Hate to say it but I live in Europe and we still had to play this song. It was super easy so I don’t understand how secondary schoolers could mess it up.
They’re clapping because the band is addressing the different branches throughout the song. It is expected to clap for them and is disrespectful if not done. I’m sure the band director knew this.

My band played it for veterans on veterans day.
Its not perticularly a march becauee it can also be played for a veterans day concert
Band did good but my god I know the band and director had to be mad at the audience for the clapping through the entire thing
