Very good and educational video, 24mm is great lens for creative photography.
I watched this a couple of days ago and I forgot to comment, so I'm back! Great video Simon. You have a great way of explaining concepts and use visuals for reinforcement. I thought the technique of enlarging/moving the boat to illustrate your point was excellent and so professionally produced. I expect nothing less when watching your videos. No pressure... ;-)
I really appreciate you returning again to comment. I thank you, and the CZcams algorithm thanks you 😀 No, really, your continued support is appreciated, thank you Sir! And, er, no pressure here 😬
Professional teaching delivered with style. A series of these would sit perfectly on Netflix or Amazon prime. Excellent work, great cloning skills to show differing compositions. I watched this last night and watching again. Everyone can learn and take something from you opinion your teaching. Excellent 👍
Wow, thanks Mali! This was a new approach to creating some video content, and it was rather enjoyable to make, so I really appreciate your kind words and input, that may now encourage me to doing more 😀👍
Simon Burn you have a smooth and relaxed way to deliver and make you see the answer to the composition. Without condescension. You did one a while back on Dartmoor I think it was. With the rocks in the foreground. Also love the new branding and orange intro cards duotone moving clips! Lovely touch
@@MaliDaviesPhotography REALLY appreciate the kind words Mali, you're giving me some ideas now! Thank you Sir!
Simon Burn hey I don’t piss about me 👍 take care, stay safe 😁😁😁😁😂🙏
@@MaliDaviesPhotography Oh, I know you don't, that's what's so great about your feedback 😀👍🙏
Awesome video Simon. You're an excellent teacher. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
Thank you Barbara, much appreciated, I do hope you got some value from watching 😀
In the chat on hierarchy, i think you are spot on. if its further back, i feel the wee hut fights for attention. Don't like that wee hut! Burn it down and go back and re-shoot! I do like the 2 2.8 shots, not the focus stacked one! Really liking your style of location to studio to location! Out of your favourites, that 2nd one is a wall print! Lovely vlog!
Thanks Adam, i'll remember to take some matches next time I'm there :-) I'm glad you like the studio to location thing. it was done because I didn't have enough time on location because of a howling storm brewing... plus it wasn't a planned video, just made it up while I was there, lol. But I think I may be doing this some more.
Excellent explanations and insights Simon. You do a brilliant job of walking the viewer through your thought processes. Nice images too 👌
Great Vlog , really good explanations on composition and real world examples
I like the images you got
Great new I intro sequence and end card titles.. slick
Thank you Darren, thought I'd try something different content-wise, and am currently playing with my branding :-) BTW, I'm looking for a block of time to binge watch your US adventures on a TV! Cheers!
Very informative. I love to understand how and why other photographers compose their shots.
Thank you Dave. A few people had expressed an interest in knowing how I think, so this was for them. I agree with you, even though I've been doing photography for a long time, I'm always keen to understand how others see and think. There are always new things to learn :-)
I’m subscribing coz Chris Sale told me to 😁 and he wasn’t wrong... great channel 👌
Wow, I owe Chris a pint! Probably more than one. Thanks for joining in, i'm open to any ideas for content to include in future vids, so don't be shy 😀
Very interesting explanation of your thought process behind each composition. I don’t think I had heard or seen this location before on a video. Thanks for sharing Simon. I think it was a lovely result.
Thanks Diego, it's an unusual place, officially England's only desert I believe. I was only there of an hour and a half, will need to go back!
Simon, really great video. Some really great info for me to keep in mind when I'm using wide angle lenses. Some great photos and broll as well btw.
Very interesting with the DoF experiments 👍 a landscape approach you don’t see so much. Nice 😊
Thanks Dave, I figured it was time to experiment and try new things 📷
Just fantastic Simon, some awesome shots that stick out 0:44, really captured well 2:22 i agree with 7:49 so i guess i have 3 favs.
@ehjoe Thank you for watching and your comment, always appreciated! Yes, I was very happy with the results from that outing, considering I was only there for about an hour and twenty minutes total. Definitely need to go back and spend more time there.
Do you use your wide angle with a shallow depth of field for creative effect? Did you agree with my thinking about balance of elements within the frame? Would love to hear your thoughts :-)
Simon Burn yea I really enjoy sitting the subject in focus and the rest our. Great technique for street photography, really adds atmosphere and depth.
Nice channel Simon 👍🏽 subbed. I love Dungeness I’ve got some great images from there.
Missed this message earlier, thanks so much for the comment and sub 🙏
Very enjoyable Simon. That location has been on my wants for years but have never had the reason to get along there... I should make the effort before it really gets dilapidated. Your productions always have a great flow through the episodes and this is no different. The choice of mono for these images was spot on and I reckon you should have revisited for the stormy sky!
Thanks for coming back to finish watching Alan! I was there about 8 or 10 years ago, and there were more boats that looked really nice with lots of weathered paint in various colours. I noticed there weren't there this time round, so you should make a trip before there's nothing left to shoot! Cheers!
I shot this same boat a few years ago...about this time of year (February) effectively with a 20mm lens ditched the 3 legged thing I had with me...for a low hand held shot....
