  • The Qin Dynasty, founded by Qin Shi Huang in 221 BCE, marked China's first unified imperial state. Qin Shi Huang centralized power, diminishing the influence of the aristocracy and standardizing laws, currencies, weights, and measures. The dynasty is renowned for monumental projects like the initial construction of the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army. However, its Legalist policies, which emphasized strict laws and harsh punishments, led to widespread dissent. The dynasty's centralized bureaucracy laid the groundwork for future Chinese states, but internal revolts and a lack of effective succession planning caused its collapse just 15 years later in 206 BCE.
