In this video Dr Jose Domingos explains the BIOFLOC SUPER INTENSIVE SYSTEM to farm shrimp and tilapia. Here, in Part 2 the focus is on preparation of the tanks, aeration requirements, and development of bioflocs for the first time. If you want to go straight to the point and get some recipes for making biofloc from scratch, skip to the end of the video, but the most important is the understanding the why we do so.

yes for the biofloc, but need to respect shrimp circadian rhythms, they need light and dark cycle just like we do

Hi, the content will depend on the brand and how much water in the molasses, so not all are the same

No need to prepare with salt the water? This water the shrimp will stay for 90 days? or need nursery?

@@hashtagfish8542 Hi, thanks for reply. I have asked some vanamei shrimp farmers about it. Some saying salinity 5ppt?10ppt and 20ppt? which is the best? What type of sea salt used or there is only 1 type? Lastly, What is the volume for 1000 L.?Thanks.
@@nigel7971 even 1ppt okay but for intensive culture 10 ppt minimum. What is important is the ionic balance to be same as seawater, if use common salt only (NaCll shrimp will not survive

What's your opinion on clearwater ras systems for the majorities of the grow out phase? I've been thinking of leaving pls in their nursery tank that uses biofloc and after 3weeks moving them to a clearwater system to help stimulate their natural environment
It is not economically viable clear water RAS for shrimp, that is, it will not pay the bills
Also juvenile shrimp don't live in clear waters, but in mangroves and sea side lagoons.
Thanks for sharing this. May I know what do you mean repeat 4 to 6 times? As the example we need 32.5 gram molasses for 50 gr shrimp feed per day. Do you mean we have to give 32.6 gram molasses per day 4 to 6 times? So if I give 4 times, the total molasses: 32.6 x 4 = 130.4 gram a day?
By repeat I mean you apply and keep monitoring water quality daily and re apply according to changes, not blindly, until flocs are established

Hi.. Thanks so much for the information, if possible i have two questions fot you:
1. In the case of biofloc prawn farming site being close to large commercial ponds, risk of pathogens would be high. What would be a way counteract this? Maybe sand filter + chlorine treatment?
2. Would it be better to culture biofloc in a separate tank as a starter to add to other tanks during initial water preparation?

1. Always assume the risk of pathogen to be high, independent of which system you use. The pathogen coming from the PLs have as high or higher risk as the intake water, in this case disinfection will not help. So getting PLs from hatchery that have high biosecure standard and use SPF broodstock and clean PL is as important. Yes, you can use rapid sand filter, gravity sand filter, drum filter or cartridge filter - it depends on the size of your project and how much water is used. Chlorine will kill everything, pathogens but also good bacteria. Pathogens can also come from the air as bird droppings.
2. Starting in a separate tank may help you get a few weeks ahead, but it might be just an unnecessary investment of having this extra tank as you need heavy mixing and aeration. Once you have your biofloc establish in your first tank/pond you can reuse 10-30% to seed other tank/pond.
Original biofloc culture has several drawbacks (too much floc is generated to deal with ammonia, this excess floc need to be constantly removed).

Thanks for the video, it's quite helpful. I am from India, planning to set up a small biofloc unit. I have few questions, can you help me with the answers?
1.Should we keep adding the feed and carbon source daily around 5 to 6 times, until the water is matured?
2. I heard Vannamie has cannibalistic nature. At that high intensity level, is it a problem?
3. Does the bacteria in biofloc compete with pathogens like vibrio? What type of bacteria grow in this 'soup' why the vibrio won't grow in this environment?
1. no need to add so frequently, just enough to get flocks going, about 5 times during water preparation.
2. as long as there is enough food Vannamei will not cannibalize each other.
3. any marine or brackish system will have Vibrio, just need to keep good culture environment and the other competing bacteria won't let Vibrio dominate
3. Vibrio will ALWAYS be present in any system, but by keeping a good oxygenated environment, low ammonia, not overfeeding, Vibrio will not be a problem because there will be many other competing bacteria

1) means mature biofloc water can be used again for next cultivation period? if yes, how many percent can be used?
2) Is that good a combination biofloc with nanobubble? my nanobubble equipment cannot make a mechanical move in vertical or horizontal to avoid dead zones.
Hi friend. I would use up to 50% but there is no rule and you could use more as long as there is no pathogens. the Nanobubbler is not a 100% replacement for the blower or paddle wheel aerator. because like you said the bubbles don't float and don't create currents mixing the water. I did an experiment in the lab measuring bubbles with an expensive equipment last year and after 3 weeks 65% of the Nanobubbles were still in the water.

no, not per day. Use that recipe (quantity) until you get bioflocs over about 1 month (so 1x to 2x per week)

Thanks for sharing. I'm trying to raise shrimp in biofloc. I get abundance excessive foam in the pond from several days ago until now. Is it normal or dangerous? The water is quite clear. The water quality: ammonia very low (zero) but nitrite quite high.
Foam is normal in the beginning and sometimes mid cycle too. Water is clear means you then don't have floc, should be brown
@@joseantoniosantosdom Thanks for your answer. I am reducing the feeding rate now in order to reduce the foam. one thing I'm still struggle is stabilize nitrite. sometimes it up, sometimes it down. I thought the nitrification bacteria has been established because the ammonia always low.
@Samuel Limawan if shrimp is demanding feed don't reduce because of foam, foam is not a problem. High nitrite level means you have anoxic zone somewhere and the sludge is rotting
@@joseantoniosantosdom I have more question, sir. Let say the sugar required is 100 gr to be added for shrimp food in one day (1000 gr, for example). The food will be given 4 times in a day (@ 250 gr). Should I add 25 gr of sugar for each feeding of shrimp or can I add the 100 gr of sugar at once (before 1st feeding batch or after 4th feeding batch)? Thanks
@@SamuelLimawan i don't understand, the sugar is not for the shrimp. It is to reduce ammonia.

Can you start with say 200 pi on a small fish tank and move them out as they grow to a bigger pool/Pond?

Of course but 200 PL is not much, you probably will not have many to transfer later. It's also difficult to buy so little, unless you have a farmer friend who will give them away.

HI Alex. Shrimp #03 and #04 videos are about molting. I suggest you track your shrimp molting by following the uropod method looking at the tip of the tail under the microscope explained in video #03 and see how your shrimp molt according to the water quality changes in your system.

I don't understand what your question is, please elaborate
@@hashtagfish8542 I understand that biofloc bacteria mainly consists of heterotrophs and autotrophs. T. Samocha advocates a balance of 1/3 heterotrophs and 2/3 autotrophs, which is a mixotrophic system that requires a different strategy to manage water quality than say heterotrophs dominant systems.
It depends on the amount of light that hits the water, this will determine how many autot (algae) there are. The name of the system does not matter.
In any case Biofloc is difficult to maintain in commercial conditions, this is why I now advocate for a Bio-RAS system
