  • IT"S FINALY HERE!
The shipment from Dakota Pastels for our Soft Pastel Informational Intensive Workshop!
Since I originally just had the darks sampler set of soft pastels for our brand comparison and reviews, I felt the darks alone did not represent the brands individual qualities enough, since dark pigments tend to have qualities of their own. So, I had Dakota Pastels kindly curate me a set of turquoise pastels to add to the demonstrations.
I have been working on this FREE informational workshop about soft pastels for over a month, gathering as much information as I can to provide you with a well-rounded, multifaceted review and comparison of almost all the artist grade soft pastel brands on the market, so you can see and make an informed decision regarding what soft pastels you may want to invest in. After all, good quality soft pastels aren't cheap, so you should know all you can before investing in a set. My goal for this upcoming workshop is to provide you with enough information to help you along your soft pastel journey. From the history of pastels, to the paper, we will be covering it all in a series of videos.
We also unbox some other goodies in this video, for pastel reviews and tutorials to come.
I hope you enjoy this unboxing, and get excited for the workshop series coming up right here on CZcams very VERY soon.
Comment below with any questions, comments, or things YOU want to know about soft pastels, so I can include them in the upcoming video series.

It's so easy to become obsessed with pastels!! My first sets were Unison and Terry Ludwig's sets along with Prismacolors. I've never regretted the investment and have joyously continued to branch out. I think these sets are perfect for a serious beginner. ❤❤❤

I’m like this with all my supplies lol, but this shipment was especially special. It was the final shipment before I could do my soft pastel intensive workshop. So I was SUPER excited.

Loved this video! Ty for making it. I one day hope to own some blue earth and Ludwigs but for now I have a set of 30 hand rolled Mungyos , the 64 half stick mu gyos and a 20 set of Richeson hand rolled. The work well for me so far but I have. concluded I need more lol I do need some pencils tho for fine work but I'm making due for now. What paper would you recommend, there are so many out there but unless I buy I really don't know. Many artists say thier fans but paper cost a bit and I need the best bang for my buck!! Thanks for all you do.

Oh my you have spent the whole wallet! You have an extraordinary sampling of turquoise sticks! I have been an Artist for over 30+ years and I have taught more than a few classes. I am still learning about pastels and I am not an expert, yet I think you cannot advise a beginner to purchase Terry Ludwig pastels. You have to learn how to use a medium before you go and buy the most expensive supplies, I have suggested beginners buy professional grade watercolor paints because you can have a more difficult experience with student grade paints. I know Terry’s are so soft that you can fill your paper with a single stroke! You must learn how to use your light touch to apply those sticks! I do not believe that a beginner should waste their money until they learn at least something about how to use soft pastels. Please instruct us and tell us how you could advise your viewers to buy these as a starter set?? I am at a loss. Sorry for being so difficult, I am looking forward to watching your videos! I am just having trouble with some of the things you are recommending. Gaaah! I should just shut up and get some sleep myself. I did give you a thumbs up in spite of this and my incredulity. Keep going and don’t stop!

I was more referring to the values and color choices of the set that would be a good choice for a beginner's set. There's an essential range of hue, values, and chromas in these 2 sets by Maggie Price that a beginner should look for in any "new" set of pastels. Again, this is a brief unboxing, not necessarily a recommendation. I did mention their "softness" and needing a system to use them with good paper for this to work for you. There will be individual reviews for these sets that will include additional information, like what you have mentioned above. This is why I am planning a "Soft Pastel Intensive Workshop" on here for me to fill in all the holes of info I couldn't fit into each video of reviews. Most of us start with Rembrandts, and a small set of hard pastels, and work our way up! So I agree with your assessment of "learning how to use a light touch", but we have to make mistakes to learn! This is why my unison set of 120 reviews was before this. I would recommend that first, IF you want to start high-end, and have the means for it. My point was if you're going to go all the way, and you want to start with something like Terry Ludwigs (which some people who are artist's in other mediums, moving on to pastels may do, or some beginner's who just feel they want to start there will! We cannot control that) that they should look for these qualities in order to have an easier time. It's not the brand itself that I am referring to. It's the contents of the set and how it is laid out in a "basic" color theory way. Hue, Values, Chroma. Lights, darks, brights, and neutrals. I hope that makes sense. Of course, I may have forgotten to mention a set of hard pastels is also essential to have in getting started. You give me so many ideas for my future videos! Keep it coming Micheal

I'm a beginner in pastels but coming from other mediums as you mention, and I've already learnt the hard way that cheap supplies can really destroy you. I bought a really cheap set of pastels about 15 years ago and did a workshop. I hated the pastels, loathed the paper and the teacher didn't mention anything about softness and filling tooth. I therefore hated pastels for the next 13 years and never touched them. I then became friends with a pastel artist who showed me what difference there is with quality pastels.
I am now in the process of learning and trying the different brands and papers 🤣. I intend to buy a set of slightly harder pastels ( I have a small set of Rembrandt and don't really like how hard they are, I want a bit softer) and very soft pastels once I've decided. So this set would certainly be a consideration for the softer set. These kinds of videos help me understand what I need to keep in mind while painting as well as which ones ARE actually softer. A resounding recommendation online to beginners is sennelier, aren't they kind of in the same bracket?
These videos are so informative and I love that you're covering the top brands 🙂 because luckily while I was wasting my time with cheap supplies, my income was increasing lol
