    Nothing mentioned about composition. No gear reviews. Zero information on camera settings. No post-processing advice. Yet this is one of the single most important videos any nature photographer (or any other creative endeavor) can watch. Takes a lot of courage to open up about a subject like this in front of a social media audience, but the benefits are far-reaching. (Not that there's nothing to be gleaned from covering the afore-mentioned subjects🙂) Well done Kim...and thanks!

    Thank you for such honesty. Anxiety and creativity are polar opposites for me. The trick is catching yourself going down that rabbit hole, and resetting your mind, as you just shared! One of my favorite spiritual teachers is a Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön. This quote is on my mind lately: You are the sky. Everything else - it’s just the weather. Check her out. Wishing you good weather both literally and spiritually!

    Great video re: slowing down. Re: the bath houses images. The one showing the huts in silhouette and a fiery sky I find generates tension. The second photo more peaceful and opportunities to examine the huts plus appreciating the various colors.

    The very first image of the light falling on the Beach huts would have set me up for the day! the others are there just for the taking! I only ever go out when I want to practice my photography and my aim is to take some nice pictures, I am not under any pressure at all, I don't have to take pictures to please others but some like my pictures which is a bonus, I learnt one thing in life buying cameras is a mugs game and money should be spent on travel instead! I did watch your vlog from start to finish and I found it too deep for me but I watched it never the less! You live in a lovely part of the world and I am glad to see that you recognise that! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and pictures with us all! Take care.

    Good Message about Anxiety.Being older and thinking of my younger life,stress was there but no where near as much as the youths and so forth have today. Pressure where there is no need for it .The world needs to stop chasing forward at immense speed.Slow down ,breath, look and think instead of being driven by others we are all the same Slow down life and enjoy what you see. You have control of yourself. Enjoy life. 😊

    One thing I found, and it's something I've sort of subconsciously known, but don't always think about, is just SLOWING DOWN an realizing that you may not hit all of the best spots in one morning o evening (or one trip, if you're going to a national park or a special trip). But also by doing so, it leaves something for you to come back to. So my new thing is rather than trying to find all of the best spots say in a national park, I pick a few spots I want to photography and I just slow down and work those spots. I know that I won't get to all spots that are available, but by slowing down, and in some cases, visiting fewer places, but coming back with more quality images gives a better feeling -- and as they say, quality over quantity. I mean I've had trips where I was doing just the same thing, frantically running around trying to find the best spot only to come back and realize I really didn't like any of the images, and on other trips, where I maybe focused on two or three locations, and wasn't rushing around, I felt that I had a lot more images that I really liked. And some of this is because I WASN'T rushing around, but rather I was forcing myself to explore new compositions in locations and slowing down. Shooting digitally we can usually afford this because each click doesn't really cost money (like it would have with film) so slowing down, exploring and trying different (but thoughtful) shots is what helped me, and to be honest, I'm glad that I sort of realized this (too bad it took me a few years to really figure this out).
    I think also we are ina bit of a rush sometimes to get "the shot" that everyone else has, that we don't look for other alternative compositions too, because we are so fixated on the "hero shot" and getting that. And you should, but also don't neglect other possible shots. This is why I feel that picking two locations per day (preferably a morning/sunrise and evening/sunset location) is sufficient, and using the middle of the day to scope, rather than trying to do too much at sunrise or sunset. Also scoping helps too, and sometimes if I'm going to a park, I'll devote a full day to just scoping, in which case my camera may not come out of the bag but I rather use my smartphone instead while scoping locations -- when doing this, I may choose 3-4 locations to scope because I'm not really looking for the perfect light during this, but rather compositions and angles and making plans, so I don't need to spend nearly as much time during scoping days. But it does come in handy because it lets me figure out wher I want to be for some shots, and then after I get those, I can explore and try different shots, versus showing up and not knowing the area or trying to find shots while the sun is rising or setting.

  • @zeballos5757
    @zeballos5757 Před 9 měsíci

    Oh geez yes. Slowing down instead of pray and spray is so much better. I used to love the adrenalin of arriving at a new location and getting some quick shots before the light changed. I still do, but I prefer the days where I just look around and enjoy the location. I take much better images imo.
    I’m also a member of a photography club. I am in it for the social aspect of it more than taking the same picture as everyone else. My best pictures come from being alone or with one other person that I can connect with and relate to.
    I like your image with the gulls. One more visible and the rest appearing faint in the sequence.

