did learn about residential schools growing up , so at least schools are getting better at talking about and acknowledging Canada’s dark history.
@@cianabee7216 what's a resusential school?
@@thejohn6614 residential schools were developed to separate indigenous children from their families, in order to undermine their culture and turn these children into cookie cutter* aka white* “canadians” in hopes they would marry into white society and physically breed the Indigenous culture and physical traits out of Canada. many children were abused physically and sexually, and we’re still finding enormous hidden grave sites where they buried the children in unmarked graves. The Catholic Church had a large role in this and so did the RCMP- the RCMP would physically remove the children from their families and move them to terrible nun ran boarding schools where their hair was shaved, they were not allowed to speak their own language or participate in any of their cultural practices, and Catholicism was forced on them. Sometimes these kids were returned to their parents eventually once they “got rid of the Indian in the child”, some were not. The last residential school was open until the 90’s so it’s not even very historical. Ironically, I went to catholic school growing up, and they did teach about residential schools, but I do live in one of the most progressive places in Canada, so maybe that’s why. The Indian Act(they haven’t even changed the name) is still in practice in Canada despite it being incredibly racist- but that’s a more complex issue, because it also is the act that protects treaty rights.

I'm from Québec, Canada and I would say it depends on the age group. Gabrielle (one of the cult members) wrote a book following her escape and the arrest, so for my generation (50's + years old) this story is well known.
