My hunting pack is a sawtooth 45 from MR. It uses this frame system and man, it’s stout. Last fall I harvested a white tail doe, and packed it out after after a quick field dress. Dressed weight of the deer was about 130 lbs. Add to that rifle, a couple of layers, and water, and it was loaded (yeah, I know, I should have quartered, dumb dumb moment on my part). The point is, this frame system carries a load extremely well!

Now that you have experience with the Terraframe 50, Terraframe 65 and Bridger 65. I’m curious what you would use each pack for and if you have a go-to favorite out of those three packs. I’m sold on Mystery Ranch. Solid build…an extra two pounds but I think the durability is worth it if you’re playing around in rocky areas.

Thanks again Eric for promoting Mystery Ranch! I’ve told you before that you are the reason why I bought one…Sphinx 60. I’ve had it for almost 2 years and it is Amazing! I used it on a 6 day trip in the high Rockies and it was perfect! It was stuffed to the gills, but absolutely perfect! I feel I can take this pack anywhere on any trip and it will hold all the gear I need for a comfortable trip! Thanks again!

I have the Terraframe 50 Tri-Zip for the load hauling capability and if I'm doing a cold weather overnighter or a family trip where I need to carry extra gear. Their external frame is amazing, and can carry some serious weight; far more than I'd ever want to.

This video was the deciding factor for me. Ive been using a 36 hour assault pack for the last 6 years in the CA mountains, and it works, but man does it wear out my back, and after 40 pounds, it becomes REALLY unweildy
To also play umbridge, the buckles, snaps, and straps are all standard 1 inch, which means all of th3 tactical gear i know and love just simply snaps onto the pack. Its genius!

Great review! Before Mystery Ranch there was Dana Design. The same designer at Mystery Ranch. I have a Dana Design Astral Plane that I bought in Alaska around 1990 for Backpacking and Mountaineering.30 years old and still going strong. No issues what so ever. I even purchased a used one for my son in Bishop Ca. ten years ago . No issues there either. I paid $320 in 1990 which was a lot of money back then. $400 is a bargain. Spend the money and enjoy your backpack for a lifetime.

Nice review, I got this same pack a year ago (in black) and absolutely love it. It's a hybrid pack that is mostly for backpacking but also can be used for hunting and load hauling. Was having a hard time adjusting the girth length on the backpack but when you showed me on your video that piece of plastic, a lightbulb went off in my head and made it really easy. Great video haven’t had a chance to try out the backpack yet but it looks really good even though I don’t carry heavy loads. I bought it because of comfort that was my main reason.

I love buying mystery ranch. I love their gear and their worth every single penny. Beginner or advance if u have a few extra bucks don't pass it up. Mystery ranch Terra frame may weigh 5lbs but it carries like a Cadillac escalade. The weight doesn't matter so much..it's how the pack carries the weight. An ultralight light thin frame pack usually will carry awful and give u no room to go heavier if needed. But a pack like this u can go light medium heavy whatever. It'll carry it properly and so smooth. Debunk the ultralight movement.

    • @snubblebubble4937

I totally agree! I'm going to be getting a MR pack as soon as I can afford it! I got to try on the Bridger 55 in store and it was like wearing a cloud! Absolutely amazing!
I currently have a Deuter aircontact lite, which is a good pack but the hip belt bruises my hips something nasty every time I use it.
I also tried out a hyperlite mountain gear pack and it was super uncomfortable. The hip belt didn't cinch down well enough, so a lot of weight was on my shoulders, and it doesn't have load lifters. I had about 35-40 pounds of gear in it though because I needed cold weather gear and I had to carry 5 liters of water, which is probably more stuff than it is designed to hold comfortably. I can see how it would be okay with 10-15 pounds but I'm not an ultra lighter.

I've had two models of this pack, the 65 liter version and the 80L version. They're different colors. If you had to choose between this and the Bridger, I'd lean towards Bridger. The reason is that the Terraframe is overkill for most backpackers. I think you can get a slightly lighter and simpler backpack that is still great at carrying heavy loads. The Bridger is the most comfortable backpack I've ever used.

Can't decide between the Terraframe or the Bridger 65L. Would you say this is as comfortable as the Bridger? So when you add heavy items into that area between the frame and the backpack, obviously it would shift the weight of the backpack further back, which would throw off the center of gravity, correct? I guess there's no ideal way to deal with more weight, it's just physics.

