- I shot the footage for this video over a period of abt 2-3 months & 20 rides FRONT SEAT POV and some BACK SEAT reverse views & late night footage are also included. This video is best viewed in 720p or 1080p HD with good sound.
PLEASE NOTE: Before I published this video I sourced the information I have used directly from Luna Park and from the Luna Park website (2012). However, I have recently learned that Melbourne's SCENIC RAILWAY (1912) is currently not the ONLY brakeman operated roller coaster in the world. The RUTSCHEBANEN (1914) at Tivoli in Copenhagen also operates brakeman carriages. Now I have since learned that the roller coaster at GREAT YARMOUTH PLEASURE BEACH, England also has brakeman operated carriages. (20 Nov, 2014) ... However, according to those sources of information I used in 2012, Melbourne's Scenic Railway (1912) was the only roller coaster operating with brakeman carriages at the time this video was published. So as far as I can ascertain, Melbourne's Scenic Railway has continually operated with brakeman carriages since 1912 (with intermittent closures for maintenance, upkeep etc.) ... So I think it more likely that Melbourne's Scenic Railway (1912) is the OLDEST roller coaster operating with brakeman carriages and whether or not it was the ONLY roller coaster operating with brakeman carriages in 2012 is still speculative; depending on whether or not the other two coasters were using brakeman carriages at that time. If so, my apologies if this part of the information used in my video is incorrect.

THE GREAT SCENIC RAILWAY ...
On Friday 13 December, 1912 Luna Park opens to the public for the first time. A spooky day for some, but an appropriate one for the Melbourne public embracing the weird and wonderful as they walk through the now-famous mouth of Mr Moon. Thousands of excited people ride the Great Scenic Railway on that first day out of 22,319 registered attendees to the Park.
80,000 lights are turned on that first night, adding an air of fairy-tale amazement to the scene.
The Great Scenic Railway remains operational throughout World War I, even though there are reduced operations in the rest of the Park.
In 1939-45 Luna Park remains open during World War II, but has to abide by blackout restrictions. The 'Place of [50,000?] Lights' as the Park used to be known is too clear a target for air attacks, so an eerie atmosphere descends each night, only enhancing the intrigue and magic of Mr Moon and his famous Luna Park.
In 1954 Queen Elizabeth II visits the Park as a part of her Coronation tour. It remains unclear whether she goes upside down on any rides or screams with the rest of the visitors on the Ghost Train.
circa 1982 the National Trust classifies the Great Scenic Railway, the Face and Towers, and the Carousel. Heritage Victoria determines a heritage overlay to the Park years later.
1999 - Full restoration
In 2007, Artist Mark Ogge completes a sixty square metre painting called 'One Thousand and One Nights' on the Great Scenic Railway Platform and Luna Park was voted the National Trust's Victorian Heritage Icon for 2007.
Extensive restoration work on the Great Scenic Railway, commenced in 2007 and caused by the prolonged impact of the drought on soil stability, is completed.
In 2010 The Coney Island Top Drop replaces the smaller Shock Drop ride. In an effort to revitalise the historic Coney Island to its once glorious past, the City of New York reopens its 'Luna Park'. Phase one of Pamela Irving's mosaic, 'Dreaming with Open Eyes' is installed on the Luna Palace façade.

The Legacy of Coney Island, N.Y.
The first Luna Park was built at Coney Island, New York in 1903. Melbourne's Luna Park was designed and built in 1912 by T.H. Eslick and 20 builders from Coney Island for North American entrepreneurs - J.D. Williams and the Phillips Brothers. The Great Scenic Railway was the principal feature of Luna Park when it first opened.
Herman Leon and Harold Phillips ran Luna Park for many years and also built the Palais Theatre, opposite. Williams returned to Hollywood in 1913 and established a major film studio. Sydney's Luna Park was opened in 1935.
The Moorish entrance towers and "Mr Moon" were built as part of the Great Scenic Railway and from 1912 it was a unique example of roller-coaster and amusement park design. It is now the only roller-coaster operating from this period, and has the only example of brakeman operated carriages in the World. These were built in the U.S.
I was a Scenic railway driver from 1975 to 1980 and what a wonderful time it was, met some great people over the years it was an absolute privelege to work there, thanks for the memories.

thank you so kindly Mysti .... oh yes! these old coasters are a bit rough and bumpy, but as you say really thrilling !! I wouldn't suggest anyone scared of heights go on tho, it can get a bit windy up there and they dont allow cameras in case they fly off ... one of the staff told me that they find a number of mobile phones underneath the tracks each day .... I had this camera strapped to my chest! so it couldn't come off ! Love to you sweet Mysti =^..^=

Not the only brakeman-operated coaster. The one at Great Yarmouth in the UK was moved there in 1932.

I'm so very glad you enjoyed the ride :)) You must try and get there one day ... the atmosphere at Luna Park is quite magical, its one of those places that hasn't changed over the years for the sake of change ... so that magical atmosphere has been kept alive ... probably the intention of those who built it. The Coney Island Luna Park is said to be similar as well ... but far bigger :))
I've been on the scenic railway three times. The first and third times it felt like my heart was in my throat, but the second time I didn't feel anything at all because I was close to the front. Don't know why they call it the scenic railway if it's a roller coaster, but it's cool though.
It's called Scenic Railway because that is in fact the name of the Rollercoaster model type. It use to be more common back in the day but now only 3 left in the world (Ours, Germany and the one in England). Ours is the Oldest of the three.
Nicely Done. Maybe one day I'll get to Australia and maybe I'll take a ride on the Luna Park Scenic Railway.

oh thanku kindly Prof :) It took 6 rides to get that reverse shot! gosh that was hard. I used a gopro hero2 set on 170deg wide angle with 30 fps @ 1080p. I dont think any other camera would have taken it! It was strapped to my chest, otherwise it would have flown off. It got a bit windy up there & the ride is quite bumpy. Did you notice the parrots flying across in front of us on the first decline, gosh they were close but the camera doesn't really show that . Have a lovely week my friend =^..^=

Well done on getting such a great video done. On the incline to the first tunnel you can see the twist in the track near the top - due to the ground sinking on that side of the park. There's a twist also on the first drop, though it's not so obvious. Seating capacity used to be 20, now it's 18 - the seat behind the brakeman stopped being used some years ago.

The Luna Park in Sydney opened in 1935 ... I think "Mr Moon" is also on the front of the Sydney Luna Park ... if you come to Melbourne, we can ride the scenic railway together ... :))
