These are scenes from the latter years of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia - and it appears much of the footage has been shot around 1938-39.
The footage is full of street scenes, colonial lifestyles and 'orientalist' landscapes.

Very interesting. I assume that this was made using 16 mm reversal film which became available in the 1930s. Colour features films at that time such as The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind were made by the very complicated Technicolor process.
Andaikan saya sudah lahir di era video ini,nasib saya cuma jadi buruh tani di sawah. Karena hanya keturunan orang Jawa yang hidup di desa. Tapi saya salut meski menjajah secara ekonomi, Belanda membangun infrastruktur yang bagus dari listrik, kereta api, pabrik gula,sampai bangunan gedung gedung yang kokoh. Sama saja , penjajah tetap penjajah. coba baja Sejarah nasional Indonesia, dan banyak buku buku dari sejarawan yang nasionalis dan anti Barat. supaya luas sudut pandangmu. Kamu tahu infrastruktur itu dibangun demi kepentingan mereka, untuk transportasi ke pelabuhan, untuk segregasi wilayah, tonton Vox edisi Jakarta tenggelam. Belanda itu Bodoh. justru yg terlihat terbelakang terkadang malah eco friendly dan sustainable, tidak rakus sumber daya. perang ada, namun sedikit. bandingkan penjajahan dengan narasi sudut pandang historian barat yang sok menjadi pahlawan pembebasan, membangun tai kucing, tak usah berandai andai "tanpa mereka", "jikalau" lantas memuji kejahatan penjajahan. ribuan darah nenek moyang bangun infrastruktur, kejinya mereka bangun cadas pangeran, kejinya mereka membantai pecinan, mengadu domba etnis, dan kerajaan kerajaan.

Don't forget that the Dutch did not have all of the East Indies. After the Japanese left there was a fight for freedom 'Merdeka' started by Sukarno. It cost many people their lives, both Dutch and Indie inhabitants. It was a most cruel war which ended in 1949 when Indonesia got independent.

without Holland conquering the territory Indonesia would be bunch of poor and backward different states... at least they brought some modernization to the country and unification of all the different tribes...things happened for a reason, Holland maybe cruel to its colonial natives but that's what brought us together in hard times :) and without them you wouldn't even be born now. It was also thanks to them that the population starts to enjoy enlightenment, industrialization, women emancipation (Kartini and her Dutch friends makes this happen) and modern way of thinking and life to the country.. unfortunately colonialism is impossible to avoid during the time too and even China bend to the western world at the time and is merely shell of its old glory that were once the most powerful force in Asia, it was the western world that brought China to its modernity and advancement despite all the opium evil plot,, only country like Japan who adopted western ideology and copying loads of the things they do that Japan advances into a superly industrialized country (similar to the way China did today) that eventually managed to wrestle the pacific from the western power. And thanks to them the western power actually seen as weak and vulnerable that its former colony started to broke up and revolted against the colonial masters..
And i personally don't like all the wishy washy propaganda about the cruelness and Indonesia winning all the war while actually was losing blah3 too much crap... Dutch rule maybe cruel but even after it was ruled by the Indonesian themself the country is not all innocent (Suharto's grand communist purge and his corruption that makes him one of the richest man of the world is brilliant example, and what about super nationalist Indonesian butchering Dutch women and children and really you would justify killing INNOCENT women and children because they're Dutch? same applies for Dutch soldiers when they massacre a village yes you Dutch are just as evil and please don't play innocent), all country have bad history..And it wasn't because of the Dutch that Indonesia remains poor, it was because of the Indonesian themself fools :P actually with the country unified now we have great potential but we let ourself to be led by corrupt selfish people and blinded by nationalism...
Ohh and the reason why Indonesia was easily colonized was because it was never unified as one as today, it was small states and kingdoms on separate islands. It was because the islands were weak and fought with each other for their own greed that helps the Dutch easily crushed the small states too. Dutch colonialism is nothing to be proud about, and im not saying that we should be appreciating things, but there's also reason why we should hate our own history, there are bad things but also good things..

To Ginny - Did not Indonesia have widespread poverty and poor infrastructure, both physical and social, under Dutch rule? No colonial power can honestly say that their colonisation was entirely or even principally altruistic. They were there to exploit the locals and make money. According my hubby Dutch speaking Indos (Mixed Indonesian Dutch parents) speak better Dutch than a lot of Dutch people themselves. They had a good education system.
Okay, obviously atrocities have been committed which is inexcusable. But I'd like to get some opinions on what you guys think the Dutch should have done when they encountered what is now Indonesia?
Should they have left well enough alone (remember that even if no other colonial powers at the time would have moved in, this might mean there would not today be a modern Indonesia)?
How would they have prevented insurrections? And how should they have reacted to insurrections if those did occur? Is it possible to be a colonial power and still be moral?

After the Java War 1825-1830, the Dutch implemented Cultuurstelsel from 1830-1900 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultivation_System). This policy has been able to quickly overcome the Dutch financial losses during the Java War. Supposedly, when Java (and Sumatra) had generated large financial resources through various plantation industries, the Netherlands immediately made efforts to improve the quality of life of the indigenous people through extensive modern/western education. In fact, it only started in 1901 through the Ethische Politiek (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Ethical_Policy) and stopped in 1930 due to the global financial crisis. Besides that, the Dutch people's racist mentality towards native people must also be stopped earlier (historibersama.com/racism-in-the-dutch-east-indies-tirto/). If these two things were done, maybe Japan would not easily conquer the Dutch East Indies because the majority of the native people trusted the Dutch more so they would be persistent in defending the Dutch East Indies, and at this time Indonesia would be more advanced and we would still be together in a commonwealth.
At first they just wanted to piss off the Spanish and Portuguese. Not to start a colonial empire.

We used to be one nation from Sumatra to Papua called Nusantara. Before the Dutch colonized Indonesia, the nations around the Himalayan mountains flocked to conquer and colonize the archipelago, which left the archipelago divided because of the many colonizing nations, each colonizer building their own kingdom. We became independent after colonial nations fought each other, such as China, Uzbek, Khazak, Tajik, India and others. However, the archipelago did not immediately unite, each establishing a kingdom. "But our prophet prophesied that one day a white people would come who would unite you again." So the Netherlands is just a cause and effect for us, and God has paid the Netherlands with wealth, and that wealth was taken back through the hands of Germany and Japan which left the Netherlands battered.