    I really enjoyed your message about slowing down. All too often while in the field chasing the morning light I find myself rushing to get the shot rather than enjoying the moment. One of the main reasons I do landscape photography is to spend time in nature and feel closer to my creator. I unfortunately fall into he trap of rushing to find the perfect composition and image. As I head out this week to shoot more fall color I will take your message to heart and work to slow down and be more creative and simply enjoy being in nature.

    its why i scout locations, watch weather reports, and plan ahead. i know when and where the sun will rise or set at a particular location, i go to location if i can to see where a good shot may come from and plan the shot. sometimes i have to go back a few times for right lighting and such. but ya. no frantic for me.

    I just got back from a fall trip in North Carolina. I was there for 4 days and only came home with about 320 images. I hiked almost 17 miles and saw 8 waterfalls in the process. I found my phone did a good job and I enjoyed my hikes and surroundings more. I took chances and climbed and traveresed to get up close and really enjoyed my hikes. One of my best solo fall trips I've ever taken. I'm 57, so maybe that's part of it. 🙂 What a great message Kim!

      This past May a year ago I spent two weeks in Maui, and touring up and down front Street in Lahaina, and what they call up, and in that two weeks I took 3700 photos. But the two previous years before that I think each time I might have taken four or five hundred within that same two week period. I live in San Diego California where we have the beautiful mountains just to the east of us in San Diego county and to the north the mountains that are East and North around Los Angeles. Plus over the past 30 years I've made multiple trips up to Northern California to photograph the redwood trees and beautiful lush in the fall and winter months. And there were times when I only got a handful of photos, course all those years ago I was shooting film... Always trying to get the best photos. It wasn't until 3 years ago that I finally went digital, using my Nikon d500 and my Nikon d850... And as you know with digital you the luxury of taking thousands of photos, then we laptops and we can weed through and delete the ones that are not perfect or out of focus. But there are many I go out for a day of photographing the world and only coming home with only a handful. There are so many factors that control how many photos we come... But we love photographing the world and our love for photography keeps us going back out to photograph the world around us, hoping that we come away with a few spectacular photographs. Kim has never let us down with her beautiful words and photos that continue to inspire us... And for a sixty six year old and some fifty years with a camera in my hands... Well it's a wonderful thing to both inspire and be inspired by so many awesome people who share this passion.
      Be well and love too all

    When I go to the field, I like to try to let the image find me. When it does, I try to capture it. Somehow I feel that exposing the beauty around me is more homogenous with nature than trying to create it. I don't feel like I can create beauty any better than nature itself. So for me, slowing down, and looking at the small things, works better. Letting the tiny and still things appear to me just works better for me.

    This resonated with me - why do we rush? It drives me mad when I ruin trips out by hurrying and getting stressed for shots. I have found I can force myself to slow by going to just one place and staying there and not allowing myself to walk around. I find the photo there even if it takes hours, but at least I am not dashing about.

    At your 7-minute mark where you show a side-by-side comparison of two images and talk/ask about what we feel when we see them, it solidified a thought I had from earlier when you took the colorful photo on the left... The thought is this... in the same way hearing a song will bring back feelings, not so much the song itself, but what your state of being was when you heard the song the first time or when the song was first popular, so it is when you look at you OWN images. You remember so much about the experience of taking them. If you're like me, you will see a photo of yours and almost instantly recognize it because of what you were feeling when you created it.
    And for you, in the case of the beautifully colorful, and I'd say serene photo, you were feeling anything but that when taking it. You said you felt frenetic, rushed, under pressure, etc... That doesn't mean WE'LL feel that way when looking at it though...but it will remind YOU of how you felt at that time. And to your point, and the point of your video, HOW you feel as you approach your photography is critically important. You state that it's important for your creativity. I'd say it's important for reasons even more important than that.
    If you're doing photography as a job, then like many jobs you may feel pressure to perform, produce, exceed... But if photography is something you do because it's a way for you to express yourself artistically or emotionally, or it's a hobby, a passion, a great excuse to be outside, then you definitely have hit on an important mental adjustment that you must, and want to make. Your reference to contemplative photography, which is something of a genre or observational technique or mindset, then I think you're on the right track to fulfilling your desire to recalibrate your approach and process of experiencing your surroundings and creating the sort of images that you will look BACK on and feel the sort of feelings you're wanting to feel.

