And in English seaside resorts, amidst their tackiness, the buckets and spades, ice creams, families bumping into each other on the sand, teenagers lumping a football around, the screams and shouts, the amusement arcades and fairground rides on the pier, amidst all that, I recall this song of Abba's breaking over the promenade and the beach, in a low-key way, but audible, and I recall feeling that everything was cool, the beat of this track somehow indicating the temporal nature of time and the warm weather front, never to really last. Abba's music breaking out like that, in such a place, at such a time, added a dash of glamour, and a dash of Scandinavian cool such as it was to the good day out at the seaside. Alas! The Seventies were soon to end.
