Hi my name is Danielle, welcome to my True Crime and Makeup series! I’ve been interested in true crime for the longest time now, what started with me watching true crime on TV with my Nan from a young age eventually turned into studying for a degree in Law & Criminology.
When I first watched Bailey Sarian’s series I was completely hooked, I loved how she had combined two of the things I’m most passionate about and delivered it so well. She totally inspired me to take the leap and do the same thing on my channel, so all credit for the idea goes 100% to her.
I’m from the UK and will be covering cases from both the UK and internationally, let me know if there are any cases that you’d like to see from me! More cases will be coming soon so please subscribe if you enjoyed this video!

I actually grew up in the area where Roch had set up his commune toward the end. We were all told to stay away from any men driving a big blue van...my father had a blue van at the time and looks similar to Roch, so he was actually brought in for questioning! Flash forward about 15 years, my younger sister starts dating this boy with piercing blue eyes...turns out, he is Roch's son, who can be seen as an infant in group photos of the commune from back then. This case hits very close to home for me.

I grew up in the small town next to Burnt River and I remember this story quite clearly. It was well known what was going at their compound but for some reason the police never wanted to get involved until they absolutely had to. As a child I remember the women would walk around town and sell their pies. My mother always bought one because she felt sorry for them but she would immediately throw it out. When we would see Roch in town my mother would make us cross the street. It’s true what the women say about his eyes. There was something about them and even as a young child I could feel him looking right through you into your soul. He was creepy af but weirdly mesmerizing by the way he walked slowly and proudly like he was God. When he was on the run for 6 weeks it was always believed he was never far from the commune. I know someone who snuck in there one night while Roch was still missing and he said he felt like he was being watched the entire time from the woods. Such a sad and disturbing story that is so hard to comprehend.

I'm from Quebec, Canada, and Roch Thériault is DEFINITELY well-known. I've grown up with this story and I have vivid memories of my mom and my older sister reading the book by Gabrielle Lavallée and being traumatized by it. I've came across videos where they talked about the "Ant Hill Kids" cult and I didn't connect the two together because Quebec is french-speaking so we never use that expression to talk about this cult. Glad to see a french-canadian case getting some coverage and props to your pronunciation of Thériault !
PS You are right to say he is one of the most well-known criminal in Canadian history. I even saw his walking cane on display in a museum lol

It makes sense if you think about it.
Abusers do what they do because they want to control the people around them at all costs. That's why almost all abusers are extremely charming to people who are in their outer orbit, because charm gets you a lot when you aren't super close to someone. Plus, being charming is an excellent way to insulate themselves from abuse accusations when they ultimately do leak out.
The second that being funny and effusive and charming stops working, they move on to the next tactic. Whether it be psychological manipulation, scare tactics like breaking things and screaming, using isolation or finances to keep their victim trapped, or actually getting violent, whatever they need to do to gain control, they will do it. They will even set themselves up in a way that helps them justify their tactics. For example, my ex was only ever physically violent towards me when he was drunk, but once I got out from the relationship I realized that what actually happened was he would drink in order to be physically violent.
Cult leaders do the exact same thing, just on a bigger scale. It's all about controlling other people in order to meet their wants, whether that be money, sex (often with minors), fame, an audience for their ramblings, etc etc etc.

I actually watched a documentary on this same cult. The gentleman who had been castrated absolutely regretted what he did. There was also a gentleman that was brought in by his girlfriend who was part of the cult and he started seeing signs that things were not okay. He managed to escape and begged her to come with him. She refused. I just can't imagine how one person can have this much control over multiple people. When you said he prayed on weak individuals... that's what made sense.

I'm from Quebec and I've heard of this case! I can understand why other Canadians haven't heard of it, we're pretty individualistic as a province and tend to see ourselves as a bit of an outcast. There's also the language barrier, plus back then I think a lot of local news didn't tend to make it past the provincial level since information wasn't as readily available everywhere. We have a few pretty well-known cases that wouldn't ring any bells to someone outside of Quebec. Pretty wild to see something I've heard of growing up covered like this!