    Hi Kim, as always great to see you on a sunday morning, in the beginning of your talk, the tall grass against the sky caught my eye, thinking that would make an interesting shot, the two images side by side, the one on the left has the beautiful sky, the other has it's own beauty. All shots we take are different, none are bad, we all feel something different from the shot we take. I look at nature as an amazing work from the Lord, and it all works together and for a reason. I find just being in nature, the outdoors, regardless of the shot i take, healing, relaxing, I am at peace. I wrote this note, before the end, where you photograph the grasses. You Kim, are a blessing to us that watch you and your work. Be safe and have a blessed week.

    very nice video, sometimes we all forget what we want to do. I love nature photography, from Macro to Landscape, and only walking in the nature is so relaxing. A few weeks ago I had a few days off from work and in the early morning I was in a very popular national park her in Belgium, and the first 2 hours i saw 2 people (walking with their dogs) and no one else. so quite, so calming and relaxing, i sat on the ground more than an half hour waiting for a good light (which never shows up) and also no people around me, just some birds. and then when i was ready to go back to my car, the people came in, first 2 walkers then another few, a little group of older people. when I got back to the car park it was full with cars, when I arrived a few hours earlier it was empty. I took some photos, not my best (far from) but I felt so relaxed and calm.
    the next days I walked in a forest for 2 hours, the light and conditions very no good, and I took that day not a single picture, but still it was calming and relaxing (despite some mosquitos).
    Lets not forget why we do nature photography, not only to take beautiful pictures (it is always nice to take a good picture of course) but to enjoy the beautiful nature.

There is a pressure to seek out and capture this light, of a blazing sunrise. The other photo is more personal. I’ve been following you since the summer and appreciate your contemplative thoughts on photography. That's what I'm trying to do. I walk, I stroll and I photograph what comes to me that touches me. The second image is kind of sad it makes me think of the end of the day, or end of a holiday, when you just take that last picture before you get in the car and go home. I bet you had no idea that you were doing some splendid "preaching" about anxiety vs. peace🙂 and chasing the light/Light. So easy to connect with the Creator of all creation, yourself included, by capturing such beauty that obliterates anxiety. Been there, done that. I can clearly see and hear how you’re going through something with your photography and I find that very inspiring - as a fellow photographer myself I can understand the need to have a feeling with once photos.
    But honestly I LOVE the first photograph 🥹 but I also believe you when you say, that you feel like it was rushed as you’re looking at it, Which is valid. I experience that myself sometimes, and it can be very frustrating and unnerving when you know anyone would really like it.. but somehow that feeling you get when you see it… just isn’t right.. and that is okay. I know you know this, but I’m simply confirming it. 🙌🏼

    It seems that's just the nature of photography. Sometimes we have amazing light but know it won't last long. And some subjects only give you a short time to photograph. Birds for instance. But it is nice to be in those times where no rush is needed. Macro photography a good example.

    Loved this video. I can see a difference in the images just as you describe. When you put up the first image of the huts with all the colour I thought, “it’s not doing it for me”. Then I saw the “calmer” image and immediately felt something for the photo. Well done.

    I hear you - thanks so much for sharing. I spent several hours being photographically mindful this afternoon - brilliant time, and I SO needed it. Now it's back to my thesis (because I have less than two months left to complete writing up a five-year project). I need to MAKE the time to be photographically mindful every day until I'm done.

    Thanks Kim, this is a great video, and I love the comments that mirror your feelings, as well as my own. I market my photography as Unrushed Images, to remind me to do exactly that. Breathe, be mindful and take a moment. Sometimes that frantic, anxious energy can be a positive, but I find it too distracting when I’m looking for images.

    Thanks for sharing your photographic journey. Glad you are happy taking time to compose images that have meaning for you. Your images very pleasing. When in the field shooting nature we are often exposed to so many beautiful scenes is is difficult to isolate and focus on a single idea. I review my work at the end of a trip to the field. I keep the images I like and think about what would make them more pleasing to me. Then I try to think about this while shooting on a subsequent field trip. Gradually my work gravitates toward my idealized vision. I am beginning to do the review while at the scene. Because the light changes we are often rushing. Remember there are many paths to the top of the mountain. Keep shooting and sharing.

I wasn't enjoying my work because I wasn't being mindful about it and my final output wasn't something I was happy with. I think the first photo is nice because the colours, but second one tells a story. Sometimes we have to difference between a scene worth of a photo or just a really amazing scene to captivate. A big hug, Kim :)

    Ansel Adams once said - Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter. I am not a religious person at all - but totally understand this statement. Because I think this is relevant to the 1st image... there would hardly be a shutterbug out there that would not be excited by that 1st light - it is vibrant, it attacks the senses with absolute AWE. It simply tells a different story to the secondary process of creating a story in an image. Both have a place. Both a differing emotional reaction to the resulting image. Both honest, just different :)
    Cheers, Andy

      Yes - it certainly is. I had never thought of the language used in photography until I heard a photographer speak about it in a presentation last year. It was a big lightbulb moment for me. I don't enjoy shooting, taking of capturing. I want to make, create and connect. We are all different though but it is interesting to think about what words we use and when 😊

