Yet another shining example of the 70s love songs that were felt so deeply that they frequently brought people to tears with their honesty. No electronic gimmicks, no synthesizers, just talented musicians playing great music to underscore the incredibly well sung vocals.
Exactly so.
Agreed....
Totally agree
There are plenty of songs being written today that are equally emotional and contain no gimmicks, electronics etc....you just have to have your ears open....check out Brandi Carlile - Promise to Keep , live version,, you'll swear you were back in the 70's discovering a brand new artist.
Yes that's right on for real
Man sometimes growing up in the 70s we didn’t realize how great and meaningful this song’s were! Here we are all grown up and understand how beautiful they were! 70s definitely had some memorable beautiful songs!
I agree! The first time I saw and heard Dan sing the song in 1977, I was only 13 and hadn't been in love. As a piano student and singer, I labeled this song as "pretty" and well sung. I liked it very much. Many years later , I have a great appreciation for, and reverence for this beautiful song. It has a special place in my heart.
Some great vocals and music, I agree!. My freaking great grandchildren will listen. Who today has that staying power??
It still sends chills down my spine after all these years. Such a beautiful and moving song.
My mom and dads “song”……was their wedding first dance and played at my moms funeral in 2015. Every time I hear it….reminds me of my folks.
Gosh, thanks for making ME cry. RIP to your parents (and mine) - I hope you're doing okay. That's still a pretty recent wound.
-my mom passed away when i was 15-
-years old and my dad 10 years ago-
Sorry to hear this. If this was my "parents song" I would wish to be deaf. This song is so hilariously awful!
Mike I only wish you the best in your life - it’s obvious that this song means so much to you
Why so vicious bro and totally unnecessary you need to take a long hard look at yourself and get yourself a little humanity and empathy.
Back when I was a teenager, I thought of this as a sappy love song. Hearing it again many years later, I appreciate it for the beautiful song that it is.
Still reads as "sappy" to this 68 year old cynic...
I loved this song way back when. My sister had the same opinion as your teenage self. I remember her laughing at the song and mocking the lyrics, and me when I protested that I loved the song. We were very close, but this was one thing we disagreed about. She's been gone ten years now, and I wish I could ask her if her opinion of the song has changed.
Back in grade school I loved it because it was sappy. I used to make mix tapes of sappy love songs on the radio.
Here's a 63 year old who loved sappy love songs then, and still loves them now. (Which, BTW, is the reason I put in a vote for Johnny Lee's "Prisoner of Hope" the other day... or "Looking for Love," a bigger hit for him, but I prefer the former.)
Maturity is an amazing thing 😁
Yes, Dan Hill wrote this song. It is his majestic masterpiece! But I recommend you also listen to " and "I never thought" and "Can't we try". I believe you will enjoy them as well.
This takes me back to the innocence of school dances. When you nervously ask the pretty girl you've had a crush on to dance to this song. You take her hand, and lead her out to the dance floor and put your hands around her waist. You lean in close to her smelling how good her hair smells, Hoping that there might be a connection. I'm a 61 year old man now, but I treasure the innocence and great decade of the 1970's and the beautiful love songs we got to experience first hand. We can only go back there in our memories and browse through time, but wish that the visit could be longer.
I've not heard this in years! Love this song! ✌❤🎶
Check out his duet “Can’t We Try” with Vonda Shephard. That song was also remade as a freestyle version by Rockwell & Collage 🔥
Slow skate 80s roller rink vibes lol.
Definitely check out Vonda Shepard! She was huge during the Ally McBeal show and sang the title song "Searchin' My Soul"!
I love her!
A great song 🎵
"Can't We Try" is one of my favorite songs of my 64 yrs of listening to all different kinds of music.
I cannot believe it was back in (1977) when this song first came out. It was 46 years ago I met and married my wife, and this song was playing everywhere. It was a monster hit back in 1977. And it was Dan Hill's biggest hit. I will never forget this song and how much it meant to my wife and me. Great upload and reaction.
Dan Hill has a duet with Vonda Shepherd called “Can’t We Try” that is very good.
Ooh, Vonda Shepard!! I'm going to listen to her "Searchin' My Soul" right now!!
One of my all time fave duets… 🥰
Forgot about that one!
@surlechapeau Yes, her 2 "Allly McBeal" albums are great, mostly cover songs. 🎵
Dan Hill was 19 years old when he wrote this beautiful song for his older girlfriend. She moved off with her American football player boyfriend. I would stay with someone who could write like this at 19.
Ann Murray is another great Canadian singer. Love her voice!
Elvis thought she had the best female voice at the time.
@@thejorgeee Elvis was mostly high, so I wouldn't put full trust in his opinion.
Anne Murray had similar songs that were from the heart - beautiful voice and both power and sweetness!
