    One of the T-bred farms I worked, they had a small 2 horse trailer, and took out the divider. They padded the inside and that’s how they teased mares. They would pull up to the barn with him and we would lead the mares to him. Even the ramp had padding on it to protect the mares.

  • @christofeles63
    @christofeles63 Před 5 lety +16

    Fascinating. Is the stomping and flaring by the stallion typical 'teasing' behavior? It seems quite aggressive. You see Arabians do it all the time in promotion videos, even in the absence of other horses. Is the display just an expression of heightened arousal by a temperamental breed or a form of ritualized aggression?

      Stallions flaring, squealing and posturing is all calculated. If the mare reacts by striking or kicking at the stallion after he tries to impress her, he realizes she's not in heat and moves on. If she is receptive, the stallion should calm down and then two different things can happen. If they're free pastured and untethered, the stallion will woo the mare by nibbling on her neck and by making other calming gestures before trying to mount. If humans are attached to the horses, and the stallion is bred with people assisting then he'll go straight from the teasing wall to mounting. Arabians are rather dramatic, noisy, reactive horses so they get the blue ribbon for squealing and snorting, but this is still normal breeding behavior.

    • @RedBev59
      @RedBev59 Před 5 lety +8

      this is how a stallion flirts. He means no harm to her. BUT his behavior shows her that he likes her. SHE likes him too the way she doesn't take her eyes off him AND no kicking. BUT now a days they hold onto a lead line with Both mare and stallion. too risky turning them loose. VERY risky. Mares do kick ALOT as you could see with the scar on his chest. And if they kick out and get the knee's.......he's done for. So they don't mind if humans are at the end of the line. Long as they get it. I felt bad they walked her away......she didn't want to go cause she was ready for him........and he was probably confused that HE got walked away. Seeing them breed is no big deal. We can handle it. I hope he and she got together after they finished videoing the teasing part. lol poor boy. It LOOKS more scary and dangerous than it is BUT horses are huge.......so best to stand aside.

      @@RedBev59 usually, the teaser stallion is only ever the best man, not the groom. Most stud farms only use a stallion to have a clear idea of her ovulation cycle and she’ll be artificially inseminated, and if the stallion is lucky he’ll get some side jobs to do what’s natural, but not the highly prized mares who are basically foal incubators. Many horse owning individuals let their lead stallion mingle with their mares all year in pasture with the expected foals or if not, foals can be the results of fence jumpers. On stud farms though it’s strictly business to breed only the best bloodlines and from approved stallions to create a high class and very expensive prodigy. It’s simply an industry.

      Most likely a self inflicted wound due to frustration. Spring is a hard time for studs, especially when they are withheld from mares in heat. They tend to bite themselves, bang their heads on walls and fences or even bust their legs kicking out due to frustration. Restraint only makes this behaviour worse. Safety is priority when working with stallions and only should experienced handlers handle them. It's important to work the stallion through their hormones, rather than let them be ruled by them. Lots of mental stimulation and exercise can help.

      You do that with your horses and when you are having to shoot your stallion because the mare who isn't in season has kicked his knee or jaw and broke it, or when she's caused him internal bleeding and he's dying slowly it will become obvious to you why tease walls are a thing.

    This is cruel to the mare. She can't kick to reject the stallion. The rubber does not keep her from being upset that she can't move to do her job. This is a useless exercise created by men. Horses don't need that to reproduce.
