    Ness giving a real talk here. I've been an artist for several years now and I still have issues with confidence. I realize a lot of it comes from my own way of thinking. I tend to tell myself:
    - "I didn't go to an art school" instead of telling myself "I have a lot of work experience"; or
    - "my art style isn't as good as *insert big time artist's name here*" instead of "I have my own art style and I know how to play off on my strengths"; or
    - "No one will hire me if I charge that much" instead of "I know my art is worth that much."
    I've recently started cold calling/emailing publishing companies and agencies. Right now, my expectations are just, "well, if they put me on file, that gives me more than 0% of getting work." lol.

    🙋I do. And that is why I put the word "artist" in my channel name. Though doing that made me super self conscious, lol. but lately I've had this still small voice whispering, "You're an artist!" 😋 My motto is "Be kind to your art." 🙌 Love the tips! ❤

    Hi Vanessa! I struggling with idea, that it is not possible to monetize botanical illustration. I've made several and finally I give up drawing in this ganre. And also it is defenetily about me, that I was drawing for "likes" on the Instargam and the most surprising thing is that simple watercolor drawing get more likes than some difficult and more effort work and it was also disappoted me. That is why I decided try to study illustrations. Thank you so much for your videos! They really help to begginers to undestand the kitchen of illustration!

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před rokem +1

      It is absolutely possible to monetize botanical art!! You just have to really think about who will need that kind of art. It's not ideal for picture books because there is no story. But it's perfect for decorative purposes like patterned fabrics and wallpapers, and art prints! It's all about finding a good fit. If you offer Polish sausages to a vegetarian, they will of course refuse. But that wouldn't mean that your sausages are bad quality, or even that no one in the world is interested in Polish sausages :)

    I often wonder why so many of us are lacking confidence in their speech about themselves. It's just as off putting as a compliment when someone tells you "you're so good, I could never do that". Like folks should look a different way at this. You do what you love, if you get rejected that person wouldn't be a person you want to work for anyway.

    I have a lot of self doubt issues. I have a portfolio that I think is quite decent, but I'm hesitant to send it to publishers. Thinking about it, I realize it is because I'm not afraid of they telling me 'no', but I'm afraid of them telling me 'yes, please work for us'. Does that make any sense to you? 😟 It's hard to break that barrier, but I'll try

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 2 lety +1

      That's interesting! And yes I can understand, at the beginning it's really scary to do jobs at the professional level. Our brains are wired to help us survive, maintain the status quo. It's telling us: "You're alive right now, that's pretty good! Don't go and risk it by trying something new and scary! That's out of our league!!" Our brain is wrong, of course. If a publisher hires you, clearly they think you can do the job. And life is about thriving, not just surviving! If working professional with publisher is what you dream to do, don't let your brain stop you :) We all have to do that scary first job, but it gets easier after.

    People have said for soo long "oh, you should make childrens books", I have somewhat found I have listened to it, I like the idea, I like making illustrations, I have also had a few small projects, so I can absolutely call myself 'illustrator'. I'm still interested in making illustrations for books, but feel like I don't have to right knowledge to do it. Question, is it the right way to go or what do I want to do with my art...?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 2 lety

      Hi Linnea! The only way you can know for sure if books are the right path for you is to try it out :) Just pondering the question in your head can only get you so far. You say you don't have the right knowledge to do it, so why not start with some online classes? SVSlearn.com has great and affordable children's books classes, so does Skillshare. This is a good start to acquire new skills and start figuring out if this is what you want to do :) I've found that acting is always more efficient than wondering to figure ourselves out!

    i'm very interested in your boot camp. I have been an art teacher for 10 years and have a studio art degree +art teacher degrees and certifications. My question about your boot camp is this: is it about making art or the business of illustration. I want to learn more about the business and making a portfolio. I feel like I have the art skills to get started (and grow as I go). Thanks in advance.

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Victoria, how are you? :) My boot camp is not an art class, it's a business class. What I teach are things like how to position yourself in the market, what skills you need to demonstrate in your portfolio in order to win over art directors, how to present yourself on your website pages and how to build a modern professional looking website, but I'm not teaching how to draw :) Everyone comes in with different styles, goals and skill levels, and I teach how you can make a living and achieve your goals with what you bring to the table!
