Nice breakdown of blade types. Thank you. I started shaving with a straight edge razor about four years ago after becoming fed up with the shortcomings of cartridge razors. There is always a new version of your razor which means you eventually you need to buy the new handle as the old cartridge becomes less available. They feel like holding a piece of garbage or recycling up to your face. The worst is how unclean the cartridge is at the end of one shave. In between all those blades will be clogged with; hair, skin and soap. How am I supposed to get even two uses from a cartridge at that rate?
I started with a Boker 5/8 round nose stainless blade. It was great for learning. More recently I got a 6/8 Dovo 88 with Spanish tip and carbon steel. It is quite an upgrade mostly because the additional weight makes easy work of my tougher whiskers. Depending on my beard style I have also used a Rolls razor for shaping. It has a short wedge ground stainless blade on a skinny little handle. I didn’t realize that you would have recommended a wedge grind for details. The Spanish tip is really the only type of straight edge I know to get the concave curve of my friendly lamb chops nice and clean. I also use a DE razor for this beard type. Many of them are pretty good for shaping too.

I’m wanting to get into straight razor shaving however being an injured firefighter with my left hand really not functional so well I wouldn’t know where to start or begin! Glad you are in Connecticut, me too right in Seymour! Thank you for all the help
I shave exclusively right handed by flipping the razor up or down. Left hand only stretches the skin. If you can do at least that much, you can do it.

I have a Taylor's 1000 razor that I've used for years. Tried a Dovo, but I found it was very unforgiving in that I had nicks from it.. I gave it a good try, but went back to the Sheffield blade, and haven't had any nicks since.

Perhaps you could help me understand my experience I am new to trying straight razor Shaving and my first experience with this I went to a barber shop to see how it would work out and I did enjoy it however by the next morning under my chin throughout the under Shaving area was very raw a hurt the rest of my face was smooth and felt fine?

The razor I purchased is perfect for the beginner. I take my time as I practice the different hand positions. It takes a little getting use to but, is satisfying using a straight razor and now I can save money as well as opposed to buying disposable.
Hopefully you will enjoy using a straight razor as well.
@@alanaya6786 I just spoke on the phone with an agent from the factory Dovo Solingen in Germany and it was great the advise she has given me over the quality of the strait razor. It is amazing! Hello. I want to enter the straight razor world, by purchasing mt first straight razor. Thank you for all the information. But my concern of keeping me back is the honing need. In some countries you have specialists to do this for you. In Denmark perhaps there are perhaps there are not 🤔 And I don't like the idea of posting the blade, shipping, waitting to come back etc. AND I REALLY WANT TO LEARN TO HONE MYSELF THE RAZOR IF NEEDED AFTER 6 OR MORE MONTHS AFTER. But is it something I can learn without destroying the blade? Any lessons online apart from the plenty CZcamsrs out there?
My point is...I want one but without depending on distance paying service to have my razor top notch.
Of course taking care of the straight razor in between before honing....like stropping it etc I can do that.

Does carbon steel need to be sharpened after each shave??
Nope. U have to strope it b4 each shave. Sharpening gotta be done 2-3 times a year.
The video seems to ignore common variations and replaces them with much more obscure ones as being "standard".
Since when was 3/8th a common size? 7/8 razors are significantly more common.
And why omit extra hollow/"singing" grinds but mention wedges? Outside of the weird and wonderful world of custom razors and really old vintage razors, wedges are pretty much extinct - even the dovo 42 isn't really a wedge - you can clearly see the concavity in the video - its just a really fat, semi-hollow grind.
I would also argue that carbon isn't higher maintenance than steel. There is a trade-off between rust-resistance and hardness. You need to pay more attention to avoid rust with a carbon steel but its also much harder and will retains a razor sharp edge for much longer. Stainless is more rust resistant, so not as much care to avoid rusting, but it is a bit softer so the edge will end up needing refreshing more often. It pretty much balances out. Carbon wins out in my opinion because the hardness significantly reduces the chance of the edge getting so dull that you need to resort to sharpening on a stone - you can keep a carbon edge sharp on strops and abrasives for perpetuity. With stainless, you sorta have to go to a stone so say goodbye to the nice factory geometry and (overtime) flexibility.
Your email link to dovo is wrong or closed. I have a rough spot in my new Bismarck razor. I’ve stropped it over and over. When do you know if you have to hone it? I’m new to the whole straight razor thing and didn’t expect trouble from a $180 razor right from the start.
Dovo Razer are often not shave ready at delivery. I am german and most ppl i know sharpen this razer direcly after the unboxing. After the first sharpening they are lasting 3-6 month. 2 shaves a week 15 strokes on the leather each side bevor shaving.
@@Lycanta Thank you so much for the information. I bought my own stones (1K/3K/6K/12K) and honed it myself. It took the nicks out and made a great improvement and I am enjoying the best shaves ever. Thanks again!