Yes, Anne Murray! Another Canadian star! "Snowbird," "You Needed Me," "Could I Have This Dance (for the Rest of My Life)," "Shadows in the Moonlight," and "Danny's Song." Not to mention her cover of the Monkees' "Daydream Believer."
She actually has talent unlike this guy.
This was a smash hit in the '70s. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it.
I remember being so sick of this song that there were no words to describe it!
The 80's was full of amazing duets. He had a great one with Vonda Sheppard called "Can't We Try." 😎
Yes! I hope they do it! I’m going to listen to that one now! It has been years!
"In your eyes"
I thought it was 80s as well from the video look, but my memory was it was a 70s song. Sure enough: 1977. I guess Dan was a lithograph ahead of the fashion curve. 😊
"You ask me if I love you, and I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly, than mislead you with a lie"
Yeah, perfect wedding lyrics right there xD
Yeah, if you don’t want this song to be ruined for you, never look up the story about how it came to be, ha. Sounds beautiful, but the pain behind it is just… oof.
A true 100% beautiful love song.💕
Great song! Takes me way back to when I was a little boy. Man, the music was so incredible back then...
No doubt😊
It sure was!!
This one truly gets to me, even now, after all these years. Love it.
Dan Hill is from an incredibly accomplished family. His father Daniel, was a social activist was chair of the Ontario Human Rights Commission and wrote "The Freedom Seekers: Blacks in Early Canada" while his brother Laurence wrote "The Book of Negroes" (originally published in the US as "Someone Knows My Name", although the mini series used it the original name on BET)
This was a huge hit in the late 70s, then he kind of disappeared for years, and then in the late 80s came back with the huge smash hit duet “Can’t We Try” which you guys would also definitely love.
Happily Dan is still around and performing. Very recently did a Canadian tour with Andy Kim.
For me, this is the ultimate 70s ballad. I adore this song!
Yes, Dan co-wrote it. Beautiful song!
I loved this song growing up. It’s so pretty
The goose bumps I get hearing this again after 40 years from my prom. Wow!
I have always loved this song. I knew all the words after all these years. ❤️❤️❤️
Woah, I feel like I haven't heard this in like 30 yrs. Still as beautiful now as it was back then.
This song is without a doubt one of my all time favorites. I have recommended it on these comments several times.
I was born in '69 and knew as a kid that this was a special song. Still on my playlist.
"A hesitant Prize Fighter, still trapped within My youth" still gets Me!
Haven't heard this one in forever - but it's still one of the most beautiful ballads ever. Thank you for getting back to Canadian music. Amber - we have another fantastic French Canadian artist that I would love for you to react to. Gino Vannelli has an amazing ballad called Living Inside Myself - and a great uptempo song called Black Cars. And my very TOP French Canadian artist Roch Voisine. It would mean the world to me if you could watch his official video for I'll Always be There. Incredible song, vocals, and you'll BOTH love the piano and violin in the background. I'm hoping you see this - amongst all of you requests.
Um...Dan Hill might beg to differ on the RIP bit. We did lose the iconic Gordon Lightfoot a week ago Monday, though.
@@stevetournay6103 I'll edit my post. I think I confused Dan Seals with Dan HIll.
Gino Vannelli's Black Cars is a cool tune, I liked Wild Horses, and Just a Motion Away as well
They did Deborah Cox less than 2 months ago.
This song was all over AM radio in the late 70's!
sure was!! haven't hear it in years.
Dan wrote this when he was 19 years old, his grandfather was Daniel G Hill II, who was an ordained minister with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Daniel G Hill III did not like how African Americans were treated in the US, so he moved to Canada to study sociology and became a pioneer in human rights, prominent writer, and historian in the field of the history of Blacks in Canada
AND.....Dan's brother is Lawrence Hill who wrote "The Book of Negroes". A very prolific family.
AN EPIC Dan Hill Duet (with Vonda Shepard) is called "Can't we try".
Dan Wrote the Theme Song to the movie "Rambo: First blood" (It's a long road).
I hope im not the only guy who gets tears in his eyes when hearing this song. One of many I consider a Drepressing song that at the same is Beautiful. Great song.
Nearly FIFTY years old! The beautiful stuff is timeless.
Absolute young father and young mother song celebrating their three babies. That would be y'all you know. I have always loved this song even when I didn't have anybody. But this one y'all need to celebrate each other with this song all five of you. I hope you really enjoyed this one it's another one of the best we had back in our time.
The back story on this song is interesting. I love the raw emotion in this song.
Canadian Group:
“Sweet City Woman”by The Stampeders 💯 %”BANJO” for Jay!!🪕
I drove myself nuts trying to remember his name recently. When my wife and I were dating and in a rough spot his “I Fall All Over Again” came out. Man is just smoooooth
The 70's really did have some of the best love songs. Thanks for bringing back these memories for me.