The wind never stops there does it................
Ah, a 20mm would be nice! Yes, it is windy. I haven't been back for a couple of years now, and heard that iconic boat had been totally destroyed by fire. Very sad. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment, much appreciated 🙂
I'm new here, probably via Mali's channel, and I like what I see. Thanks for an interesting tutorial, and introducing yet another place to put on my list of locations to visit!
Hi Neil, thanks for stopping by! Yes, put this place on your to visit list, it's really unusual, and actually England's only designated desert.
Very original content Simon, making it very easy for the viewer to follow. Good quality but you know that 👍👍😬 I felt the image with the boat out of focus worked the best with the wench sharp as you can make out the boat but yet adds mystery
Thanks James. That's interesting feedback, and I would agree with you about the boat being out of focus, it does tell a strong story, the boat doesn't need to be in focus for that. 😀
Informative video Simon, thanks. Totally agree with your comments on balance and hierarchy in these images (which illustrate it perfectly). I don't think I do use my 16-35 as creatively as I could, generally using it to simply capture a wider scene at F11. Need to work on this. Please tell me you didn't place those 3 pieces of wood in the foreground on the 7:48 image 😉
Thanks Jamie! No, I didn't place any wood, it was there! There's actually a lot of compositions to be had, there is debris everywhere. I move a coloured piece of rope out of one shot though 😬
I cant say that I think too much about the balance of elements. I tend to shoot what feels and looks right. Nice to hear some theory behind the practice though. Your video production is superb.
Hey Mark, I agree, I don't think too much either about composition, it's instinctive after a while, but it was an interesting exercise to try and reverse-engineer the shots. Cheers!
Hey, thanks for this video. I just switched to a new system, and don't yet have the ultra-wide that I'm used to. 24 is my current widest lens, so this is just the inspiration I was looking for.
Thanks Scott, so pleased to hear this video provided some inspiration! Enjoy the new system 🙂
Simon you are so bloody professional this is a one of video mate you made this unique never have I ever seen anyone do this with showing the difference you nailed it in every way. And I have been there I love love love that place. I would love to run a workshop there fancy helping ??
Great video, was at this location last week!..I took photos of both the wrench and the boat but not together missed that one....Thank you from a new subby...)
Hi Steven, it's a great spot, isn't it! Thanks for watching, and the sub, cheers! 👍😀
Hi Simon. Nice video at Dungeness, always enjoy videos from there! I only live 10minutes up the road from Dungeness, wondered where you're based?
Thanks Jamie. When i'm in the UK, i'm based in Folkestone. Where are you?
Man of international mystery! Live down in St Mary's bay. Might be cool to shoot together some time.
@@JamieGillies Ah, not too far away. Happy to meet up and do some shooting sometime!
Nice video - I did a video on minimalism from the same place a month or so back - it's quite magical!
Excellent video. Was that a slowed-down version of 'Who Killed Mr. Moonlight' by Bauhaus at 0:30. One of my favourite sounds from the 80s. Anyway, thanks for the video. Learned a bunch.
Hi Muhammad, appreciate you taking time to watch and comment. Not sure what the music was, I got it from a royalty free audio library, so it's probably a coincidence it sounds like a Bauhaus track.
What kind of tripod are you using?
It was a little lightweight Gitzo travel tripod, with a cheapy Amazon arca-type head.
Great video mate. Popped over from #nosmallcreator - interesting to see you down in Kent. Not too far from me. Worth the sub for sure, great to connect 👌🏼
@@AndyGreenWildlife Oh, not far at all. I have a home in Canada, so not in Kent too much these days, but try to spend time there every three or four months.
Simon Burn oh wow. Was just saying the other day how much I want to go to Canada with my camera 👌🏼
@@AndyGreenWildlife Well, if you come over to Toronto, i'll show you the best spots to shoot. We're in Peter McKinnon territory!
Great video ! :D
I myself only have a 12-60mm (panasonic, so it's 24-120 on full frame) but have thought about getting a 25mm f1.7 (so like 50mm on full frame), but would it be good for travel photoagraphy/travel portraits ? what do you think ? :D
great video ! almost 500 subs, keep it up ;D You got my support !
PS. I feel bad for asking but mind checking out my channel ? If not then that's totally fine ! ;D
Thanks Sebastian, yes, I would say having a wide angle lens is really useful for travel photography. I certainly get a lot use from mine. For portraits though, I'd be leaning more towards an 85mm. When I travel light, I have a 35-70mm f/2.8 lens, which is a really good compromise, as it allows you to shoot relatively wide, but also at the 70mm end it's really good for portraits. 90% of travel portraits I've ever shot was do done using this lens. It sounds like the lens you have can give you the range, but I'm guessing you want something a little faster and better quality. I'm getting ready to fly back to the UK today, so give me a day or so before I am able to check out your channel. Cheers!
Nice channel, I've subscribed. I think you could get alot more subscribers if you were wearing womens lingerie.
Clear and sensible advice using one of my favourite locations. A model of how these things should be done.
Thank you! I love Dungeness, so much to shoot. I'd recommend anyone in the SE or beyond to get down there.