Some people want so desperately to have a religious group to belong to, somewhere they feel spiritually uplifted, and they fall in with false prophets like this joker. Religion is a powerful driving force for many people, so if they genuinely believe that someone is divinely blessed, if they believe they speak for God... they'd go to such horrible extremes for them. :(

We had that whole week where we watched documentaries and movies about school shootings including but not limited to the Polytechnique shootings, cults documentary (this one and Raël, a French one) and all that stuff. @@joannewolftail5773 What is a contract worth if you were manipulated into signing it? As she described, many of those people just need help, they are vulnerable, they have no clue what to do with their lives and they believe that the leader would help them.
I had a tough childhood with lots of mental health stuff going on with my mother, my sister and myself, and both my mother and my sister were obsessed for a while with some random evangelical churches. It was luckily not the same thing, but it made them feel better and I already found it creepy enough for the standards where I am from.
Why I didn't fall for it? Not because I was "better" or anything, I had just always been into logic and science so no matter how great something sounded and how sad I was, I didn't just believe things with no proof.
So what, some people have minds that work differently. My family members are really compassionate and intelligent people. They went/are going through higher education. They were just hurting at that time and longing for some comfort. And even if other people aren't that intelligent, do they deserve to suffer because of the way their brains work?
In my opinion, victims, as the name already says, are absolutely not to blame. You should try to protect yourself as best as you can, but a crime is still a crime. Manipulation is manipulation, and it is wrong, even if it is hard to stop all kinds of cult leaders from doing it.
I bet, if everyone of these victims had a charismatic partner instead, who supports them throughout their lives, they could both appear normal and be happy.

    I was raised S.D.A.
My "mother" held my hand on a wood burning stove when I was 3. They didn't take me to a hospital but to my grandmother instead. She used the S.D.A. home remedies on it. I believe my grandmother always wanted to escape it protect us but she was always so scared also. She had taken Polaroids of the injury to save for evidence. I didn't know about this until she showed me when I was nearly 30 years old. It had burnt so badly you could see all the tiny bones of my hand through the thin layer of skin that was left.
Six months after this incident my "mother" pulled me out of a car throwing me to the asphalt road forcefully enough that it broke my elbow very badly. This time they were forced to take me to a hospital because my arm wasn't functional. My "mother" left me there at the hospital as soon as my grandparents arrived and they stayed for x-rays and surgery to put metal pins in my elbow.
This is the tip of the iceberg. In my experience the S.D.A. religion fosters disfunction and abuse. Especially towards children.
I'm nearly 40 years old now. I've only fully escaped my family roughly 4-5 years ago.
I've written the first book of my real life experiences but it wasn't very good. I found it very difficult to go through this stuff and that definitely impacted the writing quality. Still I hope to write two more, even if they aren't that good.
I only want for them to help someone else. I thought telling my story might bring about some good if it helped even one person.
Light in the Corner by Bobbie Dunlap. It's on Amazon.
Many clusters of S.D.A. religion still functioning today. Including their main "medical" center in California. It still boggles my mind that they get away with so many harmful practices even today.

Instead of letting her emotions tell the story, maybe it would be better to just stick to the facts as a way of self preservation 🤷🏼‍♀️ To distance herself from her own feelings so as not to be effected more than necessary, because let’s face it, researching some of these cases would have a huge impact on anyone’s mental health. It must be hell on earth to live with such memories, maybe getting flashbacks from them for years or for your entire life.

The Catholic Church had a large role in this and so did the RCMP- the RCMP would physically remove the children from their families and move them to terrible nun ran boarding schools where their hair was shaved, they were not allowed to speak their own language or participate in any of their cultural practices, and Catholicism was forced on them. Sometimes these kids were returned to their parents eventually once they “got rid of the Indian in the child”, some were not. The last residential school was open until the 90’s so it’s not even very historical. Ironically, I went to catholic school growing up, and they did teach about residential schools, but I do live in one of the most progressive places in Canada, so maybe that’s why. The Indian Act(they haven’t even changed the name) is still in practice in Canada despite it being incredibly racist- but that’s a more complex issue, because it also is the act that protects treaty rights.

I grew up in a cult as well and it really is surreal to hear about some other cults after those experiences. I feel very fortunate that I got out and didn't suffer as much as some cult members have in some of the stories I've heard. I went through years of therapy/recovery and life is actually really good for me now. Glad to hear you got out

@@rebekahmartinez5394 I don't know if you listen to true crime a lot but cps does not have a good track record. If anything they have sometimes put kids in similarly worse homes and pretended to 'check in' on the kids. Some good cps workers exist but the vast majority aren't doing what they are supposed. They weren't gonna pop up over there. Those babies were doomed.