Oh wow…THE love song of my childhood 💕✨
Dan Hill wrote “Sometimes When We Touch” in 1973, at age 19. Dan Hill, Vonda Shepard - "Can't We Try".
You really need to check out England Dan and John Ford Coley "Night Are Forever Without You". I know you'd both love it.
Great suggestion!
Absolutely fantastic song! An all time favorite song of mine! I high recommend his next single Can't We Try" a 1987 duet performed by Dan Hill and Vonda Shepard.
Dan also appeared on Northern Lights - Tears are Not Enough with scores of Canadian stars in relief for Africa.
Dan Hill has such a beautiful tone to his voice…
Another amazing Canadian singer is .. Luba… her vocals will blow you away.
One of her songs is… Every Time I See Your Picture.
Or… Let It Go…
You won’t be disappointed…😊
One of my mom's favorite love songs...any time it came on the radio we blasted it
I consider myself fortunate that I had older siblings as I was exposed to the music they listened to. I remember trying to memorize the lyrics to this song to attempt to sing it. Any music with piano makes me want to listen to it.
You should check out 'Black Velvet' by Canadian Alannah Myles. This song is a tribute to Elvis. His portrait was often pained on black velvet and apparently he used a hair dye named black velvet.
HEY guys a big hit for Dan reached number 3 on Billboard pop singles chart in February of 1978 hey Amber how about Canadian singer Ann Murray for Female Friday her smash hit You needed me or Canadian singer Bryan Adams singing Straight from the heart keep up the great work guys.
Oooh! The Songbird, Anne Murray. Yes!
They already did You Needed Me
My favourite Anne Murray song is the little known Buffalo in the Park. The organ playing is weird, going on creepy, but her voice was never better
His biggest success... kind of a one hit wonder artist.
I literally sing this song ALL the time!! So glad you guys reacted to it, and enjoyed it! Thank you once again.
Beautiful song. ❤ 🎼🎶
Beautiful song....back in the early 80's a disabled boy in upstairs apt. would play this song,
Over and over and over....20 times a day loudly....I think about that kid, when I hear this song.
Another Canadian group you need to check out is Lighthouse, especially because they're a horn-friendly group. You can start with "One Fine Morning" or "Pretty Lady"
Leonid and Friends just released their recreation of One Fine Morning. Amazing.
Love both of those songs! Great suggestions.
Asked for those ones several times. Hopefully one day they will discover this wonderful band (add add Sunny Days to that list)
Yes! Lighthouse! You both love Chicago and Lighthouse is Canada's version. Lots of horns, bright upbeat music and lyrics that will have you longing to be on the water. Pretty Lady is my favorite and Amber will love it, but Sunny Days is more Jay's jam, I'm sure. Please please please do Lighthouse!
Speaking of Pretty Lady, I like Trooper's Oh Pretty Lady
Love this song by Dan Hill . Another Canadian group from 70,s and 80,s I would love to hear is Glass Tiger. The song Don't forget me when I'm gone. I think you will like it, has some horns in it too.
Produced by Bryan Adams who sang the line, "For heaven's sake" on the final chorus.
Oh yes. Been a minute since hearing this one. "the honesty's too much" What a line. I'm holding my love til we die. Yes sir. Nice tune. Thanks.
Wow! This takes me back decades. Great song! ❤🇨🇦
Love this song Dan Hill, first song I ever heard him sing..... ❤ in the 80's
Always loved this song. A one hit wonder here in the UK with this classic (#13 1977).
Much love from England 🏴
He wasn't a one hit wonder. Though you did add the qualifier "in the UK."
@@rachybaby72 Therefore.... accurate. And even beyond that, anywhere outside Canada, *this* is the song that he'd be known for (if at all). Canadian radio content regulations may boost domestic rankings and sales, but that doesn't translate worldwide.
@Hexon Uh huh... Did I stutter? I said he did add the qualifier, so your "therefore" is redundant/useless.
Oh, you need some schooling. That's *not* the only song he's known for outside of Canada, so your random and irrelevant "Canadian radio content regulations" dig is as unnecessary as your "therefore"...
@Hexon *Part 2:* Oh, and even if his songS were only hits in Canada (but they're not), that would have nothing to do with Canadian content rules, since you can't force people to like a song or buy an album....................
Class dismissed.
I love Dan Hill's music I wish there was a way I can meet him I thought of coming to Canada to see if I can find them that's how much I love him he's got great music he's my heart I love you❤ love you Dan hill
Wow!! He also had a song called Never Thought. It was my song to my girlfriend back in 87-88. We broke up when we went away to college. I was in Florida a couple months ago, and we re-connected....35 years later. I am moving to Florida next month.
