- ...Updated and corrected some things in this transcription as of 3/30/2012...
Here's a video of my transcription of Chris Potter's solo saxophone rendition of the jazz tune "Tune-Up." This comes from a masterclass he gave in London, November 12, 2011. Thanx to Dean Mongerio for video taping this performance and posting it on CZcams.
This was one of the most difficult transcriptions that I have ever done but it taught me a lot. I wrote this transcription in a way that would make it easier to read so if you have done or plan on doing your own transcription I'm sure some of the rhythms I wrote may not line up with yours.
You can find this transcription and many others at my website: www.charlesmcneal.com. - Hudba
he's out of this world.
I try to write out transcriptions so they are readable (for me..). Chris definitely displaces the barline and the changes in this solo performance. I put double barlines where I felt the top of each chorus was but they may not line up to how you hear the phrases. I might read through this solo again at a later date and make some more corrections....
Is that a saxophone or a nuclear weapon?
WMD
BOTH
Spot on! awesome job and for a 10+ minute solo! holy crap! In regards to the solo: It always amazes me how "simple" some of these ideas really are when you finally get them on paper. Of course not so simple to think up and execute flawlessly w/ great sound and time feel but Major triads can really sound cool in the right hands!!! I hope you get a publishing deal for all this work my goodness this is better than some hal leonard stuff!
what a wonderful episode of music
Yeah this season of music had a lot of classics
I'm completely amazed at Chris Potter and equally amazed at Charles McNeal! Thank you for doing this!
Dear Charles,
You have made an awesome job. It is so great to have the opportunity to be able to read the music while Chris is playing. I can easily imagine how hard it was to transcribe that solo!!
I'm hearing Giant Steps at 5:30!
Benton Pastorik coltrane changes indeed!
Coltrane, My Shining Hour solo quote at 1:36!
WOW. Amazing transcription. Seriously, your ears are incredible to be able to transcribe this so accurately. WOW
My one dissapointment, as a brass player, is that while I can play all these notes, I cannot do all the little split fingerings for tonal variety and overtone playing that Potter does here. Great transcription!
What an effort. Both by Chris and the transcriber. Phenomenal.
His entire solo sounds so much like Rollins!
Just listening to this hurts my chops
Amazing phrasing and timing !!! Thank You Mr McNeal.
He's so in control it out of control
Wow, what an amazing job you've done with this transcription! You must have scratched your head quite a few times as to how to notate some of this stuff! You're the freakin' man!
Astounding work. Amazing. I will be studying this for quite a while. Thanks.
How’d you make out?
@@kchappelle Life long study.
Thanx for checking out the website. Yeah, I do spend a lot of time transcribing but I really do enjoy it, plus I've gotten pretty fast. I still have time to have a life...sort of...LOL
Fantastic job...really enjoyed reading and listening through it all
Just checked your website... pretty impressed by the amount of transcriptions... mad props!!
Charles McNeal is a fricken genius!
Thank you very much. It's very helpful to me
I'll never forget your help Mr. McNeal
I think it's time to get the hammer on my old saxophone 😎
Great transcription 👏
You are really a top level musician. Many compliments for the "craxy" trsnscription.
Chris seems to have touched all the (major) great tenor masters in sound and quotes: Hawkins, Byas, Rollins, Mobley, Brecker and yes, John William Coltrane himself - not forgetting the virtuosic Michael Brecker.
It's the instructor's call for all to PRACTICE a la Chris Potter - and Michael Brecker, and John Coltrane and Charlie Parker before him (Chris Potter)
Well done, Mr. Potter!
Wow, thank you so much for doing this
Por MUUUUUCHO lo mejor que he escuchado. Si algún saxofonista desea aprender a tocar bien. CON SOLO ESTUDIAR ESTO BASTA.
Truly gifted and passionate
chris knows how to ruin my dreams
or revive them
how Chris Potter tunes up!

Overtone section at 7:13 is absolutely absurd. Literally inhuman control of the instrument.

What the fuck? Unique!!
Hey Don... no microphone into Finale (I wouldn't even know how to do that...LOL) Just listening to the solo and inputting 1 note at a time....

Aaron Barber, here you go:
Chris Potter's solo on Tune Up
Wow -- it would take me six decades to learn this. Amazing.
Thanks so much for your reply. My question wasn't meant to be critical. I was just curious. I truly appreciate the work you've done. I'm a long way from being able to transcribe a solo such as this. I could get the notes, but the rythms would tie me up a lot. Kudos to you. I plan to study this solo. Would you be interested in any analysis of mine?
it's great.
great artist musician
Woo !
Dude, Sick!!!
9:39 best part :)
Chip, good to see you're staying busy! We haven't talked in what, 12 years? SHeesh time goes
Redonculous! Would have liked to have had chord changes over the top with countdown changes also just to see how the lines relate but... Awesome work dude!
I wanna see someone learn this.
Charles, you should contact Sher Music and Chris to do the official solo book (if there isn't one already....). Fantastic work!
As to Chris, he's a fantastic player. Here, I hear Giant Steps and Sonny Rollins...

MAd props I thought about doing this quickly gave up before I pulled up finale...
Charles, to transcribe, did you set a microphone up into finale?? By the way an incredible amount of work with all of your transcriptions. Also incredibly generous posting them for free....All the best to you!.......CHEERS!

Good god.
!Que Barbaro! Intocable pues, si acaso llego a la mitad jajajaja.
Wow is this one available on the site somewhere?
do you know where I could get sheet music for chris potter sun king
Unbelievable collection of transcriptions on your website. By the way, what do you do in your free time?
Are those changes in meter accurate? Or is it easier to notate that way? Rather than passing phrases over the barline etc..?
Best. Username. Ever.
This is a great transcription but just looking at the bar lines and aafkafbakffaka comparing mine to yours is a pain. I think 4 bars per system works better. Great job though and thanks for sharing

Se eu conseguir tirar o son agudo que esses cara tiram! rasparei ainda mais minha careca?
insane
Do you know where I can get a transcription of Coltrane's "Countdown" solo? Do you have that? Can't find it anywhere scored for tenor.
Did you scribe this all by ear first?
How does he create that effect at 6:27
KingGoldingIV Overtones. Play the note you want to play and switch to the overtone fingering, it'll give it a slightly different sound.
can u pls transcribe for alto sax
Not human...
how did you make this?
1:44
That outro...
Anyone else catch the bit giant steps he threw in around 5:28 ?
