Calling a chinese character a chinese name wow how very racist.
Ah yes, my very chinese character... What name shall she have?
Chingching chong
A very chinese name, THE MOST chinese name *in fact* *THE ONLY CHINESE NAME*
Problem with that, Cho Chang is only vaguely Korean, and even then both parts of the name are typically surnames that don't really work together and makes it seem like the author did the bare minimum of research for the names. Also, both parts of Cho Chang's name are Korean, while the character is canonically Chinese, which is kind of a cultural faux pas due to the cultural conflict between the two regions. Basically, China has a history of stealing traditionally Korean stuff and market it as their own.
It's not the first time J.K. Rowling butchered an East Asian name before, the Japanese magic school, Mahoutokoro, is literally Japanese for Magical Place.

yeah fair
Also is it racist for Asian Americans to have a Asian name like what should her name have been generic white name like. She gave a Asian descended character a Asian name. So if u see a Asian man name Cho I should tell him he racist for using a Asian name u Asian man. Like this is the kind of shit the people in power want for people to call things that clearly on racism racism. I honestly dont understand why people are so angry over the name thing, i guess they expect all the characters to have american names. Im irish and is say 80% of the people i lnow have irish names like Ciara, Seamus, Niamh etc.
In America, people are thinking that if you give people a name from their own culture, then you are "stereotyping" them, whereas if you give them a name like Peter Smith, then apparently that's better. Because... reasons? It's nonsense as far as I'm concerned.
I love it when non-asians get offended in behalf of asians to be their “savior”. If I were writing a Chinese character and named her Li Li…they would get offended because it would look like two surnames. What they don’t know is that Chinese language is governed by tones and not by spelling. My wife is originally from Lanzhou China. Before marriage her name was Li Li. Each of the Li’s are pronounced with a slightly different inflection which differentiates the characters and meanings in Mandarin but when written in English, they are the same. I don’t think she picked names like Cho Chang as a way to make fun of Asian people. I imagine that she probably just didn’t want to spend that much time coming up with character names and focus on the more important aspects of the book.
Plus she likes alliterative names, like Severus Snape, Gellery Grindelwald, Godrick Griffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, etc.

I always thought the last name ShackleBolt was a nod to him basically being a wizard cop? Like he locks people up in Azkaban.
That's a fair assessment actually.
Shackle as a surname and it’s variant forms come from north England meaning ‘valley with a point/tongue of land’. The name Shackleton, Shackledene, Shacklesey, Shackelle, etc come from this original English of shackle noted in the doomsday book
Clearly you are not a writer. If i was her (and i am pretty sure she did this) you google to find the most common names for the years your chatacters are born, then you pick names in the list. So it makes sense why background characters like Seamus and Cho have common names. Also it helps the reader picture the character, if Seamus was called "John Smith" and only mentioned as irish once, you likely would never picture/remember him as irish.
Also she wrote the first book in the 90's.
@@Sirapa7 there's baby books, but I imagine she was like "what's an Irish name" and thought of one she knew. There's not really a full way of knowing if it is most common name etc.

