- San Diego is full of canyons with stunning views and amazing places to discover. While hiking the Ho Chi Minh Trail in La Jolla another San Diego secret was discovered - the Mushroom House.
It is a futuristic-looking beach house built for the owner of a snack food brand. The unique mushroom-shaped building is hiding at the bottom of the cliffs south of the Black's Beach. The house was designed and built by architect Dale Naegle in 1968. The original name was the Bell Pavillion. The owner was Sam Bell of Bell’s Potato Chips (Bell Brand Snack Foods). He wanted a futuristic-looking house that could withstand naturally occurring rock slides, earthquakes, and waves.
The house could be accessed from the cliffs via a nearly vertical tramway running almost 300 feet down the cliff. It was also used as a guest house, offering a 180-degree view from Torrey Pines State Park to La Jolla.
