Man, this is really motivating to know your story. Moving into far and foreign country with no English and no native language and barely anything in your pocket, yet learning both English and Mandarin and also working up for something in life. Best wishes.
Also I personally learn Japanese now and one important thing to understand what you're learning and to memorize stuff in my opinion - try not to directly translate what you think in your language into a new language. "Thinking" in different language is the key to understand how it works. So you need to change the way you think in order to understand, for example, proper grammar and sentence building.

Learning Mandarin isn't easy. Mike says, himself, that he came to China knowing no English, very little of his native Cameroon language and some French. So, he was a pretty blank slate and was forced to be able to communicate in Chinese to survive. Most people aren't coming at it that way.

Hello Mike, I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina, I love your videos, even more so the perspective of calm and such a panoramic vision of society that constructive and conscious criticism, the calmness to speak generates even more desire to pay attention to your reference or perspective of things, I like it, I hope you continue like this and continue showing a lot of China, which is a giant terrain to explore PS: don't give so much importance to the haters who write to you in your videos, those who criticize talk more about them than about you , and people will always try to point the finger at each mistake, hugs, I hope that at some point you can put subtitles in Spanish, since the CZcams translator translates it badly, big hug ♥

It's a worthy story to be told. 👍 And thanks for the language tips, and my only question would be, when you watch the Chinese movies did you have English subtitles to display and were you able to pause and/or rewind the movie? Keep up the great journey, I truly enjoy seeing the majority of people being friendly and respectful, because you have taken the time to dive deeper into their world through their language. It was the honest and candid way you were talking about the reality of your experiences in China and some of the story of your life there. I agree with you that it is better to learn a language like you learned your own, than going to school because I speak two additional languages and basically I am self-taught. You have to be willing to use what you know and love the language and the people. It's not all about ability because Americans tend to be the only monolingual society It is common for Europeans and Africans and Asians, to speak more than one language, and it cannot be because they have ability & Americans do not. It's more about a desire to learn and a willingness to try, and a lack of arrogance about one's own language.

So just ignore those people and listen to people who understand and appreciate reality. Your comments in response to those things are right on the ball. The people are curious, and want to know about you, why you are there, what do you do in their community, if you are just padding through. That is simple human nature. What is different from us, interests us. Then when they hear you speaking their language, the are completely surprised and want to take you in and to become more acquainted with you. They know that it's difficult to learn their language and culture, so they are stimulated to help you to learn more. They don't care that your grammar is not perfect at the beginning, because they will lovingly correct you if you say something incorrectly or wrong. Your mother gave birth to a man with great intelligence. Which is a gift from God to you and her.

can i say this.. how you act and treat others helps.. people who show respect and are not arrogant and are friendly and people persons do well when traveling abroad.. color is not an issue.. sadly to many make an issue out of it.. and that is where the problem begins...my wife has traveled extensively over in europe and elsewhere.. while she may have been fluent in some languages... many she was not.. most people in general try to help if you make an effort and are not arrogant... many americans do not realize they are being arrogant or disrespectful in eastern cultures by the fact they expect everyone to know and understand english while they make NO attempt at the language of the country they are in...funny thing is even inside the same countries just miles apart the languages can be totally different..Texans speak english one way and bostonians another way yet both are speaking english.. while both might not understand the other because of the accents or style and usage of english .. it is still considered english.. but a dialect.. same with spanish.. how many forms of that and dialects of that are there?? here in Texas it is worse..we get all the south american versions of english and spanish then we have spaniard spanish from spain..and then we have spanish from mexico city and then southern mexico spanish and here at the border with mexico we have another version of spanish and then in general in Texas we have a Tex Mex spanish...but if you show respect where ever you go... people will try to help you out... just be a nice human makes others want to be a nice human back... we all bleed red...unless you are a vulcan... be well and I agree... different people will produce different outcomes based off their actions and interactions and where they are... be well and stay safe... I know china is really safe... but we don't need you getting hit by an out of control scooter or bike..

You said: "Body movement." You should say: "Body language." You said: "You said: "You can have that quick learning." You should say: "By having a friend in person and having a conversation with them, you can learn the language faster, or more quickly, or more rapidly." It's important to use adverse like "quick and rapid" using the "ly" ending. It demonstrates that you have grasped the grammar of the language. This is the unfortunate problem with the majority of people who learn a foreign language. I have to admit that as a self-taught person you are doing quite well. What you said about your friends who take language classes in school is very true. They learn a bunch of words and definitions but not the language and they sound horrible.

Isn't that the whole point of learning a new language? That you want to sound as much like the native speaker as possible. I have heard a lot of people speaking foreign languages and they learn the words without learning the intonations and inflections of the language. They sound stupid.

You said: "On the corner." The correct way is: "The Chinese New Year is just around the corner." I don't correct you to be critical. But instead, to assist you with your English.

Hey Mike , have you come to know the Lord Jesus? Have you heard of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Getting to know Chinese is good but getting to know Jesus is better !!