I tried singing this at a Karaoke bar back in the 90s. It did not go so well. ba ha ha. Love this song
This version is great, but it's when he was a little older than when the song was 1st released. As beautiful as this one is, the 1977 version is even better... Oh, btw, I remember seeing an interview of him talking about why he wrote this song. I believe he was having issues with his girlfriend. So, he wrote this song for her and sang it to her over the phone. He thought she'd love it. But, she just told him he was too serious or emotional (or something like that). She broke up with him any way. But, I guess He got the last laugh by making lots of money on song royalties!
"Too Fing intense" were her words, according to Dan's autobiography I Am My Father's Son...
“The Honesty’s Too Much” expresses perfectly how I felt as a ver young man who loved someone but was so afraid of total commitment. People really need to be sure and ready before committing.
This song always brings a lump to my throat 🥺
This song puts me in mind of Dan Fogelberg's love song called 'Longer' which you absolutely have to listen to some day.
"At times I'd like to break you, and drive you to your knees. At times I'd like to break through, and hold you endlessly"
Because relationships.
I must have heard this on the radio 100 times when I was a kid. I never knew till today the name of the artist!
I saw him Edmonton, Alberta in one of his first concerts, before he was a somebody. Even then it was a powerful song and a concert worth going to. I hit like once I saw his name, no hesitation
Great song. Hearing this again made me tear up, I guess because it brought back so many memories.
“I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” by England Dan and John Ford Coley would be a great one for you guys to review .Great vid as always 🙏❤️
More Canadian talent. Check out the Rankin Family ‘North Country’ or ‘ We Rise again’
First heard this when I was 9...still one of the most beautiful love songs ever!
Fun Fact - Dan Hill also sang the theme song from the Sylvester Stallone film First Blood (the first Rambo movie) called It's A Long Road (First Blood)
Beautiful song, always liked this one!!
Can you please check out At This Moment by Billy Vera & the Beaters. It's an absolutely heartbreaking song and probably my favorite one hit wonder of all time.
Great Love Song. the final line really pulls on the heart strings. Thanks for the Smile.
2:26, yep, that Right There. Amber's reaction. the heart moved.
This was always such a heart felt beautiful love song!!! He's amazing! Love those 70's. Can't We Try is another great song by Dan Hill!!!❤❤❤❤
One of my favourites, true Canadian treasure…..Dan Hill.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
This is such a beautiful song, I've loved it for 40 years
Love this song. I also like My Eyes Adored You. Different artist but same time of my life.
My Dad past when I was 2 years old. My Mom would always tell me this was one of his favorite songs.
As a Canadian I would like to request one of our best Bands "Blue Rodeo". There are a dozen great songs to pick from, "5 Days In May", "Hasn't Hit Me Yet", "Try", "Rain Down On Me", "Till I Am Myself Again", "Bad Timing". Such an excellent band.
This songs pulls me back to the love of my life. The lyrics were just so perfect to describe what we wanted and our fears of was it real. We had nine years together until an accident took her away, such a gift her unconditional love and of course loss. I truly hope everyone experiences that kind of love in the lifetime. Rest Easy Kate, I'll be with you again before too many more years. And something tells me you two have that deep, unconditional love that so often alludes relationships.
Dan hill is a finger song writer. This was the top love song in its day. Very precious song. His best song was this one. Don’t Give Up On Us was another strong hit. Can’t We Try is a beautiful duet with Vonda shepherd. Never Thought I Could Love is a wonderful love song. I Fall All Over Again is another hit
Love Dan Hill. So many songs to chose from. Unborn Heart will melt your heart.
Oh wow. I remember this song. I forgot about it. The 70's produced some of the most heartfelt love songs ever.
The way I belted this out when I was 3 and had no idea what I was singing about. 😂
that was me with let’s get it on. got the 45 cuz the of musicality. sang along. had no idea what it was about
One of my all time favourite songs.
Jay, u are correct, this was a popular wedding song many years back.
First line suggests a heck of a rocky start!
Good lord!! I forgot about this song for DECADES! I sang this to my Jr high girlfriend. Worked damn well for the day.
one of my all time fav's! Right up there with John Secada's Just Another Day. LoneStar's Amazed. Chris DeBurgh's Lady in Red. Chris Isaac's Wicked Game... to name a few.
This was My personal FAVORITE in my Senior year of High School! ('79-'80)
Never Thought (That I Could Love) is my favorite Dan Hill song.
Dan Hill is awesome and as many others have mentioned "Can't we try" with Vonda Shepherd is a mega hit he had and would make a good reaction video
Another great song of Dan's is Never thought that I could love. Very romantic and beautiful❤
With just the musical intro I become lost in this song. ….every time, since the ‘70’s ❤ hi from BC Canada 🇨🇦
I'm not saying how old I am, but I do remember this song