  • @frankinblackpool
    @frankinblackpool Před 9 měsíci +5

    Over the last few weeks or months I noticed a slow subtle change in your personality/presentation but I could not put my finger on it. Nor was it my place to know why. I am just a casual observer of many CZcams's that I have free access to graze upon with no emotional investment, other than my time in front of the screen.
    Got to admit, I did miss coming in from work last Sunday morning to see what you've been up to and not finding anything. I just hoped that you were recharging your batteries.
    Today's episode, to me, seems like you've had what could be described as a "Light-bulb" moment where you've worked out where you fit in with your passion, purpose and career all rolled into one. Some would call it a Work/Life Balance. You looked calm, relaxed and content. What more could anybody ask for, other than to feel contentment?
    As for your Beach Hut photos, I prefer option "B". It has relaxing balanced horizontal symmetrical lines with a light airy feel. Option "A" looks like a promotion poster for a fight down at Mordor in the Lord of the Rings and all Orc's are welcome to bring an axe.
    Quality not quantity. And if it takes a few weeks, or months, before your next episode then that's Ok. It's what the "Like" button is for, to keep me updated of my free content to graze upon.
    Not many people would fully realise or comprehend how much time and effort goes into filming, editing and then publishing a short episode lasting just a few minutes.
    Its good to see a happy content face with one of those "LightBulb" moments.

    When you showed those 2 sunrise photos side by side my first thought was the one on the left was much more vibrant and exciting but when you mentioned it looks like a snap shot I realized you were absolutely right. It is nice but it's a photo anyone would have taken. The second one really is much better. Every once in a while I still tend to see 'pretty' and become anxious to photograph 'pretty'. Over time I've gotten better at stopping myself from reacting to scenes instead of being creative but walking away is so hard sometimes. On the other hand, is it so wrong to just take the shot sometimes and get it out of your system? At least you had a moment of excitement taking it, didn't you? :)

    Actually, we can create from ANY state of mind. It just produces a different kind of image. Kinda like the phrase, Just because we COULD does not mean we SHOULD. People always say the starving artist produces the best work. That is creating from a state of fear! It no longer is question of should. Instead it is a state of have to, which is a form of fear. Fight or flight! The nervous energy harnessed into a powerful positive force. Our emotions are the greatest tools we have available for creating. We must learn how to use them…even fear can be used. The minute we stop using emotions to create, then we have lost the whole purpose in taking the photos. I would rather be fearful and energized, than cold and calculating, when taking photos.
    Without emotions playing their part in our photography, we are just documenting.

    Sunrise and sunset are fleeting moments in time, as are all moments in time, but the colours, that they offer up, if the conditions are right, are even more fleeting. I'd do your contemplative breathing and calmness before or after, but it does take some hustle to get to the proper place to get the composition that speaks to you the most, which also hopefully can be done before the light kicks off. I'd rather have not gone out at all, than to have gone out and intentionally missed the light of an epic sunrise or sunset and settled for less dramatic light than what was just a few minutes before... The missed opportunity when I was actually there would haunt me, more if I was there than if I wasn't even out and wasn't aware of what I'd missed.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  Před 9 měsíci

      Very interesting to hear your thoughts. It shows the beauty of being human - we are all different. I love to sit and watch the light change just as much as to photograph it but with you I can see the photography comes first and foremost. I guess it all depends on what each individual wants to experience from the moment.

    • @spidersj12
      @spidersj12 Před 9 měsíci

      @kimgrantphotography the way I see it you can't relive it later in all its vibrancy if you didn't capture it in some none ephemeral medium. Not can you share it with others if that's one purpose. Mine is too capture that moment in time regardless of the integrity of my memory in the future. Due in years to come out might loose some of the meaning of removing the moment but at least it's captured for posterity...

    Great sunrise pictures I mainly use three lenses now a 16-50 2.8 a 55-300 3.5 - 5.6 and a 150 -450 zoom I use the last 2 lenses for wildlife the 16 -50 for landscapes and low light photography as it fairly good with flares and star bursts. The problem I have is I am mostly with a hiking group so I can occasionally stop to photograph a scene hand held. I would love the luxury of time to take in a scene like you have maybe one day I wish

    I usually don’t comment on images because I know my opinion matters more to me than you, but you asked for it. 1) both photos are great. 2) the red photo is a conflict. The huts are one image and the clouds are the other. My eyes bounce between them, like watching tennis. That’s not bad or good it just is, and that’s what makes it. 3) The blue photo calm. It’s a single image with its elements revolving around each other like watching a windmill ( one of the old time Dutch ones ). My eyes follow a path not directions.
    The engineer in me can take the check list photo and it looks great, but the comfort photo is remembered.