Proof that JK Rowling is a good person
In 1999 a girl named Natalie McDonald was going through lukimia treatment and one of the only sorces of happiness to her was reading harry Potter and when it was clear that she wouldn't make it all she wanted was to live long enough to know how the series ended but at the time prisoner of Azkaban was the last book out so when Natalie's mother found out she sent an email to JK Rowling asking wether there was something that could be done, even tho JK was on a holiday leave she decided to sent her unfinished manuscript for the 4th, 5th and 6th book in the series and the plot out line forth the 7th book but unfortunately Natalie died one day before these arrived, after her death tho JK Rowling invited Natalie's friends to a meet and greet and stayed close to Natalie's family, she also named a first year characters after Natalie McDonald in "harry Potter and the goblet of fire" and her character got sorted in Gryffindor (quote : "applauding as "McDonald, Natalie!" joined the Gryffindor table")
And please let's not forget that JK didn't have to do anything
The fact that this entire discourse can be traced to a tumblr post from a decade ago…pathetic lmao.
Oh the humanity, she named characters appropriately to their ethnicity😱
THE ONLY ONE? BE FR, Angelina Thomas, lee Jordan, Dean Thomas, etc. Do your research.
I love how after people asked her if their were any Jewish characters, she said that their was someone named "Anthony Goldstein," which is like an American guy being named Abraham Freedom
We also need to consider when the books were written because I’m pretty sure that inclusion of different races was still not all that normalized.
'Lot of people' seem to need to go traveling, they'd see how perfectly normal those names actually are
Fair enough!
I feel like the only real way to end an argument like this. Is ask people actually of the race of JK Rowling character, and see if they find it racist.
This is a great point.
My parents are racist for giving me an italian first name. . SO HORRIble!
People are jealous of Rowling's success😂
People are defending Cho Chang’s name, but come on now. It’s obvious that she was raised if not born in Britain. She has a Scottish accent and everything. Besides, she was hinted to be Chinese (as if it’s the only east asian country but whatever) but then names the character after 2 Korean last names.
Imagine they call the only Canadian character “Caoimhe Duffy” which is an Irish name. Or they call the only African kid “Dikembe Adisa”.
It’s like JK Rowling didn’t even do any research. Most immigrant parents give their children an English name so that they won’t get picked on and/or discriminated against by their peers. Also, JK Rowling literally made like every asian student except for Parvati a Ravenclaw (aka the house for smart nerds). Y’all really don’t see anything wrong with this?
But I mean, what is the matter? It is like complaining a Mexican character is called "Juan Pérez" despite the fact that it is a really common name in Mexico. Yes, it may be generic and shows little imagination in my opinio , but where is the racism?
Edit: And I hadn't thought about the ravenclaw question, I agree that it reinforces an stereotype, but I would say that comes not from a desire to hurt since tbw being intelligent is not bad, I think those stereotypes are more just out of ignorance, but we have all sinned of ignorance, so to say. I don't see J.K being racists, she's transphobic and that is a shame and I hope she would rectify, but let's not being unfair and blame her for thing she's not.
@@Studiosmediamilk I’m not trying to say that she is a shitty human being or a racist since I obviously don’t know the woman personally. It’s just ignorant on her part. He literally named a Chinese character after two Korean last names which is just kinda funny actually. I’m sure she didn’t mean to hurt anyone, and yes, people are way to sensitive nowadays, but come on. Same thing with Parvati and Padma. They are walking stereotypes.

Bruh, I’m so dumb lol
I went to school with Chinese girls and they had Chinese names even though born in England 😂😂
Quite a few countries that are in the same geographical area and have languages that will have stemmed from a root source are going to have similar common last names.
Also I go to school with many girls who clearly have heritage from outside the UK, and many of their names are not British. I realise that it may differ in different areas, but to say that immigrant families will name their children with names from the country they immigrated to is clearly incorrect. Regardless of whether or not she was raised and born in Britain, her name can still be from outside the English language. There is no logic in your argument.
You're also basing your 'obviously raised in Britain', 'obviously born in Britain', 'has a Scottish accent' thing on the films. J.K.Rowling wrote the books, and I don't believe it says Cho had a Scottish accent there; sure, J.K.R. had some sway in the casting in the film production, but they casting crew and her were probably more concerned about getting characters to look like their book descriptions than sound like them.
These books were written for kids. Giving a character a name that matched their ethnicity helped kids remember them. Also Dean was black.
I'm tired of listening to people bash on Joanne. She just wrote some good fantasy books and people are upset because.... why? Is it some sort of trend to accuse people of racism and homophobia? This is getting ridiculous. She just wrote a few books about a specky wizard and people have got problems with it now. Why? It doesn't make sense. Joanne has done nothing wrong, and everyone should open their eyes and realise that the reason there's a problem is because they made it, not Joanne.
Don't whine like that people, they're just movies😒😒
Nothing wrong with the names. Just people projecting their own biases.
There's like 0.0001% chance anything slavery related was going through her head when she thought up Shacklebolt. She just wanted names rhat popped and helped young readers visualize and remember the characters
That's a fair assessment.
Shacklebolt was not the only black character. There was Blaise Zabini, Dean Thomas, and Lee Jordan. There may be more but I forgot.
The problem with these names though is that it's very racially charged and race-specific names. That's why it is racist. The names should be both racially neutral and gender neutral to avoid offending. An example of a race-neutral name would be Amo Zæ, or Kirsty Āgtgtgwenqqœ, or Yoddlé Lélé, which would be seen as more diverse and inclusive.
