This pillar in Bengaluru’s culinary landscape has always had only four items on its menu! For 5 decades Brahmin’s Coffee Bar has been serving up the softest idlis, crunchy vadas, and of course, thick, strong coffee in South Bengaluru.
In this episode of Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers’ Editor Kripal Amanna visits the famous coffee bar and samples everything on the menu (all four items that is), which consists of the Idli Vada, the Khara Bath, and the Kesari Bath. He also learns of the history of the restaurant and why this family-run establishment has resolved to stick to the only four-item menu they started with.

Idli and Vada
the idli is unbelievably soft, pillowy, and melts in your mouth with no effort! this is in contrast to the perfect crunch of the vada. the inside of the vada is almost cloud-like, speckled with slivers of coconut, chillies, and curry leaves. the chutney is spicy and slightly minty. this dish, especially the idli is a revelation!

this khara bath literally melts in your mouth. it is studded with all sorts of aromatics, fried lentils, carrots and peas for texture. with the signature chutney, this dish is divine!

laden with ghee, raisins, nuts, and pineapple, and studded with cloves. the sweetness balanced with the acidity of the pineapple and the toasty notes of the cashew. the astringent flavours of the clove readies your palate for the next bite. every bite is delightful.

After viewing Amanna's video, I visited Brahmin Coffee Bar, which has self-service and no tables and chairs. Idli was truly very soft and Chutney was served unlimited. Vada was also good and crispy. Coffee was very good. Worth a visit.

I studied at the school adjacent to this hotel and want to tell you that the size of the hotel was 1/3rd of what you see today. The taste of the dishes hasn’t changed a bit. In fact, this hotel is on-route from airport to my home. Each time my early morning flight lands, I make it a point to skip the (stupid) breakfast on the plane to eat my favourite idli and vada here and end it with coffee.

My favourite place and I have been eating here since 1995 and trust me the taste and service hasn't change one bit!!! The Vada is mind blowing and have eaten in many places in Namma Bengaluru, but the Vada is the best in town. Hands down....awesome

And, for me this episode is the one that i ve enjoyed the most. Establishment like this makes namma Bengaluru a very special one for all simple, traditional food breakfast lovers. There are thousands of hotels serving too many varieties of food items each day with bad quality. Many people have to learn from these establishments. Today you touched my heart reviewing Idli Vada at Brahmin's coffee bar.
I churned out Idli dosa batters literally in ton at a time but I know most difficult batter to mqke is Idli batter.Dosa batter is very easy but not Idli batter. I loved Adiga families philosophy which appeals dearly to my Japanese soul.Yes I have been trained by Japanese Guru and his mantra was simple. Make only one thing and spend your life perfecting it.

Brilliant homage to some amazing idlis and chutney at Brahmins. I'd not gone until a few months ago and it was a real pleasant surprise. That being said, I think the likes of Taaza Thindi do an equally good job, so we have a choice of the best idli/ vada chutney combo now.

Things that take special mention are the cutlery style, minty color and taste to the chutney and minimalistic menu. Will visit when I go to Blore. I'm a vegetarian from Hyderabad.