(6:38 into video) Vertically sliding shoulder harness does not change torso length because top of shoulder strap contact point with pack does not change as harness is pulled vertically up. This design just makes shoulder strap longer. Solution is to use load lifters to pull harness closer to back. More load lifter tension increases pressure making skin over collarbones sore on people with visible collarbone under skin.
I own Osprey Xenith 88 with same misleading torso adjustment design on shoulder harness. Fortunately Xenith 88 shortest torso length is my size so pack fits me well. Took me weeks to determine why I noticed no change moving harness farther from hip belt.
Better to have harness that slides vertically moving the top of shoulder strap contact point with pack closer or farther away from bottom of hip belt changing pack torso length.
Second undisclosed good design feature on Osprey Xenith 88 is that vertical frame is flexible and bends to act as vertical shock absorber reducing impact from each heel strike. Each heel strike during walking causes vertical compression through joints of ankle-knee-hip-discs between vertebrae from low back to top of shoulder trapezius muscle that holds up shoulders and pack shoulder straps.

For $400 you get the backers version of the Ninja Vegamatic do everything. The detachable fold down frame is hyped into a desirable feature. I don't know many that will pack out a quarter of an elk squeezed in their $400 pack. The KISS principle is a known useful engineering principle to keep the team on track to do the job at hand well. Just because you can drop it from 3000 feet out a plane does not make it a good tool to mark the landing point. Your milage may vary.

The thing I thought I'd love proved not to work for me...the yoke (running vest strap)...initially it starts with proper cushioning but soon becomes much thinner, so if you thought of using water bottle or bear spray in its shoulder strap pocket, think again. While doable, not comfy at all. On top of that (I know this is going to be highly subjective) the outside shoulder strap digs into my shoulders. Tried adjusting the torso length, but didn't help.

Eric do you find that the Bridger you tested last year solves your complaints about breathability?
I just got a Bridger in for testing myself, but the weather is so cold here right now that it's hard to judge how I'd feel in hot weather.

I just ordered the terraframe 65L, but I was strongly considering the Bridger. The bridger was sold out and the terraframe was on sale, and given the fact that I like hunting as well as backpacking, the terraframe seemed like the best choice for me. I would love to see a comparison of the two

Whats your favourite out of this pack and the bridger 65?
Heavy duty and heavy load rating for both please?
Whats the heaviest you have carries with these packs?
I've seen on your channel that you do carry heavy loads please :)

My favorite for general backpacking is the Bridger. But the Terraframe can really handle heavier loads, like 50+ pounds. Heaviest I've gone is two packrafting trips, probably around 55 pounds with rafts, PFD's, paddles, and camera gear. The Terraframe handled it like a champ.

I actually just used that feature on my last trip. I was packrafting and it was the perfect place to secure my wet water shoes and some other webbing and carabiners needed for our expedition.

Have a couple of MR packs. Have an issue on the Yoke- far from wide enough that it covers my shoulderblades, and just wide enough that it diggs into them.. Find myself shifting into bad posture just to get the shoulderblades out enough not to get chafing. Which isn't optimal for thing like breathing or spine.

Thanks a bunch for your reviews, they're among the best on YT! In regard to this particular clip, something leaves me doubting at 4:01... I don't understand the mechanism you're showing, and when not knowing anything about that bag, all I can see is that the tent would break something (if not your back around the lumbar region). It _looks_ utterly odd, as the half-demonstration is insufficient to say like _"Oh ok that's how it goes"_ (Secure the tent completely, and then wear the backpack so that we could have a clear idea about that unique and *important* feature). Anyways, thanks again.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  Před 2 lety +1

Hey! Thanks for the comment. It's Mystery Ranch's overload feature. You can put all sorts of gear here (I think it was designed with hunters in mind, who need to haul a bunch of meat out of the field). This doesn't affect your lumbar, as gear sits in between the frame of the pack and the bag. It feels the same to your back. It is kind of odd to demonstrate. Sorry it didn't quite explain it for you. I really like the feature when I need to carry really heavy loads, such as when I go packrafting and I haul a boat, paddles, a PFD, and extra gear.

It annoys the crap out of me that he says the word "backpack" over and over and over and over again. It's a pack. If he says "this backpack" one more time........"how does the stability stack up on THIS BACKPACK? Well, for THIS BACKPACK, unlike other BACKPACKS it has a lot of stability, which makes THIS BACKPACK unique in the world of BACKPACKS. That's one reason THIS BACKPACK is such a special BACKPACK".....

Hey Mark! I appreciate your opinion! No worries if it's not for you. Sometimes I carry the tent on the outside and sometimes I don't. It's a fun, useful feature for when my bag is getting heavy or I've got a particularly large load to carry.
